Copenhagen Suborbitals ist ein privates Projekt, das für grade mal 50.000 Euro einen Menschen mit einer Art Mini-Rakete ins All schießen will. Aber eigentlich geht’s mir grade nur um Feuer und Rauch und Raketen und Fauch und Slowmotion und Rocketporn und sowas.

„Space Tourists“ ist die neue Doku von Christian Frei, der 2001 mit seinem Film „War Photographer“ durchstartete (hier die offizielle Seite zu War Photographer, auf Google Video findet man ein paar Clips aus dem Film online, leider nicht die komplette Doku – aber ich wette, die ist irgendwo da draußen).
In „Space Tourists“ gehts um, naja, Space Touristen eben, die mit Raketen von Kasachstan aus zur ISS fliegen und dort ein paar Tage in Schwerelosigkeit leben, während die Kasachen unten dem Raketenmüll nachjagen. (Zum diesem Raketenmüll in Kasachstan hatte ich mal einen Foto-Essay verlinkt: Kasachstans Space-Müll.)
Der Film folgt Anousheh Ansari, die 2006 für 20 Millionen Dollar Urlaub auf der ISS machte (und dabei neben der amerikanischen Flagge die ihrer iranischen Heimat als Abzeichen trug, das aber nur so nebenbei). Sie selbst sagte dazu: „I hope to inspire everyone—especially young people, women, and young girls all over the world, and in Middle Eastern countries that do not provide women with the same opportunities as men—to not give up their dreams and to pursue them…It may seem impossible to them at times. But I believe they can realize their dreams if they keep it in their hearts, nurture it, and look for opportunities and make those opportunities happen.“ (Wikipedia)
In his most recent work, Christian Frei turns to an age-old dream of man: to leave our planet as a „normal person” and travel into outer space. For 20 million dollars, the American Anousheh Ansari was able to fulfil this childhood dream. This documentary follows her journey into space and shows everyday life as it is on the International Space Station. This terrific beauty is set in contrast to the crazy trips taken by Kazakh rocket debris collectors in their hunt for the coveted carrot-shaped rocket stages, which literally fall out of the sky and are collected by men with trucks the size of dinosaurs.
With breathtaking images, SPACE TOURISTS takes its audience into a fascinating world full of of wonder and surprise. Encounters with the least likely people imaginable. Places even stranger and more unknown than outer space itself.
Der Film läuft nächstes Jahr auf dem Sundance Filmfest und er darf meinetwegen kräftig gehyped werden, denn all das liest sich ziemlich fantastisch. /Film hat noch eine Galerie mit Stills aus dem Film, hier die offizielle Website zum Film.
In 20 Jahren wird ein Asteroid ziemlich nahe an der Erde vorbeifliegen. Wenn er dabei einen bestimmten Korridor passiert, wird er seinen Orbit ein wenig ändern und sieben Jahre später mit der Erde kollidieren. Die Chancen dazu stehen zwar nur 1 zu 48.000, aber vielleicht könnte trotzdem schonmal jemand vorsorglich Bruce Willis anrufen? Nur für den Fall.
Und natürlich, falls der unwahrscheinliche Fall eintritt, dann findet die Apokalypse an einem, Achtung!, Freitag den 13. statt. War ja klar. Oben nochmal die Asteroiden-Apocalypse mit Benny Hill-Soundtrack, Snip von Deepastronomy.com:
Apophis is an asteroid with an slightly offset orbit to that of Earth’s. Discovered in June 2004, astronomers have determined that it will make a very close flyby on April 13th, 2029, where it will pass to within 5 Earth diameters of us. The exact path the asteroid follows on its flyby in 2029 will determine whether it smashes into the Earth seven years later.
So, after astronomers had determined that the April 2029 encounter wasn’t going to impact the Earth, they ran some simulations and found that the orbit of the asteroid will bend about 28 degrees, altering its course.
The flyby will make the orbit a bit bigger and Apophis will travel a bit slower. How much the orbit changes depends on how close it gets to us. If it flies through a specific 610-meter wide region of space as it goes past us in 2029, then Apophis’ and the Earth will be in the exact same spot 7 years later on Friday April 13th, 2036.

