Neue Helikopter-Bilder von 9/11

ABC hat vor einem Jahr einen „Freedom of Information Act request“ gestellt und in Zuge dessen wurden jetzt neue Bilder der Zusammenbrechenden Twin Towers veröffentlicht, geschossen von einem Polizeihelikopter aus. Ich finde den Anblick ja auch heute noch, fast zehn Jahre danach, völlig unwirklich und surreal.

The images were taken from a police helicopter — the only photographers allowed in the airspace near the skyscrapers on Sept. 11, 2001. They were obtained by ABC after it filed a Freedom of Information Act request last year with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the federal agency that investigated the collapse.

The chief curator of the planned Sept. 11 museum pronounced the pictures “a phenomenal body of work.”

The photos are “absolutely core to understanding the visual phenomena of what was happening,” said Jan Ramirez of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. They are “some of the most exceptional images in the world, I think, of this event.”

Studio Lindfors haben eine sehr schöne Serie von Illustrationen, die Manhattan und Tokyo nach der Flut durch Klimawandel zeigen. Venezianische Gondeln auf dem Times Square und Turmspringen von Hochhäusern… wenn die Apokalypse so aussieht, kann sie gerne kommen.

Called Aqualta, the project is an exquisitely produced tour of a hydrologically transformed metropolis. Gondolas float through a still-blazing Times Square; people fish atop gravel banks that have built up beside inundated skyscrapers; and an aerial network of blimps, catwalks, pedestrian skyways, and cable cars passes and sways above the Venetian streets.

Und apropos Apokalypse:

Ich habe mir ja gestern „2012“ angesehen und im Gegensatz zu Batzman bei den Filmfreunden halte ich den für einen typischen Emmerich und damit eher so mittel. Sicher, die Katastrophen-Szenen sind wahrscheinlich die am besten getricksten und, naja, katastrophigsten der Filmgeschichte und alleine dafür hat sich der Film bereits gelohnt, aber die letzte halbe Stunde ist mal wieder unerträglicher Emmerich-Schmonz, noch dazu sieht man dem Film in dieser Phase sein Budget nicht wirklich an.

„2012“ ist ganz klar ein guter Film gemessen an Emmerichs sonstigen Auswürfen, dennoch bleiben, wenn man die Tricks und den Apokalypsen-Porn mal wegwischt, nur die gleiche klebrige Emmerich-Grütze, die man aus all seinen Filmen leider schon zu genüge kennt. Wenn man damit leben kann (und das kann ich), dann kann man sich den Film durchaus im Kino ansehen, auch wenn „2012“ sein Feuer bis zur Mitte so ziemlich verschossen hat und danach zu einem ziemlich simplen Quark wird – so wie jeder Emmerich-Film.

Aber, und das muss man einfach auch sagen, die Szene der Flucht aus Los Angeles dürfte wohl die beste Szene in einem Katastrophenfilm der Filmgeschichte sein und Emmerich dürfte mit „2012“ den Katastrophenfilm to end all Katastrophenfilme vorgelegt haben. Und das ist ja schonmal was.

Stephen Wiltshire ist Autist mit fotografischem Gedächtnis. Über ihn habe ich mal eine Doku gesehen, in der sie mit ihm einen Helikopter-Rundflug über London gemacht hatten, wonach er die Stadt abgezeichnet hat, aus dem Gedächtnis und absolut korrekt. Derzeit malt er Manhattan, Designboom hat ein faszinierendes Posting dazu, Snip:

Jefferson Airplane – Manhattan Rooftop Concert (1968)

Bevor die Beatles oder U2 auf die Dächer kletterten, spielten Jefferson Airplane dort ein Konzert, schrien ein wenig rum („Hello, New York! New York, wake up you fuckers! Free Music! Free Love!“) bevor die Polizei sie abführte (im Video am Ende zu sehen). Jean-Luc Godard filmte das ganze für seinen später on D.A. Pennebaker zu Ende gebrachten Film „One American Movie“. In 1968, two years before those other guys, Jefferson Airplane played their apocalyptic psychedelia from a NYC rooftop, before police shut them down. Filmed (staged?) by Jean-Luc Godard.

The song is “The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil” from “After Bathing at Baxter’s” (1967). Amazingly, this was their single which reached #42 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #24 on the Cash Box Top 100.

Filmed for Godard’s project “One A.M.” aka “One American Movie”, which was abandoned and completed four years later by D.A. Pennebaker — with additional “making of” footage — as “One P.M.” aka “One Parallel Movie.”

Letztes Jahr kamen ein paar Jungs aus Queens, New York, auf die Idee, ihre BMX-Bikes mit richtig großen Boxen zu pimpen und so die größten rollenden Ghettoblaster ever herzustellen (vorher auf Nerdcore). Und die haben jetzt einen eigenen Kurzfilm, den sich Creative Review schonmal angesehen hat. Dort gibt’s auch noch einen Trailer ohne Sound (warum auch immer).

Made In Queens is a short film that lifts the lid on an underground scene emerging in the outskirts of New York’s Queens borough. Directed by Nicolas Randall and Joe Stevens, the film looks at a small crew of Trinida­dian teenagers, led by Nick Ragbir, who are obsessed with customising their bmx bikes with the fattest soundsystems they can possibly hook them up with.

“In this age of obsessive video sharing and social networking, nearly every action is designed and packaged for public consumption. Especially with young people,” says co-director Joe Stevens. “The immed­iate charm of Nick and his crew is that they’re the exact opposite of all that. There is nothing calculated or self-conscious about who they are. They’re just a group of friends doing some­thing to challenge themselves and have some laughs. It’s a story which would have never come from kids who were born here.”

