Es gibt tatsächlich ein Blog namens March MODOK Madness, das seit zwei Jahren im März jede Menge MODOK-Content, meistens Illustrationen, raushaut und wer nicht weiß, wer oder was ein MODOK ist: Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing ist ein Superfiesling aus dem Marvel Universum. Ich liebe MODOK, jedesmal, wenn ich ihn sehe… ich meine, einen Superfiesling mit viel zu großem Kopf der auf einem furzenden Stuhl durch die Gegend fliegt, muss man einfach gern haben!

Dubais Marvel Theme-Park Concept-Arts doomed by Finanzkrise

Gestern sind Concept Arts zum 2007 angekündigten Marvel Theme-Park in Dubai aufgepoppt.

Late 2007, United Arab Emirate-based Al Ahli Group and Marvel Entertainment, Inc. announced a partnership that will bring Marvel’s full library of Super Heroes – including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The X-Men, Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer – to Dubai for a major new theme park destination being developed by AAG. The Marvel Super-Heroes theme park project was supposed to open in 2011 with an investment of over $1 billion USD but apparently it seems that it will open now in 2012.

Jetzt weiß ich ja nicht, wie’s Euch geht, wenn Ihr an Dubai denkt… mir gehen da vor allem die 3000 verrottenden Autos am Flughafen dort durch den Kopf, die von fliehenden Arbeitern einfach stehengelassen wurden, weil die Krise schon damals dort zuschlug. Das Thema ist ja auch schon jetzt in den vergangenen Tagen in den deutschen Medien gelandet, nur 9 Monate später.

Ob aus dem Projekt jemals etwas werden wird, ist bei der derzeitigen Entwicklung mehr als unwahrscheinlich, schließlich haben die im Moment grade erstmal verbal eine Staatspleite abgewendet, in dem sie eben keinen Bailout für ihr marodes Dubai World zur Verfügung stellen werden. Vielleicht und hoffentlich bleiben uns ab jetzt gefakete Luxusbilder aus dem Schein-Emirat in Zukunft erspart. Nett sind die Concept Arts aber trotzdem und einen Marvel Theme-Park dieser Ausmaße würde ich schon gerne sehen, aber das sind wohl leider Schäume und Träume wie Jetpacks und Flying Cars.

Jack Kirbys Mickey Mouse und mehr Marvel/Disney-Mashups

Nachdem Disney Marvel für lockere 4 Millarden Dollar gekauft hat, kommen die unvermeidlichen Marvel/Disney-Mashups rein. Superpunch sammelt hier und hier und das beste Mashup dürfte dieser Original Mickey von Marvels Jack Kirby sein, der für das 1991er Buch „The Art of Mickey Mouse“ entstand.

Back in 1991, I did a coffee table art book “The Art of Mickey Mouse”, I got artists from around the world to do their interpertation of “The World’s Favorite Mouse.” One of the first people I called was Jack Kirby. He and his wife Roz were very excited about the idea. He sent me two drawings, as I recall, and I chose this one. I colored it “animation style,” with the black line on an overlay and the background colors underneath. Jack’s contribution was part of a touring exhibit of art from the book throughout Japan. So, Marvel is called by some fans “The House that Jack Built” (not, in my opinion to take ANYTHING away from the brilliant genius Stan Lee’s more than vital part.) And here’s Jack doing Mickey! Is this weird, or what?

Nerdcore ist nun nicht wirklich bekannt für Business-Meldungen und das hier wird sehr wahrscheinlich eine der wenigen bleiben, aber fucking Disney kauft fucking Marvel. Zwar habe ich in den vergangenen Monaten (nicht zuletzt dank Nilzenburger) gelernt, dass DC Comics das unter Umständen bessere Comic Label sind (nicht zuletzt danke Vertigo, die ein paar von mir sehr gern gelesene Comics rausbringen), aber ich kann mir beim besten Willen keine Marvel Zombies unter der Riege von Disney vorstellen, auch wenn diese Idee zuletzt sehr gelitten hat und sehr verwässert wurde.

Desto länger ich aber darüber nachdenke, desto mehr Sinn ergibt ein Marvel unter Disney, denn allzuviel schenken die sich an Familienkompatibilitätsunsinn (<-- super Wort, wa?) nicht. Disney/Marvel-Mashups gerne in die Kommentare. Ich fang mal an: The Beauty and The Beast… wait…

Marvel Zombies Return

Den dritten Band der Marvel Zombies hatte ich mir gekauft, aber nicht gelesen. Den vierten habe ich mir gar nicht mehr zugelegt, mit dem Marvel Ultimate Universe kann ich gar nicht und für mich lag der Reiz der Marvel Zombies immer darin, die klassischen Helden zu veruntoten. Ein Hulk, der ein Bein verschluckt und dann zu Bruce Banner wird, wobei ihm das Bein selbstverständlich den Magen zerreisst. Yeah, that’s me.

