Jeff Barks Fotoserie „Flesh Rainbows“ ist absolut fantastisch (und NSFW), die Bilder sehen aus wie Gemälde, der Einsatz von Licht und Farben ist einmalig und die Bilder sind immer auf so ‘ne subtile Art creepy. Das Bild oben zum Beispiel sieht nach einem kitschigen Mädchenzimmer mit Blümchen und Einhörnern und Rüschen und sowas aus… und dann entdeckt man den toten Goldfisch.

Claire Martin wollte zunächst Sozialarbeiterin werden, ist dann aber auf Fotografie umgeschwenkt. Ihr Fotoserie über die sozialen Brennpunkte der Vancouver Downtown Eastside hat ihr mehrfache Auszeichnungen eingebracht, nochmal eine Spur interessanter finde ich aber ihre Reihe „Slab City“, in der sie eine Kommune portraitiert, die in der Colorado Wüste in Kalifornien in Trailern und verlassenen Bunkern lebt.
Der Herr mit dem bunten Hut ganz oben ist Poohba, das zweite Bild zeigt ein „old sewer tank home with hanging bed“.
The people who stay year after year could be described as poverty stricken, living in possibly the worst conditions in the USA, and some residents would tell you this is the truth. Others fiercely defend their lifestyle as a deliberate choice to reject the mainstream society. For these people Slab City provides a freedom they’d never experienced before.
There are others who were forced here through circumstance; society wont tolerate them due to their pasts as felons, addicts or vagrants, but who whole heartedly embrace the opportunity to live in a community that wont judge them. Slab City is a place for the broken and desperate and for the fierce defenders of freedom from tyranny. But more than anything else, it is what this small group of people call home.

Bei den Filmfreunden hatte ich neulich erst ein 1978er Making-Of vom ersten Film gepostet: Star Trek (1978) – Making Of-Featurette
Dean Rogers hat die Plätze fotografiert, an denen Brühmtheiten in den Tod gefahren sind, jeden einzelnen davon am Todestag zum einigermaßen exakten Zeitpunkt des Unfalls, aus der Perspektive der Verstorbenen. Nicht wirklich creepy, aber dennoch irgendwie unheimlich. Das da oben ist die Kreuzung der California State Route 41 mit der California State Route 46, an der James Dean in der Abenddämmerung frontal in einen Ford raste.
Der Rest von Dean Rogers’ Portfolio kann sich auch sehen lassen: Der Mann war Still Photographer beim Ian Curtis-Biopic „Control“ und ein paar Filmplakate hat er auch gestaltet.
Dean Rogers has meticulously photographed on the anniversary of a death and at the exact time, from the precise position of the car before impact, the view which confronted the nine iconic subjects he has selected – Jayne Mansfield, Marc Bolan, Helmut Newton, Grace Kelly, Jackson Pollock, Eddie Cochrane, Princess Diana, James Dead and Albert Camus. The result is nine haunting images, made strange by the knowledge of who died in the landscape he has shot.
Frederic Fontenoy hat diese Slit-Scan-Fotoserie von 1988 bis 1990 geschossen. Die Slit-Scan-Technik belichtet einen Film nicht auf einmal, sondern durch einen Schlitz in einem gewissen Zeitraum, den gleichen Effekt erhält man, wenn man dem Leuchtkörper eines Kopierers oder Scanners folgt, womit man die abgefahrensten Motive erhält.
Jessica Grindstaff und Erik Sanko haben ihre Wohnung in New York in eine Kuriositätensammlung voller Anatomie-Exponate verwandelt. Ich dachte ja immer, ich wäre ein Freak, aber sowas würde selbst ich mir nur auf einen ausgebauten Dachboden stellen, oder sowas, und nicht ins Wohnzimmer.

Alex Welsh fotografiert unter anderem soziale Brennpunkte in San Francisco und dabei kommen zum Glück nicht nur die üblichen körnigen, schwarzweißen, verwischten Bilder bei raus (die aber auch), sondern auch ganz oft einfach Schnappschüsse von der Straße, die das Leben abbilden. Sehr schön!

Mr. Toledano hat eine neue Fotoserie am Start, in der er Leute portraitiert, die sich ein paar mal zu oft unters Messer eines Schönheitschirurgen gelegt haben. Beeindruckend an diesen Bildern ist die eingefangene Verletzlichkeit des Menschen, ohne die Freakigkeit des Themas aufzugeben. Sweet!

