Vor knapp einem Jahr sind auf rätselhafte Weise tonnenweise HD-Videos der letzten Nine Inch Nails Konzerte der Lights In The Sky Tour 2008 ins Netz geleaked, die Fans haben sich auf der Website thisoneisonus.org organisiert und die Clips zu einem Konzertfilm geschnitten. Der wurde jetzt pünktlich zu Weihnachten fertig und ist in… allen Formaten verfügbar inklusive BlueRay, oben die Youtube-Version.

Vom Überraschungsauftritt von Gary Numan während NiNs Abschiedstournee hatte ich im Juli schonmal ein Video gepostet, jetzt haben die Jungs das offizielle Video, gefilmt auf der Bühne von Rob Sheridan, in ihrem Vimeo Channel gepostet.

Nico hat noch den Song „Metal“, den NiN gemeinsam mit Numan an diesem Abend spielten und es scheint ganz so, als ob die weitere gemeinsame Aktionen planen.

Am Mittwoch hat NiN auf einem ihrer Gigs ihrer Abschiedstournee niemand geringeres als Gary Numan auf die Bühne geholt und sie haben zusammen nichts geringeres als „Cars“ (und „Metal“, hier eine Wackelcam-Version) gespielt, einem der besten Tracks der 80s, enorm einflußreich auf alles, was danach an elektronischer Musik kam. Snip von Quietus:

Kleiner Nachtrag zu Josh Freeses Superlimited Edition-Album-Aktion, in der er sein neues Album für Wahnsinns-Preise und Wahnsinns-Varianten verkaufte (vorher auf Nerdcore: NINs Drummer goes solo mit einer 75000$-Limited Edition-Platte). Oder doch lieber Panzerfahren mit Aphex Twin? Hier jedenfalls Josh Freeses Mail von letzter Woche, die auf dem NIN-Forum gepostet wurde:

The guy from Florida that bought the $20,000 package and I have been joined at the hip since Sunday and I won’t even go into all the stuff that we’ve done in the past 4 days but I’ve already gone above and beyond for him and we’re continuing to have a blast. I’ll start posting stuff soon on my website and on youtube but just to give you a quick idea…mini-golf with Maynard James Keenan, pizza at Mark Mothersbaugh’s house, sensory deprivation tank sessions, a signed snare drum I used on a Nine Inch Nails tour, slumber party at the Queen Mary, going to gigs of mine with me, pulling items out of my closet, etc, etc……He’s a great kid and a friend for life. We’re having him check out of his hotel and stay at our house tomorrow night. It’s a LONG, LONG story that I’ll write about later. You can laugh when I say this but it’s true when I tell you that he came into my life for a reason other than just the $$. I actually feel bad about taking the $$ because at this point I’m not hanging out with him or pretending to be his friend for the cash. He got all of his stuff (and a bunch more that wasn’t on the original menu) a while ago. He’s a sweet 19 year old kid who’s had a really rough last couple years (like REALLY fucking rough.) Like….this money he spent to come out here is part of a inheritance he received (you can fill in the blanks there.) I feel like his big brother and I’m trying to make this one of the best weeks of his life.

“It’s totally worth it,” Mrzyglocki told Wired.com in a phone interview Thursday, as he prepared to go to a studio with Freese. That night, they laid down tracks for a couple of songs that the drummer is writing about Mrzyglocki — another element of the elaborate package.

Freese’s experiment comes as the music industry is grappling with steep declines in traditional sales. It’s one of the most off-the-wall schemes yet to test fans’ taste for the type of “freemium” pricing pioneered by Radiohead and Freese’s former Nine Inch Nails bandmate, Trent Reznor.

For Mrzyglocki, the $20,000 package has turned into a ticket to mingle with rock ‘n’ roll royalty. He’s met lots of Freese’s musician friends during his stay in Los Angeles, including former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash and most of the members of Tool and A Perfect Circle. Mrzyglocki called the experience “the most fun I’ve had in a long, long time.”

The Florida teen said he first got wind of Freese’s tiered-pricing packages from Tool’s website. With the country in the midst of a financial mess and his birthday fast approaching, Mrzyglocki figured his broke friends would be getting him “half-assed postcards or T-shirts or something.”