Deshalb finde ich es schön, dass die klassischen Marvel Zombies zurückkehren in „Marvel Zombies Return“. Und noch schöner finde ich es, dass auch Seth Grahame-Smith (der mit Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) daran mitschreibt. Dann wird das vielleicht doch nochmal was mit mir und den Marvel Zombies.

Rosemann says, “A couple months ago a few of us in the office were talking about Marvel Zombies and about where we could take the story next. Our head of Sales David Gabriel brought up the fact that we hadn’t seen the most famous zombies – such as Spider-Man and Wolverine and Colonel America – since the end of Marvel Zombies 2. That led me to a conversation with fright master Fred Van Lente, who quickly dreamed up the creepy question of: Just where did those flesh-eaters disappear to after they were teleported into oblivion?

“We then had our main story idea – and our format (one issue for each week of September) — but not our creators. Fred, who has taken the Marvel Zombies saga to horrific new heights, is quite the in-demand scribe, and could only commit to writing the beginning and ending of this latest chapter (as well as lending an evil eye to oversee the middle chapters). Ich liebe diese Illustration von Wally Wood, in der Marvel Superhelden klassische Cartoon Charaktere plattmachen wollen. Der Artikel zur Illu ist ein konservatives Schmierstück, dass die scheinbare Gewalt in den Marvel Cartoons anprangert. Yeah, als ob Bugs Bunny tatsächlich ein friedliebender, harmloser Hase gewesen wäre. Den ganzen Artikel gibt’s auf Lady that’s my skull, Snip:

The accompanying article complains mostly about the violence in the new generation of cartoons featuring the “weirdies”, the Super-Heroes. While the piece does mention both sides of the argument about the effects of violence on children it comes down in favor of the classic and presumably more kid-friendly characters from animation. The author seems to have forgotten how incredibly violent the old cartoons were. They were astonishingly brutal even with the heavy editing that was performed prior to network broadcast to ensure all the explosions and maiming of bunnies at the hands of crazed opera singers were not shown and all the horror occurred between scenes or off-screen.

Additionally, the heroes have and practiced a morality that the funny animal characters never did. More often than not the anthropomorphic critters are portrayed as amoral, homicidal manipulators and every bit as immoral as the villains the super-heroes battle. At the time of this article some groups may have been of the opinion that a rodent setting off a stick of dynamite in a cat’s mouth in order to steal a piece of cheese was harmless, but using a fist made of stone to stop Dr. Doom from conquering the planet was irredeemably damaging to the psyche of children.

Crosseyed Cyclops hat (fast) alle Ausgaben der Marvel Comics Super Specials – meistens Comic-Adaptionen von Blockbuster Filmen – inklusive der hier schon gebloggten Comic-Adaptionen von „Close Encounters of the third kind“ und „Blade Runner“. Leider enthält diese Sammlung nicht die legendäre siebte Ausgabe mit „Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band“, die damals aus unbekannten Gründen noch vor der Auslieferung eingestampft wurde, Snip von Wikipedia:

The Marvel Super Special issue #7, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, was withdrawn at the last minute by Marvel due to undisclosed reasons and all copies (if any were indeed printed) were destroyed prior to distribution.

Reportedly a few copies were printed in foreign language territories such as France, the Netherlands and Germany, however no english language copies are known to exist, and even George Perez, who illustrated the comic, has stated that he has never seen a copy himself, and in the following audio interview he said that he considers it to be “the rarest piece of George Perez printed artwork you can find”

Homecoming mit Marvel Zombies

Ich liebe es. Da ist man zwei Wochen weg, kommt nach Hause und in der Post befinden sich neben Rechnungen, einer Postkarte, dem Vertrag zwischen mir und Angelika Express, laut dem ich demnächst offiziell ins Musik-Business einsteige und den Games Dead Space (naja, blöde Steuerung, doofe Perspektive und auch sonst nix neues) und Fallout 3 (bislang sehr, sehr cool) vier Bücher. Und die heißen: Marvel Zombies 2, Marvel Zombies – The Covers, Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness und Marvel Zombies – Dead Days. Dieses Wochenende verbringe ich also im Marvel Universum, mit Zombies. Braaainz! Hier übrigens alle Marvel Zombie-Cover von Arthur Suydam.

