Hier das Musikvideo zum anstehenden Biopic der Band The Runaways (Joan Jett, anyone?) mit einer sehr erwachsen gewordenen Dakota Fanning in Strapsen und Korsett. Wenn das die amerikanische Rechte mitkriegt, is’ wieder mal Schicht im Schacht, doh. Die Trailer und ein sehr schickes Poster hatten wir schon bei den Filmfreunden gebloggt.
Ich wusste, dass es Kurt Cobain-Actionfiguren gibt und auch, dass es eine von Jim Morrisson gibt. Ich wusste aber nicht, dass es anscheinend ein ganzes Dead Rockstar Toy-Subgenre gibt. Oben Joey Ramone, Fanboy hat ein Posting mit Sid Vicious, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix und mehr.
Recently I’ve started to realize that there is an entire genre of action figures that are based on dead rock-and-roll stars: My theory is that these collectables represents the mourning of our lost youth. As most of these rock stars die in their youth, we’ve never known them to grow old — and by extension this allows us to do the same.

Wireds Raw File hat ein Preview auf Matthew Niederhausers Fotoband Sound Kapital, das den wachsenden Rock-Underground in China zeigt. Sehr schöne Fotos vom Punk in Bejing und ich bin sehr gespannt, ob die Mittelfinger-Attitüde irgendwann auch mal politische Folgen haben wird.
Tight pants, cool haircuts and rock music. They’re commonplace, even cliché, in the United States, but they’re now the icons of a complex transformation in China.
The country’s ever-growing consumer culture almost requires an increased sense of individuality and its own counterculture. And considering the shape and energy of its emerging underground music scene, it’s hard not to project a parallel mindset onto China similar to that of the United States in the 1960s and ’70s.
But photographer Matthew Niederhauser, whose new book Sound Kapital documents the newly formed underground Beijing rock scene, says such projection is a mistake.
“Too often,” says Niederhauser, “I see journalists who parachute into Beijing for a few days seeking out performers who will feed them controversial quotes.” The motivations of these bands, he says, are not so easily classified. “The music scene is not about revolution right now, but about embracing an alternative, creative and open lifestyle in Beijing — something that China desperately needs.”

Kid Koalas neuestes Projekt „The Slew“ hat ein Rock-Scratch-Turntablism-Album am Start und das gibt’s für lau auf seiner Website. Snip aus ‘nem Interview mit Wired:
Canadian turntablist Kid Koala is bringing the noise with his latest project, a stellar rock-hop collaboration called The Slew that effectively weds DJ skills and studio wizardry with raw rock ‘n’ roll power.
“I think rock kids who hate turntables may listen to The Slew and get over their preconceptions pretty quickly,” said Kid Koala, aka Eric San, in an e-mail interview with Wired.com.
San, 35, collaborated with Dylan Frombach (aka Dynomite D) to create Slew’s spine-shaking debut, 100%, which is available free from San’s official website.
During production of 100%, San and Frombach made a point of turning up the tech by any means necessary. The result was studio and vinyl manipulation and amplification, enhanced by mixing from Beastie Boys’ producer Mario Caldato Jr., that is capable of turning heads and damaging ears.
“When we started this album four-and-a-half years ago,” said San, “we would constantly ask ourselves, ‘What would it sound like if The Bomb Squad or The Dust Brothers had produced a Black Sabbath record?’”
Then they reverse-engineered classic rock ‘n’ roll recordings and transferred their findings to their instruments of choice.

Then I found out that a thick layer of cement shields the radio from actually receiving radio waves. With my “Now it doesn’t work anyway” philosophy, I took a big hammer and created this Flintstones look, and the radio works!

Zander Blom aus Südafrika hat 17 Installationen für die Ausstellung „The Travels of Bad“ geschaffen. Dazu gehören außerdem ein Roman und ein Soundtrack aus 17 „rock-opera type symphonic drone thrash metal rock“-Songs. Whooohoo! Everything gets better with Flying Vs.
The Travels of bad is essentially a satire that looks critically at the influence that exotic cultures and their artefacts have had on the avant-garde system of European visual art from the end of the 19th century onwards.
The critique comes in the shape of mini-novella that is illustrated by a series of photographic works and accompanied by a pseudo rock-opera type symphonic drone thrash metal rock album.