To avoid a birthday bummer, the Florida teen treated himself to the $20,000 package, which featured a mini-golf game with Tool singer Maynard James Keenan and Devo front man Mark Mothersbaugh. Freese plays drums in Devo and in one of Keenan’s side projects, A Perfect Circle.

Mrzyglocki’s friends were shocked when he told them what he’d done.

“Their jaws dropped instantly,” he said.

Mein Buddy und Mitbewohner Jeriko hat ein halbstündiges Making Of-Video zu Nine Inch Nails „Closer“ (hier das komplette Musikvideo auf Vimeo) von Regisseur Mark Romanek und stellt sich in diesem Zusammenhang eine sehr berechtigte Copyright-Frage.

Das Making-of kommt von der Closure-DVD. 1997 gab es Closure bereits als Doppel-Videokasette, Trent Reznor wollte 10 Jahre später selbiges nochmal auf DVD rausbringen, durfte aber wegen Markenstreitigkeiten mit dem Label nicht. Über komische Irrwege, fragt mich nicht wie, ist die DVD dann bei PirateBay gelandet, das Making-of Video da oben kommt auch davon, und war, und das ist wichtig, nicht auf der VHS-Kasette enthalten. Da frage ich mich doch gerade, wenn das Material nie zu kaufen war, und auch nie zu kaufen sein wird, dann entsteht dem Inhaber der Rechte ja auch kein Schaden, oder?

Josh Freese, der Drummer der Nine Inch Nails, bringt ein Solo-Album heraus und macht damit so ungefähr dasselbe, wie Trent Reznor mit den NIN-Platten, mit dem kleinen Unterschied, dass es keine Gratis-Version gibt, dafür aber mehr Deluxe-Versionen. Unter anderem eine 75000$-Version, wobei man annehmen kann, dass der Herr hier beliebte, zu scherzen. Vielleicht aber auch nicht und demnächt kann man mit ihm Pilze essen und mit dem Lamborghini von Danny (Tool) durch Hollywood kurven.

Trent Reznor hat das Album „Ghosts I-IV“ selbst bei Pirate Bay hochgeladen und machte mit diesem Album eigentlich den konsequenteren Radiohead. Jetzt führt genau dieses Album, das es an jeder Ecke (legal!) für lau gab, die Verkaufscharts von Amazons MP3-Store an. Mindestens bemerkenswert. Das Modell bietet zwar immer noch keinen Ansatz für Newcomer, aber dieses Beispiel zeigt, dass zumindest etablierte Bands im Grunde im Jahr 2008 kein Label mehr brauchten.

Amazon recently published a list of its 100 best-selling albums of 2008, and guess which one is on top? It’s the Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts I-IV, which band front man Trent Reznor personally uploaded to the Pirate Bay and the private music tracker What.cd earlier last year. Reznor also offered a free download of the album from the band’s website and licensed it under a Creative Commons license.

It was pretty clear early on that those free releases didn’t harm the commercial success of Ghosts I-IV. Fans paid more than 1.6 million dollars for downloads and deluxe edition physical releases of the album in the first week after its release alone. The album also got nominated for a Grammy award just a few weeks ago, and Reznor followed up Ghosts I-IV with another album that got released via the band’s own Bittorrent tracker.

NINs letztes Album „The Slip“ gab es für lau zum Download (vorher bei Nerdcore), jetzt haben sie die Download-Zahlen geographisch aufgesplittet veröffentlicht… als Google-Earth-Datei. Den Rekord der am meisten runtergeladenen Alben halten übrigens die Fiji Inseln.

Trent Reznor über Musik im Web: Take It. It’s Free.

Die New York Times hat einen fantastischen Artikel über Nine Inch Nails-Frontmann Trent Reznor, in dem er schließlich sagt, wie es eben ist und er überdenkt in dem Artikel seine Haltung zum Saul Williams-Album, das er ebenfalls zum Download und variablen Preis online gestellt hat, was er zunächst als Fehlschlag einschätzte. Mittlerweile hat er seine Meinung dann doch sehr revidiert.

“It’s all out there,” he added. “I don’t agree that it should be free, but it is free, and you can either accept it or you can put your head in the sand.”

