The Berlin Wall was the physical embodiment of the ‘Iron Curtain’ that divided the Soviet world from the West. Once it fell the Soviet Empire also began to crumble. At its heart had been a military system which extended throughout the Soviet bloc and exerted huge control and influence. There were military bases in every country.

Eric Lusito has travelled from East Germany to Mongolia and from Poland to Kazakhstan in search of these former Soviet military bases.

Tierschutzaktivisten haben halbnackt auf den Straßen von St. Petersburg gegen ein neues Jagdgesetz protestiert, indem sie sich mit einer Menge Kunstblut auf dem Asphalt abschlachten ließen. Metaphorisch, natürlich. Now, these are some Suicide Girls.

Downtown St.-Petersburg. A man dressed in a camouflage hunter uniform fusilladed half-naked people wearing animal masks. People were moaning and whining and begging to save them, but the hunter had no sympathy for dying creatures, and after slaughtering each of the “animals” and feeling that our duty has been done, he made his getaway in a rush. That performance was organized by activists from Alliance for Animal Rights, who were speaking and acting out against the new hunting law.

Hier ein schöner Foto-Essay über das Alltagsleben in Kasachstan mit dem Müll der russischen Raumfahrt, deren Trägerraketen regelmäßig dort irgendwo aufs Land krachen, nachdem sie ihren Treibstoff verbraucht haben. Die Russen schießen seit April ihre Satelliten von Pletsnesk ins All, Borat hat aber trotzdem noch keine Ruhe, die kasachische Abschußrampe wird weiterhin genutzt.

(Und ich liebe dieses Bild da oben, das hat etwas absolut traumhaftes, Menschen die auf Raumfahrt-Müll rumklettern, während irgendwas runterregnet… könnte aus einem Tim Burton Space-Film stammen.)

On April 16, Russia announced that it would henceforth launch military satellites at the Pletsnesk cosmodrome in northern Russia, ending the practice of launching satellites from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This shift will deprive Kazakh children of the chance to watch some satellites take off, though Baikonur will remain the launchpad for commercial “birds” and manned missions. As these photos show, it will also spare Kazakhs the fallout, literal and otherwise, that occurs in a launch’s wake.

All space-bound rockets consist largely of fuel tanks and booster stages that fall back to earth when spent, never reaching orbit. In landlocked Baikonur, Russia’s primary launching complex in Kazakhstan, these spaceships crash to earth. This photo essay visits the areas where the supporting rockets land, and shows the people living under the flight paths who contend with flaming spaceship wrecks several times each month.

Während Blu die Finanzkrise mit einem Haifisch aus Geldscheinen bebildert und Douglas Rushkoff nicht ganz zu Unrecht fordert, man möge doch bitte bitte die angeschlagene Wirtschaft in Ruhe sterben lassen, weil die Finanzkrise eh nur den Bullshitpart beträfe, machen es die Russen mal wieder ganz anders. Dort bekämpft eine Bank die fiese Finanzkrise mit Stripperinnen.

What are they for in the monetary institution one can ask? The answer is publicity. Some credit structures can hit any measures in order to avoid the bankrupcy, so the such publicity that can giv strippers is also worth of trying, so the idea appeared to hire strippers to dance in the windows to attract new customers to the bank and gain some free media coverage, both national and international.

It’s new fun in some Russian cities, to jump from the bridge with the rope in a big group, when there is no water under the bridge but raw firm ice, also they use to jump at that same moment when the train is going thru the bridge – just imagine what the machinist could think when he sees a bunch of people standing on the rails just before the moving train, so he probably starts slowing down and then all those people jump out of the bridge…

Doku: Cosmic Station – Die letzten armenischen Weltraumforscher

Hab gestern diese doku über die letzten drei extraterrestrischen strahlen-/alien-/gottesbeweisforscher armeniens gesehen und es hat mich umgeblasen! die riesege sowjet-station ist eine düstere, abgefuckte bauruine auf einem kargen berg. alles steht voll mit gammliger uralttechnik, überall hängen kabelsalate rum, dreckige hallen stehen mit rostigen kondensatoren voll …

Auf dem areal hätte gut ein alien film gedreht werden können und die hand voll leute die dort scheinbar sinnlos seit jahrzehnten daten über weltraumstrahlung sammeln verlieren sich auf der riesenanlage in ziemlich einsamer melancholie.

der film ist surreal, schön und hat einen abgefahrenen astro-vintage-sowjet-nerd-charme!

Ich hab mir die 25minütige Dokumentation eben angesehen und jedes Wort ist wahr. Der Film ist voller Melancholie, verrottendem Retrotech-Zeug und einsamen Wissenschaftler, die Daten über den Weltraum sammeln. Wow! Die Doku ist noch auf Artes Website online zu sehen.

Lost in Space

There are those who believe that somewhere in the vast blackness of space, about nine billion miles from the Sun, the first human is about to cross the boundary of our Solar System into interstellar space. His body, perfectly preserved, is frozen at –270 degrees C (–454ºF); his tiny capsule has been silently sailing away from the Earth at 18,000 mph (29,000km/h) for the last 45 years. He is the original lost cosmonaut, whose rocket went up and, instead of coming back down, just kept on going.

It is the ultimate in Cold War legends: that at the dawn of the Space Age, in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, the Soviet Union had two space programmes, one a public programme, the other a ‘black’ one, in which far more daring and sometimes downright suicidal missions were attempted. It was assumed that Russia’s Black Ops, if they existed at all, would remain secret forever.

The brains of dead Russian geniuses

What makes a man a genius? Russian neuroscientists were pondering this exactly this question in the early 1900s and did exactly what seemed sensible at the time – they collected and dissected the brains of some of the greatest cultural figures in a huge collection called ‘The Pantheon of Brains’.

It’s a fascinating story told in a recent article published in the medical journal Brain. Amazingly, the last brain was only added in 1989.

Let’s Collect Polish Star Wars Memorabilia!

In the US and other countries, where the healthy rules of free market prevailed, fans were granted almost unlimited access to such collectibles and toys. However, the situation behind the Iron Curtain remained largely unknown. But it wasn’t as bad as it could seem.
Countries like Poland or Hungary found themselves under Soviet influence, where every interest in the “decadent art of the bourgeois West” was met with severe hostility and the free press was non-existent. However, even here people experienced a huge explosion of interest in the movie and the phenomena connected with it. Unfortunately, not all of these phenomena arrived in Poland unchanged: we were, among other things, deprived of the pleasure of collecting the licensed items.

Evgeny Chibilev recently sent us a series of photographs that he took in the “slyudo” mines (muscovite: potassium mica), dated from the times of Stalin’s Gulags and abandoned since 1961. (it’s located near the city of Kyshtym, Chelyabinsk region)

Ich meinte ja neulich noch, dass die Frage nach der weißen Weihnacht wohl dank Klimawandel und so hierzulande sowieso bald aussterben wird. In Russland hat man solche Probleme jedenfalls nicht.
