Ich hatte keine Ahnung, dass das hier existiert: Iron Maidens „The Number of the Beast“, sechshundertsechsundsechzig mal durch den MP3-Fleischwolf gedreht. Es bleibt sogar was einigermaßen hörbares davon übrig.

Hier ist ein MP3 eines Songs, der 600 mal mit der gleichen Bitrate als MP3 encoded wurde. Das Ergebnis ist, nicht weiter verwunderlich, ein ziemlicher Frequenzensalat mit zu fetter Remulade obendrauf. Auch nicht verwunderlich: Welcher Song für das Experiment ausgewählt wurde. Das ganze Experiment basiert wohl auf diesem Video eines JPGs, das 600 mal hintereinander abgespeichert wurde.
Sehr interessant wird es dann, wenn ein User auf Reddit das MP3 mit dem Original in einer Spektralanalyse vergleicht.
I think the Spectral View is the more interesting of the two. The X-axis is time, the Y-axis is frequency, and the color is amplitude. So it shows the frequencies present at any given time – basically a granularized FFT.
Which shows some interesting things – most obviously, everything above 19kHz is totally gone, and you can see that 16kHz – 19kHz is heavily aliased. The algorithm heavily compresses this range. Same for about 2kHz and below.
The other thing to note is the huge loss of dynamic range – how big the range is between the loudest and quietest parts. More dynamic range = better quality, in general. Note in the original how much contrast in color there is – lots of orange in the bass (and here you can see the beat, those orange bass spikes are bass drum hits), tapering off to red and blue as it gets higher. In the compressed: ALL RED AND ORANGE. It’s squeezed together the dynamic range to compress it.
Also, you can tell that the original is itself an mp3 and not original uncompressed audio, thanks to the hard-line at 16kHz.
Bopaboo ist einweder der beste Fake ever oder eine sehr, hm, seltsame Geschäftsidee: Ein Marktplatz für gebrauchte MP3s. Jeder von uns hat tonnenweise MP3s auf der ein oder anderen Festplatte, viele davon praktisch niegelnagelneu, völlig ohne Kratzer und sehr gut erhalten und manche sogar ungehört. Und jetzt mal ehrlich: Selbst an den MP3s, die man täglich mindestens einhundertmal durch den Musikplayer seiner Wahl laufen lässt, geht diese Dauerrotation doch eher spurlos vorrüber. Selbst Files, die man durch die enge Series of Tubes gezogen hat auf die ein oder andere Weise schauen danach immer noch genauso blendend aus, wie zuvor, kurz gesagt: MP3s sind ein hervorragendes Investment und verlieren praktisch nie an Wert.
Bopaboo.com (in addition to providing evidence that all the good domains names have been taken) say they want people to ’stop illegally sharing and start legally selling’ – although they appear to be defining ‘legal’ as ‘nobody has any idea if it’s legal or not’.
The logic behind it is that it’s legal to sell on a CD you’ve bought – so why can’t you do the same with a music file? In case you haven’t spotted it yet, the difference is that when you sell a CD, you don’t get to keep an identical copy of it for yourself. Which is probably a point that the record labels and their lawyers are making right now.
That’s unless, of course, Bopaboo have some special software that reaches onto your computer and deletes your files for you, in which case we can’t see many people flocking to use it. Grant a website the power to wipe your files? Ooooh, yeah, that sounds like an excellent idea.
Eigentlich müsste man davon ausgehen, dass die Website ein Fake ist. Nur ist sie dazu zu gut gemacht. Die sind zwar noch in Private Beta, aber hey, die haben ein Blog, die müssen das ernst meinen. Und wenn die das ernst meinen, dann sind die schon ziemlich bekloppt, wa? Ein Marktplatz für gebrauchte MP3, jetzt mal ehrlich: What the fuck!?