Last year Mr. Reznor produced and bankrolled an album for the socially conscious hip-hop poet Saul Williams, “The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust.” When record labels didn’t want it, Mr. Reznor put it online: free to the first 100,000 downloaders as good-quality MP3 files or $5 for more high-fidelity files. He had thought that fans would willingly pay the price of a latte to support musicians directly. But fewer than 20 percent did so. “I think I was just naïve.”

At the time he called the project a failure, but he has reconsidered. “The numbers of the people that paid for that record, versus the people that paid for his last record, were greater,” he said. “He made infinitely more money from that record than he did from his other one. It increased his name value probably tenfold. At the end of the day, counting free downloads, it was probably five or six or seven times higher than the amount sold on his last record. I don’t know how you could look at that as a failure.”

Trent Reznor scheint ja echt Gefallen an dem ganzen Online-Selbstvertriebs-Ding gefunden zu haben. Grade mal 2 Monate nach dem Release von „Ghosts I-IV“ veröffentlicht die Band mit „The Slip“ schon wieder ein neues Album, in drei Millionen Formaten, Qualitäten und unter CC-Lizenz. Ich frage mich zwar immer noch, wie sowas auch bei jungen, unbekannten Bands funktionieren könnte, aber wie auch immer: they did it, again!

Totom, französischer Mashup-Künstler, hat das Album „Year Zero“ der Nine Inch Nails gemasht.

Here is the first volume out of the Bootleg is Resistance trilogy, this is a triple mashup album made around songs by Nine Inch Nails from the album Year Zero, which are mixed up with completely stranger songs, most of the time. Reznor vs. Radiohead: Innovation Smackdown

We were tempted to let the groups coexist peacefully at the forward edge of digital distribution until Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor accused Radiohead of betraying fans by selling them low-quality files. In light of Reznor’s accusations, we put together a 10-round, voting-enabled smackdown to find out which band is really blazing the trail of innovation.

NIN: komplettes Album gratis unter CC bei Archive.org

Trent Reznor geht den ganzen Weg und stellt das neue Album der Nine Inch Nails in CC-Lizenz komplett (also Ghosts I-IV) auf Archive.org zur Verfügung:

Als kleines i-Tüpfelchen stellt Trent Reznor das komplette Album mit allen 36 Tracks jetzt auf Archive.org unter einer Creative Commons Lizenz zum freien Download zur Verfügung. Und zwar sowohl im Flac-Format als auch in einem extrem guten MP3-Format (320kb/s). Hut ab!

Nachdem Reznor jüngst noch Radiohead kritisierte, weil sie eben nicht konsequent genug seien, ist dies der genauso mutige wie konsequente Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Willkommen im Internet, Musik, altes Haus. Hat ja nur zehn Jahre gedauert.

Nicht Trent Reznor hat das Album bei Archive.org hochgeladen, sondern Falk war’s:

Reznor: Radiohead offering was insincere, industry is inept

“I think the way [Radiohead] parlayed it into a marketing gimmick has certainly been shrewd,” Reznor said when speaking to Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Michael Atkin. “But if you look at what they did, though, it was very much a bait and switch to get you to pay for a MySpace-quality stream as a way to promote a very traditional record sale.”

Reznor is referring to Radiohead’s release of “In Rainbows” as lossy 160kbps (max) MP3 downloads, which many would argue are sub-par when compared to DRM-free offerings from Amazon and iTunes Store (both of which offer 256kbps DRM-free music). Furthermore, Radiohead’s album is also no longer offered as a digital download, as the band openly stated that they were still going to rely on traditional labels and distribution channels for the rest of In Rainbows’ sales.

“There’s nothing wrong with that,” Reznor continued, “but I don’t see that as a big revolution [that] they’re kinda getting credit for.” In addition to the quality of Radiohead’s MP3s, NIN’s frontman also took issue with the band’s omission of artwork and altogether not taking care of the fans. “To me that feels insincere. It relies upon the fact that it was quote-unquote ‘first,’ and it takes the headlines with it.”

This new movement of independent, DRM-free music distribution is indeed undiscovered country, and both of these bands have wildly different approaches. Nine Inch Nails was among the first major acts to completely break ties with its label, diving head first into the new realm of fan interactivity and digital distribution. Radiohead, on the other hand, is clearly still depending on its label, in hindsight classifying its “In Rainbows” experiment as more of a toes-in-the-water move than the sort of bold departure on par with Nine Inch Nails’.

