Mikal Hameeds Soundsystem-Kunst hatte ich schonmal vor ein paar Monaten, jetzt hat der Mann eine Tour durch New Yorker Galerien mit einem Event in Brooklyn beendet, Juxtapoz hat ein kleines Interview mit ihm, Snip:
Where are you from, where have you lived and where are you at now?I’m from punk rock, hip hop, early skateboarders, mixed with 80’s b-boyism. I grew up in Los Angeles, drinking Budwiser under age and singing punk rock in back yard pool parties. Vor einem halben Jahr ging ein Video durch so ziemlich alle Blogs, in dem sich Köpfe auf Turntables drehten: Neurosonics Audiomedical Laboratory Footage. Und als ob das damals nicht schon abgefahren genug gewesen wäre, hier jetzt der Nachfolger mit Beardymans Holo-Kopf auf Turntables. I break together.
Auf Creative Review schreiben sie, das ganze wäre tatsächlich live und ohne Post-Production, die Holo-Köpfe wären also wirklich echt, was ich bezweifle, ich kenne mich mit Holo-Technik aber auch gar nicht aus, aber egal: Beardymans Turntable-Holoköpfe sind so oder so over the top awesome.
Director Chris Cairns has teamed up with Beardyman and holographic projection experts Musion to create a live performance based on his Neurosonics Audiomedical Labs film, which features a number of disembodied rapping heads…
The film above shows live footage from an initial test performance of the holographic heads, with no post-production added.
Technics 1210er are no more… (UPDATE)
Das trifft mich als ollen Vinyl-DJ schon ein bisschen, auch wenn ich schon ewig nicht mehr aufgelegt habe und mir die Vorteile des digitalen Deejayings mehr als bewusst sind: Panasonic wird die Produktion der Technics 1210er-Turntables im Februar 2010 einstellen. It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.
The DJing community and the greater dance music scene mourns the loss of a clubbing staple today. No, Steve Aoki hasn’t hung up his record bag, but rather news has emerged that iconic turntable manufacturers Technics will be stopping production on their universally loved Technics 1200s and Technics 1210s.
In a statement re-posted on dance board Global Hardstyle, the company behind the production of the Technics turntables Panasonic announced that they would cease the manufacture of Tehcnics turntables in February next year, citing an increasing decline in sales as the motivation behind the line’s demise.

Schon wieder neues von den Kleptones, diesmal ein immerhin halbstündiges DJ-Set als Promo für einen Gig auf der Mashup-Central-Party, hier der Download-Link. Leider kein Tracklisting, aber die ersten paar Minuten mit irgendwelchen HipHop-Tracks, Creams „Sunshine of Your Love“ und Rage Against The Machine reichen mir schon.

A disc jockey with a difference is taking the music world by storm – using two 1930s wind-up gramophones.
Dave Guttridge, 48, is the UK’s only pre-vinyl disc jockey and uses two 70-year-old Picnic gramophones to pump out ‘old skool’ tunes – including old favourite The Teddy Bear’s Picnic – using Shellac 78 records.
Known as DJ78, he owns 3,500 of the fragile records and blasts out everything from 1920’s rag time, jazz and blues, to Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Cliff Richard and Elvis.

TurntablistPC is a telematic hybrid of a turntable (gramophone) and an old personal computer.
TurntablistPC is a server which third-party websites can access. A small file is hosted on the TurntablistPC. Subscribing websites place a short piece of code on their pages. This code sends information to the TurntablistPC. When somebody visits one of the subscribing websites, the TurntablistPC spins the record. Control is remote and hidden. But output – audio – is local only (through speakers in the TurntablistPC).
The location of the remote website controls the direction of the spin. If the website is located east of the TurntablistPC, it spins clockwise. If it is located west of the TurntablistPC, the spin is counterclockwise.
The distance to the visiting user determines the amount of spin. If you are near the TurntablistPC, you will only scratch the vinyl. If you are far away, it will play a whole section of the record.