Marvel Zombies 3 Preview

Newsarama hat die ersten 11 Seiten der ersten Ausgabe von Marvel Zombies 3, und diesmal kommen die Marvel Zombies im „echten“ Marvel Universum an. Snip von Wikipedia:

Zombies invade Earth 616 – the mainstream Marvel Universe – by entering through the Nexus of Realities in Florida. Siege, Jennifer Kale, Wundarr and the Conquistador, local members of the 50 State Initiative, investigate but are attacked by what appear to be non-powered zombies and an undead Deadpool.

Machine Man and Jocasta accept a mission from A.R.M.O.R. to travel to the Marvel Zombie universe to find DNA from an uninfected human, and Portal transports them there. It is revealed that Michael Morbius, one of the scientists working with A.R.M.O.R., is actually one of the Marvel Zombies who has substituted himself for the real Morbius, whom he has held captive in secret. The zombified Morbius is part of a bigger conspiracy that threatens the Marvel Universe or as Morbius gleefully puts it “to spread the gospel”, which echoes a sentiment made earlier by the zombified Reed Richards in Marvel Zombies, who initiated such a plan to zombify the Marvel Universe.

Ich fand die Marvel Zombies ja schon immer eher mäßig gezeichnet (eber hey, sie haben Zombies, so what!), während die Cover von Arthur Suydam schon immer absolut grandios waren. Diesmal kommen die Cover von Greg Land parodieren die Cover keine berühmten Comics, sondern Filme, yay!

Unlike the prior Marvel Zombies series covers, which were zombie variations of past Marvel comics covers, Marvel Zombies 3 covers are variants of well known movie posters

Comicbook-Book: „Strange and Stranger: The World of Steve Ditko“

Steve Ditko war Miterfinder von Spiderman und Dr. Strange, verließ den Marvel Verlag aber schon 1970, nachdem er sich mit Stan Lee überworfen hatte. Fantagraphics hat jetzt eine Biografie über Steve Ditko am Start, die sein Werk noch einmal Revue passieren lässt.

Steve Ditko is best known as the co-creator, with Stan Lee, of Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, and other classic Marvel and DC characters. But, in the context of Steve Ditko’s 50-year career in comics, his creative involvement with Spider-Man is merely the tip of the iceberg. Marvel Zombies 3

Marvel Zombies 3 is a four-issue mini-series by Fred Van Lente and artist Kevin Walker (Annihilation: Nova) that kicks off in October. In the third installment about the alternate universe where superheroes have become flesh-eating zombies, Marvel Zombies 3 will show what happens when the Zombie-verse crosses over with Marvel’s 616, aka, the mainstream Marvel Universe.

It’s Iron Man!

Ich gehe jetzt erstmal in die Wanne und lese „Iron Man – Extremis“ von Warren Ellis und Adi Granov, schaue mir nachher noch den Animationsfilm „The Invincible Iron Man“ (auf Youtube in neun Teilen: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) an und bei den Filmfreunden habe ich eben aufgeschrieben, was ich von der „Iron Man“-Verfilmung halte. Wahrscheinlich hab ich schon morgen die Schnauze voll von Superhelden in Eisenrüstungen.

Kommen wir erstmal zu alldem, was „Iron Man“ richtig macht:

1.) Robert Downey Jr. ist die Idealbesetzung für Tony Stark. Er spiel den erst zynischen, dann geläuterten Milliardär mit einer Spielfreude, die schlichtweg umhaut, seine pointierten „Dialoge“ mit seinen Computern und Robotern sind klasse. Für mich schon jetzt die Besetzung des Jahres.

2.) Der Film ist der Geek-Film schlechthin. Ich meine: ein Typ, der in seiner (zugegeben: sehr, sehr großen) Garage mit der Hilfe von Cutting-Edge-3D-Technologie Eisen-Rüstungen mit Raketenschuhen zusammenbaut und dabei mit seinen Robotern redet? Geht es noch viel großartiger?

3.) Die kompletten ersten zwei Drittel des Films sind ein einziges Popcorn-Fest und ein grandioser Kick-Ass-Film für den Zwölfjährigen in uns allen. Die Effekte sind eine Wucht, der Film startet mit AC/DC, die Flugtests mit der Rüstung sind gnadenlos witzig, Robert Downey Jr. verprüht einen tollen, trockenen Humor und bis dahin hatte der Film von mir 4.5 Sterne, weil er bis dahin ein sehr, sehr unterhaltsamer, spannender, grandios anzuschauender, fucking Blockbuster war.