Ich bin ja generell sehr an Blumen und Vasen interessiert. Die Lieblichkeit von Blumendüften in der Wohnung ist mir äußerst wichtig und auch, dass die floralen Dingsbums in schickem Porzelan die Bleibe zieren hat bei mir oberste Priorität.
Okay, Scherz beiseite: Blumen sind für mich einmal im Jahr Thema (Muttertag) und eine Vase habe ich, glaube ich, noch nie in der Hand gehabt. Grade deshalb finde ich diese klassischen Vasen mit Rawk totally awesome!

Bislang hatte es Danny Choo eher mit Dance, als mit Rock. Diesmal allerdings hat er sich aber eine Gitarre umgehängt und rockt als Stormtrooper nachts auf Tokyos Straßen. Nur der Song ist völlig grausam und ich frage mich, warum er nicht Iron Maidens „The Trooper“ druntergelegt hat, das wäre wirklich authentisch gewesen. Sofern man einen Mann mit einer Gitarre in einem Strumtruppen-Kostüm überhaupt als authentisch bezeichnen kann.
Der Chopshop hat nach dem Moviecars-Shirt, Internet-Meme-Shirt, Celebrity-Robot-Shirt und dem Alien-Shirt diesmal ein Shirt mit den größten Rockstars zwischen 1965 und 1975 aufgelegt. Okay: Hendrix ist ganz links, David Bowie ist der zweite von unten, ganz links, Jethro Tull ist links, zweiter von oben, Angus Young von AC/DC ist ganz rechts, zwei weiter Links ist Freddy Mercury, die Fab Four müssten auch dabei sein, John Lennon ist rechts, der mit dem Victory-Zeichen, für die anderen drei bin ich jetzt zu faul. Und wer ist nochmal der mit dem Mikrofon-Schwinger ganz oben? Led Zeppelins Robert Plant?
Hatten wir ja neulich erst: die Star Wars-Rockband. Jetzt „neu“ aus dem Magazin Star Wars Insider von 1999: die Star Wars-HipHopper. Episode IV bis VI rockt also, während Episode I bis III rappt, mit Jar Jar Binks am Mikro. This makes sense in so many, many ways – in a galaxy far, far away.

Ich denke, ich werde mich mal etwas eingehender mit Math Rock beschäftigen. Erst blasen mich im July die Battles mit ihrem Album „Mirrored“ gegen die Wand, jetzt machen Future of the Left dasselbe mit „Curses“. Fantastisches Album und wenn ich mir diesen Bericht (Hey! Die Blogrocking Beats leben noch!) über ein Konzert der Battles durchlese, muss das Konzept Math Rock live eine einzige Wucht sein. Hat jemand Tipps? Ich find’s… gewöhnungsbedürftig, mich bei Wikipedia über Musik zu informieren.

1991 – The Year Punk Broke ist eine kleine, feine Doku-Perle von Regisseur Dave Markey, der vor allem mit seinen Videos für Sonic Youth bekannt wurde. Der Film kreist um die Bands Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., die Ramones und die Babes in Toyland. Sie alle waren im Sommer 1991 in Europa auf Tour, kurz bevor im September die große Grungehysterie ausbrach. Die Anspannung und Überforderung Kurt Cobains ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits greifbar und macht den Film etwas beklemmend.

Eigentlich m??sste man jedes einzelne Video der Kindersendung Pancake Mountain, die Herr Shhhhh ausgegraben hat und ganz treffend als ??die Sesamstra??e f??r kleine Nachwuchs-Rocker??? bezeichnet, hier einbinden. Ich beschr?nke mich aber mal lieber auf die Whites Stripes, Lilly Allen und Franz Ferdinand mit Babys und sage: hier gibt es noch die Flaming Lips, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire und andere… Damit ist der rebellische Nachwuchs garantiert konformresistent.