Inhabitat hat ein großartiges Posting über Mikal Hameed, der weggeschmissene Möbel zu Soundsystems recycelt. Ich bin ja auch immer für mehr Subwoofer in Bürosesseln, um Businesskaspern mit so ein bisschen Bass den Arsch ins Gehirn zu blasen. Könnte helfen beim weniger Rumbusinesskaspern, aber ich schweife ab. Snip:
Why have you chosen to work with reclaimed materials?
Mikal: I am working with these materials out of necessity. It is easier for me to use found objects for what I build because at the end of the day I am creating pretty expensive stuff. By using found objects I am still able to execute my vision and keep it cost effective. And, I feel like I am helping out at the same time; people are throwing this stuff away, and I am retrieving it and making it into something else. A lot of people out there think that if the chair is missing a button, it is ruined, and get rid of it. That’s where I come in.

Uhren aus Platten gibt’s haufenweise, hier die passende Plattenspieleruhr dazu. Ist im Etsy-Shop leider ausverkauft, die haben da aber noch weitere Turntable-Uhren.
This clock was created using an old recycled Fischer turntable and a Doobie Bothers album, Minute by Minute, which is replaceable.

Sehr schönes Neuroscience-Deejayingdingens-Video mit Köpfen auf Turntables. Ich habe hier grade keinen Sound, kann also nicht sagen, ob da nicht irgendwelche furchtbare Musik ertönt oder noch schlimmer… Hip Hop läuft. Aber Köpfe auf Turntables, you know… da kann ich nur sehr schwer widerstehen.
Das Video nennt sich “Neurosonics Audiomedical Laboratory Footage”, was ja schonmal sehr schick ist. Dann steht da noch was von “Kingdom of the unreal but also a higher state of being, ultimately free of the limitations of the material world through the agency of science, technology, and imagination.” Yeah, whatever. Auf der Website zum Video gibt’s noch ein paar nette Production-Stills.

The Zombie Short Film Festival is the brain-child of Jim Taylor and Cory Laffin, two dudes who live in Toronto. We are hoping to hold it at the Revue Cinema, on Roncesvalles Avenue, in Toronto. Our target date is Friday, October 30th.
But there can’t be a festival without submissions! And that’s where, we hope, you will come in.

Carl Craigs Turntable-Geburtstagskuchen
Carl Craig nennt man auch den „Godfather of Techno“ und ist Pionier der elektronischen Musik in zweiter Generation (1. Generation: Juan Atkins, Derrick May und Kevin Saunderson), der wurde am 22. Vintage DJ-Decks
Hier die 1210er aus dem Jahr 1884, ein vintage DJ-Deck, damals zum nahtlosen Überblenden der Musik in Stummfilmvorstellungen benutzt. Und ich stelle mir grade Jeff Mills als vintage Schelllack-Wizard vor. Mit einem Zylinder auf dem Kopf und einem unfassbaren, spitzgezwirbelten Rauschebart. Und einem Monokel.

Custom turntables
About 5 years ago I decided to try my hand at building a custom turntable. Turntables and mechanical watch and clock movements fascinate me. I view them as functional pieces of kinetic art. I based my turntable design on the legendary Rega P3, and I created a new, custom acrylic plinth and a set of feet. I also devised a way to hide the motor, and I improved the motor mounting system. The plinth rests on small silicone dots, providing added isolation. The result was a very modern looking table. I called it the P3 Skeleton

Ich wusste schon immer, dass Plattenspieler ein Musikinstrument sind. Man muss nur wissen, wie sie gespielt werden müssen. Das bisher beste Stück Musik aus diesem Dings kam mir grade eben bei Indie Laundry unter. Birdy Nam Nam sind besser als Coldcuts “Beats and Pieces”, weil sie subtiler vorgehen und einen Track scratchen, der locker auf einer Platte von Portishead enthalten sein könne. Alles easy, this is deejaying.

Carl Cox ist ein Scheißdreck gegen Jeff Mills an drei Plattenspielern, bei beiden würde mich das Ergebnis aber mit so einem Exemplar wirklich mal interessieren… Ob man mit so einem Teil auch anständig scratchen kann?