Were both bands’ experiments a success? There’s no doubt. While Radiohead has declined to offer actual numbers from its “pay if you want” experiment, frontman Thom Yorke has stated that “in terms of digital income, we’ve made more money out of this record than out of all the other Radiohead albums put together, forever.”

Nine Inch Nails, on the other hand, told the Chicago Tribune on March 12 that “Ghosts” has brought in 781,917 transactions from the website so far, netting a total revenue of $1.6 million in just one week. Not too bad for virtually zero marketing of an instrumental album. Instead of offering a limited digital download, then switching to CD distribution like Radiohead, however, Nine Inch Nails has offered a variety of formats—including lossless downloads, optical discs, and even vinyl—on its own from the start. Reznor also doesn’t show any signs of cutting off digital downloads, either.

When Atkin asked whether the labels would learn from successes like “Ghosts,” Reznor didn’t sound enthusiastic. “The level of ineptitude I’ve seen at the major labels is stunning. The people in charge of a lot of the digital technologies and the aspects that are decimating their business that I’ve seen are people that seem to not even be on the Internet.”

Nine Inch Nails: 1,6 Millionen Dollar im Eigenvertrieb plus Videowettbewerb

Ich hab’s ja schon gesagt: ich bin kein großer NIN-Fan. Aber die Art und Weise, wie sie derzeit im Internet agieren, die neue Technologie umarmen und mit ihren Möglichkeiten spielen, beeindruckt mich. Und es zahlt sich aus.

Sie haben mit ihrer Eigenvertriebs-Aktion bislang, Achtung!, 1,6 Millionen Dollar eingenommen. 1.600.000 Dollar mit 800.000 georderten Alben. Und das ist, Achtung!, exklusive des Verkaufs durch den Amazon-MP3-Shop, in dessen Chart sie, Achtung!, auf Platz 1 sind. Da dürfte dann auch nochmal ein hübsches Sümmchen bei rumkommen.

Und jetzt gehen sie auch in der Videoproduktion neue Wege. Wo Radiohead zur Web-Veröffentlichung ein paar Videocasts ins Netz stellten, machen NIN einen Wettbewerb via Youtube und zu gewinnen gibt es… nix.

Herr Reznor ruft zum Kurzfilmfestivalbeitrag auf, und lädt dazu ein, die Songs zu bebildern. Das Novum: Es gibt nichts zu gewinnen! Harhar. Who the fuck needs überbezahlte Videoclip-Produzenten anyway, wenn Musikfernsehen sowieso nicht mehr funktioniert, und die Fans eh immer die besseren Ideen haben… (Freakshow)

Insgesamt und auch wenn ich mit der Band selbst nichts anfangen kann: großartig! Und zur Frage, ob das denn nicht ein wenig unfair den Labels gegenüber wäre, wenn Bands, die durch die Majors groß geworden sind, sich nun von diesen abwenden, habe ich mittlerweile auch eine Meinung:

Na und? Die vergangene Liaison von Radiohead/NIN und den Labels hat sich für beide Seiten mehr als bezahlt gemacht, aber leider bieten die Majors solchen Bands, die neue Technologien in ihrer ganzen Breite ausprobieren und experimentieren wollen, keine Optionen. Da ist eine Abkoppelung der Künstler vom Label nur ein konsequenter Schritt. Wie solche Modelle auf kleine Band übertragbar sind, ist dann nochmal eine andere Frage. Auf die es aber mit Sicherheit eine Antwort gibt.

Nine Inch Nails: 1,6 Millionen Dolar mit Eigenvertrieb

Wie die Band verlauten ließ, sind bisher insgesamt 800.000 Kopien des aktuellen Werkes “Ghost I-IV” geordert und heruntergeladen worden. Dabei hat die Band insgesamt 1,6 Millionewn US-Dollar eingenommen. Eine hübsche Summe, auch wenn man die Produktions- und Serverkosten abrechnet. Der offensichtlich erfolgreiche Verkauf bei Amazon MP3 ist hier nicht mit eingerechnet.

Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead Dominate Amazon MP3 Chart

All albums, whether sold as MP3 or CD, however they’re distributed, end up on P2P networks. Those who claim Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails’ strategies lost them money have lost the plot. If Amazon’s MP3 chart (below) is any indication, Reznor and Radiohead are both doing quite well sales-wise, despite their unconventional record release strategies.