Sehr schönes Video vom American Museum of Natural History, das sowas wie Powers of Ten – ein Video-Klassiker (hatte ich hier), in dem aus einem normalen Bild eines Picknicks erst um den Faktor 10n herausgezoomt und schließlich bis bis zur Molekularebene hineingezoomt wird –, nur eben mit tatsächlichen Daten des Universums.
Sehr schön, nehme ich zumindest an, ich kann’s mir nämlich nicht wirklich anschauen, weil mein USB-Stick-Internet grade ätzend langsam läuft und Alice es tatsächlich seit grandiosen zwei Monaten nicht schafft, meinen Anschluß umzuziehen, woraufhin ich eben ziemlich angepisst einer Dame von denen erklärte, wenn das Ding nicht innerhalb einer Woche angeknipst ist, würde ich den Vertrag wegen Nichterfüllung kündigen und auf Rückzahlung zweier Monatsbeiträge pochen würde, notfalls auch mit Anwalt. Aber dem Universum ist sowas ja eher egal, Snip vom Posting auf der Website des Museums:

Manchmal hasse ich es ja, dass ich hier immer viel und oft Zeugs raushaue, weil ich deshalb nämlich immer öfter auf Zeugs stoße, das ich hier schon hatte. Normalerweise bringe ich sowas dann nicht. Und weil Ausnahmen die Regel bestätigten, mache ich da mal ‘ne Ausnahme für diese Space-Fotoserie von Vincent Fournier.
Weil der nämlich nur eine doofe Flash-Website hat und die Serie ziemlich fantastisch ist, scheiße ich einfach mal auf das Schonmalgehabthaben und sage einfach: „Wow! Vincent Fournier schießt fantastische Bilder von Astronauten vor seltsamen Tapeten, Space-Tech und Retro-Weiltraumzeugs.“
Die japanische Brauerei Sapporo verkauft Sixpacks from space: Bier, das mit Gerste gebraut wurde, die in der vierten Generation von Gerstesamen stammt, die in der Internationalen Raumstation aufgezogen wurde. Ein Space-Sixer kostet nur $110 (der Gewinn aus dem Verkauf geht an die Okayama University) und kann irgendwie auf dieser japanischen Website bestellt werden. Die Dinger sind auf 250 Sixpacks limitiert.
Und wenn das Bier genauso metallisch schmeckt, wie der Weltraum (ich hatte da mal ein Posting, bin grade zu faul zum Raussuchen, aber der war über den Geschmack des Alls: Astronauten sagen, Space hatte einen „metallischen“ Geschmack… kein Scheiß!), dann habe ich irgendwie nicht so viel Interesse. Aber die Idee ist natürlich super. Als nächstes dann bitte Joints aus Space-Marijuana. Das wäre ein Knaller!

Hier der dritte Track vom Symphony of Science, diesmal wieder mit Carl Sagan und Stephen Hawking, aber auch mit Richard Dawkins und Michio Kaku. Die 7″ ihres ersten Tracks ist am Wochenende angekommen (bei den anderen NC-Bestellern auch, wie ich in den Comments lesen konnte), leider auch keine goldene. Egal, autotuned Cosmology rocks! Und vielleicht gibt’s am Ende sogar ein Album voller Space-Tunes mit Sagan, Hawking und Dawkins-Samples. Hach!

Vor ein paar Wochen lud John Boswell seinen Remix von Carl Sagans „Cosmos“ auf Youtube hoch, eine autotuned Version von dessen Astronomie-Show aus den 70ern inklusive ebenfalls autogetunter Zitate von Stephen Hawking. (Das Video und dessen Nachfolger hatte ich hier und hier.)
Jetzt hat Jack Whites Label Third Man Records den ursprünglichen Track gesignt und der kommt auf Vinyl und als superlimitierte 7″, die auf der B-Seite eine Gravur der goldenen Platte, die mit der Voyager Sonde 1977 ins Weltall geschossen wurde. Und das alles zusammen ist absolut Jesus Christ in a chicken basket, I’m standing on the fucking Moon!
The release is timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Sagan’s birth. Also happening that day is a reception in United States’ Congress with speeches by senators, NASA officials and assorted scientists, all hosted by the Planetary Society, which was co-founded by Sagan.
Third Man Records, in conjunction with United Record Pressing, fabricated a special “Cosmos Colored Vinyl” of which 150 copies will be available…50 randomly inserted into mail orders for “A Glorious Dawn” and the remainder to be made available at the Third Man Records Nashville store front at noon on November 9th.
The one-sided single features a very special etching on the flipside. Reproduced from the original artwork, the etching copies the etching included with the Voyager Golden Record, set off into space in 1977 as the most elaborate message-in-a-bottle idea ever imagined.

