72 Pencils is a geometric construction of 72 pencils, assembled into a work of art. Restricted to a signed limited edition of twenty-five, each shares a common form, yet each is unique. The form is an arrangement of four intersecting hexagonal tubes that penetrate each other in a fascinating three-dimensional lattice. Each of the sculptures in the edition is constructed with a different type of pencil, so each is a one-of-a-kind object.
Ein damals 16jähriger Streetartist hatte ein paar Artworks über seine Website vertickt, die unter anderem Damien Hirsts Jewelskull enthielten. Der war sauer, verklagte ihn und forderte die Arbeiten von dessen Kunst-Dealer, der sie auch prompt herausgab, stand damals alles schon auf Nerdcore.
Der Streetartist Cartrain ist jedenfalls jetzt in eine Hirst-Ausstellung gelatscht und hat ein paar BuntBleistifte geklaut, die Teil einer Installation waren und hat ein paar Erpresserbriefe gefaked, auf denen stand, wenn Hirst seine Arbeiten nicht herausrücke, würde er die Stifte anspitzen. Klingt bekloppt, Cartrain wurde allerdings erwischt und wegen Kunstraub angeklagt. Die BuntBleistifte wurden auf einen Wert von £500.000 geschätzt und das hier könnte sich in Folge als einer der größten Kunstraube in England erweisen. BuntBleistifte!
When Cartrain walked into Tate Britain and made off with a few HBs in July, he believed it was a harmless game of tit-for-tat as part of an ongoing feud. He originally locked horns with the millionaire artist last year, when he used an image of Hirst’s famous diamond-encrusted skull, For the Love of God, to create collages that were put up for sale on an art website.
Hirst reported him to the Design and Artists Copyright Society and a string of legal letters were sent to Cartrain’s art dealer, Tom Cuthbert, at 100artworks.com, about the teenager’s pieces, also called For the Love of God. The online gallery surrendered them to Hirst with a verbal apology.
Taking revenge, Cartrain took the box of pencils that were part of Hirst’s sculpture, Pharmacy, which was being shown as part of its Classified exhibition that closed at the end of last month.
He then created a “wanted”-style poster that read: “For the safe return of Damien Hirst’s pencils I would like my artworks back that DACS and Hirst took off me in November. It’s not a large demand… Hirst has until the end of this month to resolve this or on 31 July the pencils will be sharpened. He has been warned.”

Japanese design house, Felissimo’s 500 Colored Pencils is a set so vast and precise that it is itself a work of art. Like an atomic breakdown of the color spectrum, the group consists of 500 pencils, each crafted with serene specificity so that no hue has gone uncaptured. Upon ordering on a subscription basis, the pencils begin to arrive in an assortment of 25 similar hues. Over the 19 months that follow, the collection evolves slowly and intentionally into a rainbow’s array of possibility.

This mound you see before you is constructed out of all of the acrylic paint I’ve used since 1990! It started out as my friend Carl Wayne’s masonite oil pallet which he thought was too big so he cut his in half and tossed it (the piece you see) in the trash. Way back then it was just a flat piece of 1/4 inch board but when I pulled it out of the trash and started using it as my acrylic pallet it began to grow.
