Some memories of the good ole days. Used to be on the Pepsi skateboard team back in the 70s on the East Coast. We would put on shows at verious locations in New England and abouts..We went to New York a few times for a few parades including the Macys day parade where we skated with Tony Alva during his hayday.

Cassette tapes, typewriters, vinyl records, NES consoles. The reclaiming of forgotten technology is every hipster’s siren song.
Mopeds are no different, and the vintage bikes are forming better meatspace communities than most iPhone apps.
Almost every major city in the U.S. boasts at least one moped gang, and the names straddle being badass and ironic: Creatures of the Loin (San Francisco), Puddle Cutters (Portland, Oregon), the Tom Cruisers (Tempe, Arizona), Latebirds (Los Angeles), Landsquids (Sacramento, California), Decepticons (Kalamazoo, Michican), Hells Satans (Richmond, Virginia) and more.
The Oprhans are Brooklyn’s fearsome two-stroke contigent (pictured above), and they’re obsessed with the abandoned pedal-start bikes.
Mopeds reached the height of their popularity in the late 1970s during the oil crisis. Now they litter backyards and clutter garages with their rusted frames and rotted tires. A growing subculture, to which the Orphans belong, is eager to breathe life back into these motorized gems and turn them loose in the streets.

Black Panther Cover von 1969–71
Eine Sammlung mit Covern des Black Panthers, des Magazins zur Black Power-Bewegung. Die Cover strahlen eine längst vergangene Retro-Revolutions-Attitüde aus und sind mal was anderes, als die Che Guevera-Poster, die heute bei Hinz und Kunz im Wohnzimmer hängen.
Die Black Panther kenne ich ja nur von den Bildern von Tommie Smith und John Carlos, Erst- und Drittplatzierte des 200 Meter-Laufs der olympischen Spiele (!) 1968, als die auf dem Siegertreppchen eine Geste der Solidarität mit der Black Panther Party zeigten, nur um danach die Medallien aberkannt zu bekommen. Und natürlich aus Filmen.
Die Black Panther Party (ursprünglich Black Panther Party for Self-Defense) war eine afro-amerikanische Bürgerrechts- und Selbstschutzbewegung in den USA. Ihre Hauptaktivität hatte die im Oktober 1966 von Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, und Richard Aoki gegründete Organisation in den 60ern und 70ern. Die Partei wurde gegründet, um im Interesse Afro-Amerikanischer Gerechtigkeit bewaffneten Widerstand gegen die damalige gesellschaftliche Unterdrückung zu leisten, aber die Ziele und Philosophie der Partei änderten sich mit der Zeit radikal. Während die Anführer ihre Rhetorik auf revolutionären Klassenkampf stützten und viele Ideen aus den Werken von Marx, Lenin und Mao übernahmen, zog der nationalistische Ruf der Partei widersprüchliche Personen an, sodass die Ausrichtung der Organisation nie einheitlich war und es oft zu deutlichen Differenzen zwischen Basis und Führung kam. Martha Cooper über Oldschool-Graffiti und Breakdance
Philipp drüben bei Nomnomnom meint: „Fotografin Martha Cooper erzählt, wie möglicherweise sie dafür verantwortlich ist, dass Graffiti, auf jeden Fall aber Breakdance, im Mainstream angekommen ist.“
Ich kenne die Bilder von Martha Cooper aus dem Buch „Subway Art“, dass mir die Polizisten bei einer Hausdurchsuchung abgenommen haben zusammen mit zwei Rucksäcken voller Sprühdosen. Ich hab’s mir dann später nochmal nachgekauft. Das hier ist jedenfalls ein ganz wunderbares Video mit extrem viel Bildmaterial aus Zeiten, als HipHop noch nicht BlingBling, sondern Breakdance, Writing, DJing und von mir aus eben auch Rap war.
Kung Fu Porn
The Vixens of Kung Fu (TVOKF) ist ein Hardcore-Streifen von 1977. Ein echter Porno, kein normaler B-Film, bei dem nachträglich Hardcore-Szenen eingefügt worden wären, wie das zu dieser Zeit häufig gemacht wurde. Erwähnenswerte Namen im Cast sind Bree Anthony und Bobby Astyr. Regie führte ein gewisser Lin Cho Chiang, der sich zwei Jahre zuvor einen Namen als Produzent des auch heute noch geschätzten Oriental Blue machte. Nach diesen beiden Filmen war allerdings Schicht im Schacht und Chiang verschwand in den dunklen Seitenstraßen der Porno-Industrie.
TVOKF ist ein Revenge-Movie ohne Revenge, dafür mit Hardcore-Einlagen, könnte man sagen. Der Anfang erinnert an typische Video-Nasties wie The last House on the Left und I spit on your Grave. Dieser Eindruck verflüchtigt sich allerdings bald. Schwachsinnige Handlung, hölzerne Dialoge und ein uneingeschränkt dilettantischer Schnitt sorgen für Erheiterung.