Ich weiß nicht, was an dieser Meldung dran ist, aber nachdem Aldi seit gut zehn Jahren Rechner verkauft, danach irgenwelche Discounter Deals mit der Bahn haben, hat wohl jetzt Penny einen Deal für Weltraum-Tourismus. Wobei das alles für mich mehr als fadenscheinig klingt. Aber ich mag die Idee, ein Wochenende im Erd-Orbit im Supermarkt kaufen zu können. Snip:

The promise: After five days training, the purchaser, and perhaps four others, could be taken to a “spaceport” in Oklahoma to board the “Rocketplane XP” and fly to a height of 12,000 meters (40,000 feet) before being “catapulted into the air” by booster rockets to a height of 105,000 meters. The engines would then be cut and seatbelts “loosened by a computer” to allow those on board to savour weightlessness for five or 10 minutes.

Hier der superinteressante TED-Talk von Stuntman Steve Truglia, der ein bisschen über die Geschichte der Stunts erzählt, dann ein wenig über Stunt-Technologie und schließlich bei seinem neuesten Projekt landet, dem Space Jump, mit dem er den 1960 aufgestellten Rekord von Joseph Kittinger (Wikipedia) einstellen will, der damals aus einer Höhe von 31 Kilometern in die Wolken sprang.
Die Filmaufnahmen davon hatten die Boards of Canada in ihrem Video zu „Dayvan Cowboy“ verwursteten, hier das Video, hatte ich hier schonmal irgendwann…
Der japanische Satellit Kaguya hat den Mond abfotografiert und daraus Topografie-Daten erstellt, mit denen jetzt ein Tool programmiert wurde, das aus diesen Daten lustige Topo-Musik macht. Wortwörtliche Mondmusik, quasi. Snip von der About-Seite:

Lunar orbiting satellite Kaguya (SELENE) was launched from Tanegashima Space Center on September 14, 2007 at 10:31am. Kaguya is currently orbiting the moon, taking observations of the lunar surface with 14 different sensors. moonbell uses data from one of those sensors, a laser altimeter, or LALT, transforming the altitude data into musical intervals.
moonbell has two playback modes, [Orbit Play] and [Free Scratch].

Wolfgang Krell hat nicht viele Spaceships mit Graffiti gemalt. Ist mir aber wurscht, ich liebe diese Idee und würde auch gerne mal ein Spaceshuttle ansprühen. First we took the subway, then we take outer Space! Yeah!
„The sky is not the limit“ oder „Graffiti-Writer bombt Raumschiffe im Orbit!“ – Seitdem ich mit Graffiti zu tun habe, denkt jeder Graffiti-Writer, was er als nächstes bemalen kann. Wichtig ist dabei, dass es nicht schon Jemand vor ihm getan hat! Es gab wohl Leute die einen Panzer oder ein Raumschiff in Form ihrer Buchstaben gemalt haben, aber mir ist keiner bekannt der je ein Raumschiff im All bemalt hat!
Hier ein schöner Foto-Essay über das Alltagsleben in Kasachstan mit dem Müll der russischen Raumfahrt, deren Trägerraketen regelmäßig dort irgendwo aufs Land krachen, nachdem sie ihren Treibstoff verbraucht haben. Die Russen schießen seit April ihre Satelliten von Pletsnesk ins All, Borat hat aber trotzdem noch keine Ruhe, die kasachische Abschußrampe wird weiterhin genutzt.
(Und ich liebe dieses Bild da oben, das hat etwas absolut traumhaftes, Menschen die auf Raumfahrt-Müll rumklettern, während irgendwas runterregnet… könnte aus einem Tim Burton Space-Film stammen.)
On April 16, Russia announced that it would henceforth launch military satellites at the Pletsnesk cosmodrome in northern Russia, ending the practice of launching satellites from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This shift will deprive Kazakh children of the chance to watch some satellites take off, though Baikonur will remain the launchpad for commercial “birds” and manned missions. As these photos show, it will also spare Kazakhs the fallout, literal and otherwise, that occurs in a launch’s wake.
All space-bound rockets consist largely of fuel tanks and booster stages that fall back to earth when spent, never reaching orbit. In landlocked Baikonur, Russia’s primary launching complex in Kazakhstan, these spaceships crash to earth. This photo essay visits the areas where the supporting rockets land, and shows the people living under the flight paths who contend with flaming spaceship wrecks several times each month.

