Brendan Lee Satish Tang macht Mashup-Keramik, in der er klassische chinesische Vasen mit Robotern aus Mangas und Animes mischt. Ich habe irgendwie was gegen Vasen, alleine das Wort klingt schon superkomisch: Vasen… seltsam. Aber das hier ist dann doch ziemlich fantastisch.
Manga Ormolu enters the dialogue on contemporary culture, technology, and globalization through a fabricated relationship between ceramic tradition (using the form of Chinese Ming dynasty vessels) and techno-Pop Art. The futuristic update of the Ming vessels in this series recalls 18th century French gilded ormolu, where historic Chinese vessels were transformed into curiosity pieces for aristocrats. But here, robotic prosthetics inspired by anime (Japanese animation) and manga (the beloved comics and picture novels of Japan) subvert elitism with the accessibility of popular culture.

Den Hulk-Manga hatte ich schonmal in den Links versteckt, wusste aber nicht, dass der so selten und rar ist, weshalb der komplette Scan des Comics online schon eine kleine Sensation ist. Snip von Malte:
Die Hulk Mangas wurden in den 70er Jahren in dem wöchentlichen Bokura Magazin veröffentlicht und sind wirklich eine absolute Seltenheit! Da die Scnas natürlich komplett auf Japanisch sind, hat sich David Brothers von 4thletter die Mühe gemacht und sich ein wenig mit der abgewandleten Geschichte beschäftigt:
From what I and my lovely assistants managed to figure out of the story, it stars Dr. Araki, survivor of Hiroshima. Both of his parents died in the blast, and he’s come to Nevada to work on the gamma bomb. General Ross, Major Talbot, and Igor retain their names, but Rick Jones has been turned into Ricky Tenda. He’s got a Japanese mom and an American dad. Betty Ross is now Mitsuko, though Dr. Araki calls her Mitchan.
The story seems to be the usual. An honorable and kind scientist helps create something terrible, and that terrible thing blows up in his face when he rescues a young ne’er do well. A Russian spy refuses to halt the explosion, and the scientist turns into the Hulk, a beast who knows only pain and anger.
Die kompletten Scans (insgesamt 232 Bilder!!!) des japanischen Hulks, findet ihr hier: HULK (ハルク). Ich habe für Euch mal alle Bilder in ein Archiv gestoppft und hochgeladen (LINK 94MB). Die Scans sind zwar alle auf Japanisch, jedoch ist das Artwork von Yoshihiro Morifuji wirklich grandios. Aufällig ist, dass sich Kazuo Koike in der Story stark auf die tragische Seite der der Hulk Figur konzentriert hat und damit eine eher düstere Geschichte für Erwachsene geschaffen hat. Auch das Zeigen von expliziter und meist brutal dargestellter Gewalt ist ein ungewohnter Kontrast zum amerkianischen Original aus den 70ern, passt aber absolut in das Gesamtbild des japanischen Hulks.
Die Digik Gallery hat großformatige Scans von Tatsuyuki Tanakas „Cannabis Works“ inklusive einem Comic mit einer Zahn-OP in der fünften Dimension (das Comic gibts hier ohne den ganzen Cover- und Illustrations-Schnickschnack). Dort gibt es noch haufenweise weitere Bücher, größtenteils Anime- und Manga-Kram, mit dem ich nix anfangen kann, aber eben auch Scans mit Jets und Transformers oder Illustrationen zu Lord of the Rings. Das wird aber alles getoppt von Tatsuyuki Tanakas „Cannabis Works“, wunderbare WTF-Illus.
Gestern erschienen: Ein Sammelband mit der Geschichte von Batman in japanischen Mangas in den 60ern, die während der Ausstrahlung der alten Serie mit Adam West aufgelegt wurden. Eayz schreibt: „Die ins Englische übersetzte Manga-Kollektion gibt es als Taschenbuch für umgerechnet rund 28 Euro und als Hardcover für 51 Euro. Must-Have! Ob sich aber für einen 32-seitigen Manga mehr und zwei Buchdeckel ein solcher Aufpreis lohnt, darf zumindest bezweifelt werden.“ BoingBoing hat ein Review und ein paar Bilder aus dem Buch.
In 1966, manga prodigy Jiro Kuwata was commissioned to do a regular Japanese manga version of Bob Kane’s Batman comics, to tie in with the Japanese launch of the Batman TV show. Kuwata quickly decided that Kane’s scripts wouldn’t play to a Japanese audience, so he remade the Dark Knight for the expectations of a mid-sixties, manga-familiarized audience. The result was stunning: a weird blend of genius suspense and gonzo weirdness, as villains turn into dinosaurs, commit strange crimes, rise from the dead, and rampage through a mangified Gotham City that has the streamlined wonderfulness of space-age Japanese pop culture.
These comics were lost for decades, but they have resurfaced now, recovered from private collections and reprinted in Bat-Manga, a new anthology from Pantheon edited by Chip Kidd. Kidd has supplemented the material with fantastic photo spreads (by Geoff Spear) of collectible Japanese Batman toys from the era. The reproductions themselves are only minimally cleaned up, leaving intact the yellowing paper, the wildly variable print-quality, the strange nostalgic quirks of printing from that era.

