Interview: Lykke Li
Vor ein paar Tagen bin ich durch den Blogeintrag meines Namensvetters Nico von Jackpot Baby! auf die schwedische Künstlerin Lykke Li aufmerksam geworden. Nach ein paar kurzen Hörproben auf ihrer MySpace-Seite habe ich mir ihre aktuelle EP bei iTunes gekauft und war begeistert. Nach kurzer Recherche fand ich heraus, das sie in Kürze ihr Debüt veröffentlichen wird. Und da dachte ich mir, ich frage sie, ob sie mir ein paar Fragen beantwortet. Und zu meiner Freude war sie dazu bereit.

Like the million-dollar homepage before it, Audio Uprising asks people to buy little advertising plots on a big grid; the twist is that each plot links to a band profile page rather than to a sponsor’s website. Each 10 pixel X 10 pixel block on the site costs $10, and there’s no limit to how many blocks a band can buy, although they can only upload one song per grouping.

und dann bemerkst du irgendwann, wie du spuren hinterläßt, im leben anderer menschen: kollateralartefakte. diese kleinen bezüge, dinge, elemente, die einen anderen begleiten, in form von songs oder wissen oder formulierungen oder außenwirkung oder denkweisen, denen du dein stempelchen aufgedrückt hast, wissentlich oder unwissentlich, irgendwann einmal. und du bemerkst, wie diese dinge reflektiert werden, denn die meisten äußerungen und wahrnehmungen sind eben doch nur reflexion in irgendeiner form. und dir wird also bewußt, in so einem kleinen kurzen moment (und “moment” müßte man jetzt eigentlich englisch aussprechen, glaube ich, ohne es begründen zu können), daß das leben von dings in dieser einen ausprägung, in diesem einen detail, beeinflußt wurde von bums. du spürst, daß du sinn machst (und das, wiederum, nicht in der banal-englischen fehlübersetzung, sondern viel grundlegender auf deutsch). und daß das vielleicht die einzig gültige, die einzig legitime, die einzig anwendbare definition für “sinn machen” mit lebens-bezug sein könnte. und du staunst und erschrickst, gleichzeitig. wie üblich.

Experimental Philosophy
It’s part of a recent movement known as “experimental philosophy,” which has rudely challenged the way professional philosophers like to think of themselves. Not only are philosophers unaccustomed to gathering data; many have also come to define themselves by their disinclination to do so. The professional bailiwick we’ve staked out is the empyrean of pure thought. Colleagues in biology have P.C.R. machines to run and microscope slides to dye; political scientists have demographic trends to crunch; psychologists have their rats and mazes. We philosophers wave them on with kindly looks. We know the experimental sciences are terribly important, but the role we prefer is that of the Catholic priest presiding at a wedding, confident that his support for the practice carries all the more weight for being entirely theoretical. Philosophers don’t observe; we don’t experiment; we don’t measure; and we don’t count. We reflect. We love nothing more than our “thought experiments,” but the key word there is thought. As the president of one of philosophy’s more illustrious professional associations, the Aristotelian Society, said a few years ago, “If anything can be pursued in an armchair, philosophy can.”

It began as one critically acclaimed remix of “Machine Gun” that was begging for more drums and snowballed into an all out reinterpretation of Portishead’s minimal masterpiece. Most are by NFC but we enlisted a couple of other producers, namely Flufftronix, 12th Planet, ASiH and A. Black, to round out the album. A few tracks were left in a somewhat recognizable state but most were torn to shreds and reassembled into an almost unrecognizable form. The individual tracks cover a broad range of styles from house to electro to minimal to maximal that all came together to make one hell of an album.