Nine Inch Nails neues Album für lau bis 300$

Ich persönlich kann ja mit NIN nicht sooo viel anfangen, dass sie aber genau wie Radiohead mit Vertriebsmodellen experimentieren und ihr neues Album zum Teil für lau als Appetizer für den Rest ins Netz stellen, rechne ich ihnen hoch an.

Nachdem Trent Reznor im letzten Jahr der Musikindustrie ein dickes großes “Fuck you!” an die Backe geklatscht und mit Saul Williams ein neues Kaufmodell ausprobiert hat, dass sich im Wesentlichen an dem von Radiohead orientierte, war ja eigentlich klar, dass es hier dann auch so kommen musste. Konkret: Die ersten 9 Tracks gibt es für lau, für alle 36(!) gibt es verschiedene Varianten von 5$(!!) aufwärts, bis hoch zur 300$ Ultra Deluxe Edition (Jeriko)

Eben grade fragte ich mich ja, warum zum Geier eigentlich Bands auf einmal Geschäftsmodelle für die Musikindustrie entwickeln müssen, die ihren digitalen Arsch zwar langsam hochbekommt, aber dabei eben extrem lahm agiert. Dabei kenne ich die Antwort auf diese Frage: weil die Major-Labels zwischen zu vielen juristischen Bestimmungen und in Verträgen verkeilt ist, um einfach mal so ein Album digital unters Volk zu bringen. Zu groß, zu fett, zu Dinosaurier.

Trent Reznor has self-released a 36 track instrumental Nine Inch Nails album in a variety of formats. Part of the campaign includes a free 9 track download sampler available on the band’s web site.

In a nod to P2P and torrent users the band itself has made a torrent of the sampler available on Pirate Bay and other torrent sites including this message:

“…Now that we’re no longer constrained by a record label, we’ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them.

Trent Reznor: Liebe Chinesen, ladet lieber runter statt bei Piraten zu kaufen

Das nenne ich doch mal Pragmatismus: Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) empfiehlt Chinesen, wenn sie seine CDs schon nicht legal kaufen können, dann sollen sie diese doch bitte irgendwo im Internet runterladen, statt irgendwelche selbstgebrannte CDs von Piraten zu kaufen.

As for the special situation in China, it does not seem to be easy to obtain Western music via legal channels, so I have the following suggestion for our fans: If you can find and buy our legal CDs, I express my thanks for your support. If you cannot find it, I think that downloading from the Internet is a more acceptable option than buying pirated CDs. Our music is easy to find on the Internet, and you might not need to spend much effort to find most of our songs. If you like our songs after you’ve heard them, please feel free to share it with your friends. As I have put all my effort and heart into my music, I sincerely hope that more and more people can share the enjoyment with us.

Geht doch!

Wir erinnern uns: Jeriko wurde abgemahnt, man zerriß sich das Maul, das Label veröffentlichte eine Frechheit von einer Pressemitteilung und man schrieb ein paar E-Mails an die Herren von Universal. Nun, irgendetwas davon schien Früchte getragen zu haben, denn:

Universal hat mich kontaktiert, um die Sache aufzuklären. Letztlich war es ein Missverständnis, nicht alle waren über die Aktionen von Nine Inch Nails im Netz informiert, und so hat man eben reagiert, wie man es bei einer Urheberrechtsverletzung tut. Man bedauert den ganzen Vorfall, hat sich bei mir entschuldigt, die Abmahnung wird zurück gezogen, die Kostennote wird ebenfalls erstattet. Als eine Art Entschädigung für den ganzen Aufwand werde ich inkl. Begleitung auf einem Konzert meiner Wahl die Band treffen.

Allerherzlichen Glückwunsch an Jeriko von mir an dieser Stelle, aber vielleicht auch an Universal, die vielleicht die ein oder andere Lehre aus dem Possenstück ziehen können im Umgang mit dem Netz.

Abmahnung, die 2876ste

Jeriko wurde abgemahnt, weil er einen Track von NIN in einen Eintrag einbaute, der auf eine PR-Aktion der Band hinwies. Rechtlich wackelfest, moralisch unterste Schublade. Lass mich raten, Rasch?