Marc Da Cunha Lopes’ neue Fotoserie „HPL“ (von Lopes waren schon die fantastischen Fotos aus fiktiven Real Life-Retrogame-Fabriken) bildet Menschen in lovecraftschen Transformationsprozessen ab und trotz aller Tentakel und Blut finde ich die Aufnahmen seltsam subtil, dabei aber oder grade deshalb extrem creepy.
In seinem Portfolio (klick auf „Marc Da Cunha Lopes“, dann auf „Amusement“) gibt’s noch eine sehr schöne Serie mit riesigen Kakerlaken, doing Science. Eins dieser possierlichen Tierchen muss ich mir hier natürlich auch noch reinkleben:

Niall O’Brien dokumentiert mit seiner Kamera seit ein paar Jahren das Leben einer Bande Punks aus dem Südwesten Londons, jetzt hat er eine Ausstellung namens „Good Rats“ in der Galerie Art Work Space (falls jemand in London weilt: Die Ausstellung läuft bis 11. März, hier die Adresse: Lower Ground Floor, The Hempel Hotel, 31-35 Craven Hill Gardens, London, W2 3EA).
Rüde, verroht, abgefuckt, versoffen, ungewaschen. Gleichzeitig zart, feinfühlig, liebevoll. Mit einem Wort: Grandios. Unbedingt durch das komplette Portfolio klicken, ganz ganz großartig, endlich mal wieder Fotografie, die mich umhaut und vielleicht höchstens getoppt wird von Mike Brodie, the Polaroid Kidd, über den ich hier mal was gebloggt hatte.
The show entitled ‘GOOD RATS’, opens on February 1st 2010 and marks the first substantial exposition of work from the ‘Superheroes’ series – an ongoing project that has seen O’Brien living alongside, and observing the lives of, a group of young punks from South-West London over the last three years.
During this time, the artist has seen the group begin to grow from adolescents to young men, following them on their adventures from Brighton to Berlin and documenting their exploits. O’Brien has created a series of photographs so strikingly beautiful that, at first glance, they might belie their raw, uninhibited and primal content. Gradually earning the trust of the group, who to others may seem entirely impenetrable, has enabled him to gain access to some particularly personal and poignant moments in the lives of his subjects.

Vans and the places where they were documents surviving custom and conversion vans across the West and examines the dialogue which exists between a van’s design aesthetic and that of its surrounding environment. The project began in 1996 and currently consists of hundreds of images shot on 120mm film.
Die meisten Sachen in Riccardo Bagnolis Portfolio finde ich recht gewöhnlich, aber ich liebe diesen Shot einer Großwildjägerin mit erlegtem Einhorn, Snoopy, Bugs Bunny und Helly Kitty.

I frequented the local clubs, Whisky A Go-Go, The Starwood, Godzilla’s, Cathay De Grande, Hong Kong Café and the much larger venues, Stardust Ballroom, Devonshire Downs, The Olympic Auditorium and The Vex, photographing some of my favorite bands such as Black Flag, The Minutemen, The Plugz, Fear, X, Darby Crash Band, The Stains, Red Cross, Circle Jerks, The Adolescents, TSOL, etc.

My work involves the construction of small-scale meticulously detailed models using various materials and objects to create emotive landscapes. Every aspect from the construction to the lighting of the final model is painstakingly pre-planned using methods which force the viewers perspective when photographed from a specific angle. Using a mixture of photographic techniques such as scale, depth of field, white balance and lighting I am able to drastically alter the appearance of my materials.

Seit seinem Tod 1997 wird William Burroughs Appartment, in dem er zuletzt wohnte, in genau dem Zustand erhalten, in dem es damals war. Peter Ross hat nun die Gelegenheit bekommen, Burroughs Zeugs (Schuhe mit Löchern, Bücher über die medizinischen Folgen von „Karate Blows“ und sowas, was man eben so im Haus hat) zu fotografieren.
How did you end up photographing William Burroughs’s stuff?
William Burroughs lived for many years in the former locker room of an 1880s YMCA, on the Bowery in New York City. The almost windowless space was known as The Bunker. When he died in 1997, his friend and mine, John Giorno, kept the apartment intact, with many of Burroughs’s possessions sitting as they were. Part of the space is now used for Buddhist teachings, and the apartment is a wonderful mix of Buddhist wall hangings and pillows and carpets and Burroughs’ personal furniture and collections.
Is the room still intact?
His bedroom is as he left it, with all his stuff in place. Giorno looks after it, and occasionally houses visiting artists and friends and Buddhist teachers who come to teach in the main area of the space.