That’s what fans of DC’s Caped Crusader will get if they pick up Batman: Death Mask, a new anime miniseries that doubles as the American comics debut of acclaimed Japanese creator Yoshinori Natsume, if the just-released preview pages are anything to go by.
Ich konnte mit der Marvel-Version des Star Wars-Mythos nicht allzuviel anfangen, da die Comics gegen die Filme zu behäbig, zu brav, zu miefig daherkamen und kommen. Auf StarWars.com vergleichen sie nun die Marvel-Comics mit den japanischen Mangas, die 1997 veröffentlicht wurden und die sowieso dynamischer gezeichneten Mangas sind den 70er-Marvel-Comics natürlich um Längen voraus.

Yay! Großformatige Scans eines mit Stills illustrierten Buchs über die Technologie in Akira, meinem Anime-Alltime-Favoriten.
Published in 1988 by Bandai, this is the Bible of Akira books. It’s full title is AKIRA MECHANIX 2019: Cyber Art & Mechanism From Moving Picture “Akira” and (as the title suggests) it’s about the artwork that went into making the anime.
Divided into 20 chapters, segments include:
- Photographs and vignettes used for promotion/merchandise;
- Character pages and technical model sheets of vehicles/weapons in the film;
- Illustrations/paintings by other Japanese creatives, inspired by AKIRA;
- Info on Kaneda’s Bike- mechanics, inspiration, plans, working models etc;
- Creating the Neo tokyo environment;
- Staff feedback regarding their roles in the film and their inspiration for creating Neo-Tokyo.
Im Oktober erscheint bei DC der Sammelband “Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan”, in dem erstmals jenseits von Japan die Batman-Mangas aus den 60ern veröffentlicht werden, die dort damals parallel zur TV-Serie mit Adam West vertrieben wurden. Enthalten sind zwei komplette Vierteiler und weitere verschiedene Einzelhefte plus Extras. Must-Have-Alarm!

Study Says iTunes Not P2P To Blame For Label Woes
A new study commissioned by the British recording industry has concluded that iTunes and not file sharing are to blame for the dramatic decrease in sales, reported The Register.

At a speech last week I was asked a question that has come up every day since the Radiohead (and Madonna, NIN, Prince, etc, etc) announcement: What’s going to happen to the music industry?
To which I answered “Which music industry?” You don’t mean just the one that sells CDs, do you? Because it’s a big mistake to equate the major labels and their plastic disc business with the industry as a whole. Indeed, when you stand back and look at all of music, things don’t look so bad at all.
Indeed, it appears that every single part of the music industry except the sale of compact discs is up.
- Concerts and merchandise: UP (+4%)
- Digital tracks: UP (+46%)
- Ringtones: UP (+86% last year, but probably just single-digit percent this year)
- Licensing for commercials, TV shows, movies and videogames: UP (Warner Music saw licensing grow by about $20 million over the past year)
- Even vinyl singles (think DJs): UP (more than doubled in the UK)
- And, if you include the iPod in the music industry, as I’d argue a fair-minded analysis would: UP, UP, UP! (+31% this year)