Jason Kottke hat eine Website gebaut, auf der man ganz oldschool die Mondlandung wie vor vierzig Jahren anschauen kann. Die Uhrzeiten müsst ihr selber umrechnen. (Na gut: Wenn bei uns Neil Armstrong am 21. Juli 1969 um 3.56 Uhr MEZ als erster Mensch den Mond betrat und die Mondlandung bei denen um 16:10 Uhr losging, dann müsste das ganze um ungefähr 21 Uhr starten.)
Inspired by the ApolloPlus40 Twitter account and We Choose the Moon, both of which are tracking the Apollo 11 mission as it happened 40 years ago, I’ve built a page where you can watch the CBS News coverage of Walter Cronkite reporting on the Moon landing and the first moon walk, 40 years to the second after it originally happened.

When Apollo Mission Astronaut Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, he not only gave his famous “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” statement but followed it by several remarks, usual com traffic between him, the other astronauts and Mission Control. Just before he re-entered the lander, however, he made the enigmatic remark “Good luck, Mr. Gorsky.”
Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs. Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what the “Good luck, Mr. Gorsky” statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled.
On July 5, 1995 (in Tampa Bay, FL) while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26-year-old question to Armstrong. This time he finally responded. Mr. Gorsky had finally died and so Neil Armstrong felt he could answer the question.
When he was a kid, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit a fly ball which landed in the front of his neighbor’s bedroom windows. His neighbors were Mr. & Mrs. Gorsky.
As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky, “Oral sex! You want oral sex?! You’ll get oral sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!”

An amazing new photograph showing Neil Armstrong’s face through his space suit visor has come to light on the 40th anniversary of the first manned Moon landing.
The image was shot by the movie camera mounted on the lunar lander famously called ‘Eagle’, but the frame lasts for only a fleeting moment.
It shows Armstrong’s face in clear view as he walks across the lunar surface.

Der Guardian hat die spannende Story über die Paranoia und Einsamkeit von Michael Collins, dem Astronauten, der im Columbia-Spaceship zurückblieb und einmal den Mond umkreiste, während Neil Armstrong und Buzz Aldrin mit dem Eagle auf dem Mond landeten.
“My secret terror for the last six months has been leaving them on the Moon and returning to Earth alone; now I am within minutes of finding out the truth of the matter,” he wrote. “If they fail to rise from the surface, or crash back into it, I am not going to commit suicide; I am coming home, forthwith, but I will be a marked man for life and I know it.” [...]
Apollo 11 consisted of a spindly lunar lander, Eagle, and an orbiting mothership, Columbia, that were both blasted into space on a giant Saturn V rocket on 16 July 1969. For three days, Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins cruised towards the Moon inside Columbia and spent their time gazing “out the window at the Earth getting smaller and smaller and checking the spacecraft”, according to Aldrin.
Then, on 20 July, Armstrong and Aldrin crawled into Eagle and flew it down to the Moon’s surface. “Keep talking to me, guys,” radioed an initially panicky Collins as the pair drifted away from his ship.
Minutes later, Columbia swept behind the Moon and Collins became Earth’s most distant solo traveller, separated from the rest of humanity by 250,000 miles of space and by the bulk of the Moon, which blocked all radio transmissions to and from mission control. He was out of sight and out of contact with his home planet.
“I am now truly alone and absolutely alone from any known life. I am it,” he wrote in his capsule.

The Saturn V rocket was something the size of a skyscraper could survive being thrown into orbit, undamaged. 40 years after the Saturn V powered trip to the moon, nothing as powerful exists today.
Years ago Airfix made a model of a Saturn V which I lusted after as a kid and Revell have now re-released their original 1:96 version and a 1:144 one which is the same size as the old Airfix. We tracked down the best Saturn V models that you can buy or have been built, culminating in auto repair man, Steve Eves’ completely insane home built 40 foot high, 1600 pound monster which he actually launched, in April.

That future, as always, is uncertain, but as the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing arrives on July 20, the past remains familiar. Nine Apollo missions were launched moonward, and six of them landed. The cultural memories of these missions remain penny-bright — and the aging men who flew the ships retain a status that goes beyond iconic. Baseball players are icons; movie stars are icons. But those kinds of folks, we breed as we need. The lunar fraternity stopped taking members in 1972, when there were only 24 of them — and six have since died. History has produced far more American Presidents than it has lunar astronauts.