80 Blocks From Tiffany’s

A 1979 documentary focused on gang culture in the South Bronx. The film focuses on two gangs, the Savage Skulls and the Nomads — whose members have such colorful sobriquets as Fly, Comanche, and Crazy Joe — as well as Bob Werner, a member of the Youth Gangs Task Force that oversaw the area at that time. While it doesn’t spend a whole lot of time really digging into just how violent these gangs were, it does offer an interesting snapshot of New York at the time. Crime in the 70s was on a slow and steady upward climb as the city verged on the edge of bankruptcy and the increase in gang activity was one of the more direct results of an ever growing under class confined to the outer boroughs. Few perhaps realized how bad it would become in the 80s with the introduction of crack until its peak in the early 90s.

The history of New York City in video games

It’s probably futile to do so, but here’s my partial history of New York City in video games. The difficult part is actually figuring out, in fact, if a game takes place in New York. For instance, Frogger could take place in New York, if the West Side Highway straddled a Hudson River full of logs and turtles. Pac-Man is certainly a metaphoric representation of the Financial District. If Donkey Kong is an homage to King Kong, wouldn’t that mean he’s throwing barrels from the Empire State Building?

Killer-Comedy-Liveshow aus New York: George Carlin – Jammin’ in New York

Ich seh mir grade George Carlins erste live übertragene Show „Jammin’ in New York“ von 1992 an, wo er ein paar Sachen über den damaligen Golfkrieg sagt, die ich heute genauso unterschreiben würde. Mehr oder weniger jedenfalls, man muss nur mal die Headline zum ersten Segment lesen: „Rockets And Penises In The Persian Gulf“.

When George Carlin is asked which HBO concert is his favorite, his answer is always, “Jammin’ In New York.” The reasons are several: It was his first HBO show broadcast live; it was the first he had performed in his hometown, New York City; and it was the largest audience he had ever worked before: 6,500.

But Carlin says it also represented a newfound sophistication in his writing. “It was the first time I had done truly extended pieces consisting of separate sections all flowing together. It was a big leap for me.”

Die Freiheitsstatue ist als Symbol neben dem Weißen Haus wohl das beliebteste Angriffsziehl von Riesenmonstern, UFOs und anderen Apokalypsen. Gerne als abschließendes Motiv genutzt, sagt die Lady Liberty dann immer: „Kinners, jetzt ist so wirklich und ultimativ alles im Arsch.“ Und meistens hat sie ja dann auch Recht damit.

Canadian songwriters propose monetizing P2P in Canada
While retailers like Amazon and Wal-Mart are making slow and steady progress into the realm of DRM-free music sales and the MPAA has its sights set on filtering the web, the Songwriters Association of Canada (SAC) has proposed an entirely different plan for settling the war between consumers, pirates and big media studios. Based on the observation that the thriving P2P market demonstrates consumers’ preference for sharing music instead of paying per-track or per-album, SAC proposes that each Internet-using Canadian citizen be charged a minimal $5 monthly fee directly by their ISPs. This collective monthly license fee would then be split among artists and content owners, generating new revenues and allowing former pirates to sleep better at night now that they can legally trade music for a nominal fee.

Ein Kuriosum. Im November 2004 flimmerte der erste Bericht von Frontal21 über Gewalt in Computerspielen (»Videogemetzel im Kinderzimmer«) über deutsche Bildschirme. Viele Spieler beschwerten sich damals über die einseitige und schlecht recherchierte Berichterstattung, unter ihnen Matthias Dittmayer, der die Webseite Stigma Videospiele ins Leben rief. Es folgte ähnlich geartete Berichterstattung u.a. in den Sendungen Aspekte und Panorama, es folgten weitere Beschwerden von Spielern, es folgten Stellungnahmen des Rundfunkrates, des NDR-Intendanten und mehrerer Redaktionen. Es folgte vor allem ein Video von Matthias Dittmayer über all die kleinen Ungenauigkeiten und Recherchefehler in den oben genannten Sendungen. Ein Video, das innerhalb kürzester Zeit über YouTube so weite Verbreitung fand, dass sich Dr. Claus Richter, Redaktionsleiter von Frontal21, nun genötigt sah, dazu Stellung zu nehmen und eine inzwischen drei Jahre alte Sendung zu verteidigen.
Insgesamt hält Herr Dr. Richter die Vorwürfe gegen Frontal21 »für gänzlich unbelegt, nicht stichhaltig oder irreführend.«

Can you shoot photos of things that don’t really exist? Matt Stuart is a professional photographer. He lives in England and is fascinated about people and the way they live their lives. But what is really interesting is that Matt shots photos from perspectives which create an illusion of objects and situations that don’t exist in reality.

Inherent in this civilization of consumption and technology is the waste and destruction of the vulnerable earth. The mythic world we create in our photographs mirrors our world, where nature is domesticated and controlled. The scenes we depict however, display futile attempts to save or rejuvenate nature. We portray these attempts within our work by inventing machines and contraptions from junk and obsolete equipment. These contraptions are intended to help the character we portray to jump-start a dying planet. We patch holes in the sky, create rain machines, chase storms to create electricity, communicate with the earth to learn its needs. Within these scenes, we create less refined, less scientific, more ritualistic and poetic possibilities to work with nature rather than destroy it.