The £35 ASOS Cassette Face watch is a modern quartz timepiece that evokes the look of a cassette tape — one ‘reel’ displays the hour, the other shows minutes. Die Retro-Foto-Sets von Superbomba sind fantastisch, zeigen Retro-Mutanten und Retro-Mädchen und Schnappschüsse aus den Sechzigern und Siebzigern. Und im Gegensatz zu den neuen StarWars-Episoden erfahren wir hier endlich, wie Chewie und Han als Teenager aussahen.

Paleo-laptop reviewed, 1983
Ultimate Compatibility When a company advertises a computer as being “IBM PC-compatible,” the best way to test its claim is to try to load an IBM release of PC-DOS, CP/M-86, or the UCSD p-system. I didn’t have the p-system, but I did have both PC-DOS and CP/M-86 and was able to try both of them on a prototype of the Compaq computer. The systems loaded and executed perfectly, with the exception of the BASIC on PC-DOS, which wouldn’t execute because the Compaq doesn’t have ROM BASIC. The BASICA provided on disk and all of the IBM PC sample BASIC programs found on the PC-DOS disk ran without incident. I also tried some CP/M-86 assembler-level software that I had written, and it worked without a hitch as well. I spent about an hour loading and running a number of game programs and some professional packages such as Wordstar and Supercalc. With one exception, they all worked correctly. The one that didn’t was a game program that ran perfectly but died when I tried to terminate the game. One of the programmers told me that the problem was probably a result of not initializing the hardware correctly when the system was powered up. The company assured me that the problem would be solved before any machines were shipped.

Nachdem ich jetzt zum x-ten Mal auf diese eher dürftige Galerie bei Wired gestoßen bin, will ich nochmal auf diese drei Sammlungen mit wunderbaren Fotos von Stewardessen aus den 50ern, 60ern und 70ern hinweisen. Weil, da haben die ihre 11 mageren Bildchen nämlich auch her (selbstverständlich, ohne Dark Roasted Blend zu verlinken). Dort gibt es dann aber nochmal 3000 Fotos mehr. Und überhaupt: Retrosexy.

The American Look, 1958
If you can make it through the glacially paced intro and can put up with the typically clunky, often laughable and jingoistic fifties-style narration, this 1958 film from Chevrolet, The American Look is worth viewing. Chock full of futuristic telephones, toasters, blenders, office machines, architecture and more, it’s a mid-century design lover’s dream. The film is visually striking and elegant, and presented in widescreen format.
The Star Wars Spoiler that never was + WTF-Merchandising
Ich bin grade völlig fasziniert von diesen (schlampigen) Scans eines Magazins vom November 1980, das einen Artikel über „The Empire strikes back“-Spoiler von 1979 enthält. Boba Fett führt die Sturmtruppen an, Chewbacca wird ausgeknockt und das Imperium stürmt eine Rebellen-Basis… auf einem Dschungel-Planeten. Noch viel faszinierender finde ich aber die Anzeigen für den ganzen Merchandise-Kram und da bin ich dann über diese Retro-Sensation gestolpert:
Die haben damals tatsächlich schwarz-weiße Filmausschnitte ohne Tonspur verkauft? WTF?! (Ja, ich weiß, es gibt auch die farbige Superdeluxe-Box mit Sound. Trotzdem.) Ich bin verdammt froh, im Jahr 2008 zu leben. We’ve come a long way, baby, und ich schau mir jetzt auf der Couch einen Film an. In Farbe und mit Ton. Und ich kann mit nur einem Klick an genau die Stelle springen, die ich grade sehen will. Wahnsinn!

Doku: The History of SciFi-Television
Ich habe mir ja neulich die olle Buck Rogers-Serie aus den 80ern in einer DVD-Box gekauft, purer TV-Trash, aber dermaßen spaßig. Alleine Twiki war das Geld wert. Und jetzt stoße ich in den unendlichen Weiten des Cyberspace auf eine Doku über die ganzen ollen Sci-Fi-Serien von Flash Gordon, Twilight Zone und Hulk bis hin zu natürlich Star Trek. Aaaaaaw! The World’s First Laptop? (c. 1982)
the world’s first laptop, known as the GRiD Compass, was actually put into production and was generally available. It was designed in 1979 and made available in 1982. As each unit sold for over $8,000 however (taking inflation into account, that’s the equivalent of $18,000 today), they weren’t generally bought by the public, but were very popular with the US government.
Newton the Household Robot (1989)
Ablestmage.com (via Waxy.org) points us to terrific video of a personal household robot named Newton. “He” was marketed by the company SynPet in 1989 with this VHS promotional video.

His initial inspiration for Famous Monsters of Filmland was noticing that kids were staying up late to watch old Universal horror movies on TV. In his youth, kids went and saw monster movies at neighborhood theaters. But with the coming of TV, older theaters were being dismantled, leaving the movie studios with a lot of black and white movies which they sold quickly in package deals to TV stations.