Das Forum Skyscraper City hat jede Menge Bilder aus Los Angeles, stellenweise über einhundert Jahre alt (und einige wenige sind Crime Fotos, allerdings nicht wirklich schlimm) und das Forum Wired New York hat Bilder aus dem New York der 70er (es geht alle paar Jahre eine ähnliche Sammlung durch die Blogs, das hier sind andere Pics).
Cedric Delsaux hat eine neue Star Wars-Real Life-Fotoserie am Start, diesmal mit dem Falken und Darth in Dubai. Das Bild mit dem AT-AT im Nebel finde ich eigentlich am besten, das gabs aber weder auf Delsaux Website oder auf der Seite zur neuen Ausstellung, sondern nur bei io9 und ich habe keinen Schimmer, wo die das her haben. Aber schick isses auf jeden Fall.
The recent photo works of Cedric Delsaux, the final installment of his Dark Lens trilogy dealing with the fact and fiction of modern urban space, can be viewed as an attempt to approach this enigmatic, emblematic city, using cinematic futurism as a tool to get a grasp on the present. The Selby, das weltbeste Blog über Einrichtung und sowas, bringt im März 2010 das erste Buch zum Blog raus. Todd Selby besucht jetzt schon seit 3 Jahren (glaube ich) Künstler, Kreative und Irre in ihren Wohnungen, meistens in und um New York, und fotografiert diese in ihrem Zuhause. Und das ist allermeistens superschön anzusehen und hochinteressant. Meine Ausgabe habe ich grade vorbestellt, you should, too.
“The Selby Is in Your Place” was conceived when Todd Selby began taking portraits of dynamic and creative people – authors, musicians, artists, designers and other cultural tastemakers – in their home environments and posting them on his blog. Nosy by nature, he was interested in seeing how someone’s personal style is reflected in their private spaces. Lucky for us, he found his answer in the colour-rich, eclectic and varied spaces he visited while photographing a diverse group of subjects in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney and London.
Some of his subjects are famous and some are not. Some are rich, others aren’t. Some are photographed in their apartments or houses, while others are shown in their studios or offices. What they have in common are unique spaces bursting with energy and personality that together create a colourful hodgepodge of inspirational interiors. Sehr schöne Fotoserie von Sato Shintaro. Der klettert in Tokyo Feuerleitern hoch und fotografiert die Seitengassen aus der Höhe bei Nacht. Ich hatte die Bilder schonmal vor ein paar Jahren, aber anscheinend lautete damals die Überschrift sowas wie „Whoohoo“, jedenfalls finde ich das Posting nicht mehr und ich glaube, seit damals sind auch ein paar Bilder dazugekommen.

Wireds Raw File hat ein Preview auf Matthew Niederhausers Fotoband Sound Kapital, das den wachsenden Rock-Underground in China zeigt. Sehr schöne Fotos vom Punk in Bejing und ich bin sehr gespannt, ob die Mittelfinger-Attitüde irgendwann auch mal politische Folgen haben wird.
Tight pants, cool haircuts and rock music. They’re commonplace, even cliché, in the United States, but they’re now the icons of a complex transformation in China.
The country’s ever-growing consumer culture almost requires an increased sense of individuality and its own counterculture. And considering the shape and energy of its emerging underground music scene, it’s hard not to project a parallel mindset onto China similar to that of the United States in the 1960s and ’70s.
But photographer Matthew Niederhauser, whose new book Sound Kapital documents the newly formed underground Beijing rock scene, says such projection is a mistake.
“Too often,” says Niederhauser, “I see journalists who parachute into Beijing for a few days seeking out performers who will feed them controversial quotes.” The motivations of these bands, he says, are not so easily classified. “The music scene is not about revolution right now, but about embracing an alternative, creative and open lifestyle in Beijing — something that China desperately needs.”

Todd Owyoung ist Konzertfotograf und hat bislang Fotos von… allen geschossen. Seine neueste Bilderserie stammt vom Kiss-Konzert im Sprint Center in Kansas City, wo sie 35jähriges Jubiläum ihres Alive-Albums feierten. Ich mag Kiss ja sehr gerne, die machen zwar eher Disco statt Rock und ich höre die auch nicht, aber die Idee mit dem Make-Up war Glamrock to the Max und sie haben damit Archetypen des Rawk geschaffen. Und deshalb finde ich die Fotoserie auch so super.
Hands down, one of the most fun and exhilarating concerts to photograph in 2009. After 35-years, KISS proved to this music photographer that they still have one of the most fun rock shows filling arenas on the globe.
KISS was flat out fun to photograph. It’s truly one of the few shows where I’ve felt that the band was basically attacking the photographers in the photo pit with a constant stream of mugging. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, the remaining original members of the band, were particularly playful for the cameras.
