Parisian art collective Fandango Projects have created an installation for surf brand Quiksilver that reconstructs teenagers’ bedrooms from different decades.

Called I was a teenager in the… the project was installed as part of a show by skateboarder Tony Hawk at the Le Grand Palais in Paris last week.

Ich war ja Teenager in den ausgehenden Achtzigern, Anfang der Neunziger und mein Zimmer war damals zunächst voller Picture Discs (ich hatte die goldene 12″ von Metallicas „One“ oder die Shapedisc von Megadeths Sex Pistols-Cover „Anarchy in the UK“ und solche Dinger) mit einem C64 in der Mitte, Anfang der Neunziger wurden die Platten durch Techno-Flyer ersetzt, mit denen ich meine kompletten Wände zukleisterte (die Flyer zu den Väth-Geburtstagspartys waren ein ziemliches Sammlerstück).

TurntablistPC ist ein oller Computer mit eingebautem Turntable und einem Twist: Das Teil ist ein Server, der von Websites angepingt werden kann. Bei jedem Ping spielt er eine Platte, Richtung und Länge des Abspielens sind abhängig von der Position des Hosters der Website zum Server.

TurntablistPC is a telematic hybrid of a turntable (gramophone) and an old personal computer.

TurntablistPC is a server which third-party websites can access. A small file is hosted on the TurntablistPC. Subscribing websites place a short piece of code on their pages. This code sends information to the TurntablistPC. When somebody visits one of the subscribing websites, the TurntablistPC spins the record. Control is remote and hidden. But output – audio – is local only (through speakers in the TurntablistPC).

The location of the remote website controls the direction of the spin. If the website is located east of the TurntablistPC, it spins clockwise. If it is located west of the TurntablistPC, the spin is counterclockwise.

The distance to the visiting user determines the amount of spin. If you are near the TurntablistPC, you will only scratch the vinyl. If you are far away, it will play a whole section of the record.

In Sydney haben der Digital Artist Lukasz Karluk und die Painting und Graffiti Künstlerin Maddi Boyd (KissKiss) das Projekt Time Bomb aus der Taufe gehoben. Time Bomb ermöglicht es den BetrachterInnen des Kunstwerkes, auf Time-Lapse-Fotografie udn Animationen beruhend, eine Art „Zeitreise“ durch die Entstehung des Artworks zu machen und es so interaktiv umzugestalten.

Neun urbane KünstlerInnen – DMOTE, Ben Frost, Kid Zoom, Numskull, Roach, Creon, John Doe, Bennett und KissKiss – haben an dem originalen Projekt über vier Tage hinweg mitgewirkt. Jeder ihrer Arbeitschritte wurde fotografiert und anschließend zu einem Time-Laps-Video zusammengefügt, das nun mit ein wenig Software und digitaler Technik auf Bewegungen reagiert.

Zander Blom aus Südafrika hat 17 Installationen für die Ausstellung „The Travels of Bad“ geschaffen. Dazu gehören außerdem ein Roman und ein Soundtrack aus 17 „rock-opera type symphonic drone thrash metal rock“-Songs. Whooohoo! Everything gets better with Flying Vs.

The Travels of bad is essentially a satire that looks critically at the influence that exotic cultures and their artefacts have had on the avant-garde system of European visual art from the end of the 19th century onwards.

The critique comes in the shape of mini-novella that is illustrated by a series of photographic works and accompanied by a pseudo rock-opera type symphonic drone thrash metal rock album.

Hyungkoo Lee hat die Skelett-Versionen von Cartoon-Figuren gemacht, die ich hier unverständlicherweise nicht finde, die ich hier aber ganz sicher schon hatte. Seine oder ihre Objectuals-Serie ist allerdings mindestens genauso WTF, das da oben nennt sich „Altering Features with RH5“.

Der gigantische Robot from outer space, der SMS vorliest

Robovox ist ein acht Meter hoher Roboter, der an öffentlichen Plätzen ausgestellt wird, die einen politischen Hintergrund haben. Vorm Bundestag etwa. Dann kann René eine SMS schreiben, etwa „Vorratsdatenspeicherung ist per se doof“, die wird dann von Robovox vorgelesen. Ich war ja schon immer für mehr Demos mit Riesenrobotern und überhaupt: Roboter sollten ganz allgemein sowieso viel politischer werden, finde ich.

Stefan Sagmeister-Artwork „busted“ by Cops

Stefan Sagmeister ist eine Legende unter den Designer, unter anderem für seine ausufernde Prokrastination bekannt und dafür, Deadlines gegenüber eher flexibel zu sein. Er wurde viermal für den Grammy nominiert und hat ihn für das Cover des Talking Heads-Albums „Once In A Lifetime“ schließlich auch gewonnen.

Für die Veranstaltung „Urban Play“ hat er eine Installation aus 250.000 Ein-Eurocent-Münzen gestaltet, die er auf einen Platz legte und die den Satz „Obessions make my Life worse and my Work better“ bildeten. Die Installation blieb eine Nacht liegen, dann war sie auf einmal verschwunden. Die Polizei hatte sie buchstäblich weggefegt.

It seems that the Amsterdam police were called by a resident of one of the overlooking buildings early Sunday morning to report that someone was “stealing an artwork”. As the story goes, people were pocketing a few of the coins, which was also expected, but things got a bit out of hand when a resident saw this happening. So the police responded, and, in a rather bizarre instance of police efficiency, they proceeded to “secure” the artwork, by sweeping up the entire installation.

The event is superbly captured on the flickr page of anjens, who lives in a flat overlooking the site.

Die gigantische Spinne von Liverpool (2)

La Machines gigantische Spinne (vorher auf Nerdcore) ist gestern tatsächlich durch Liverpool gelatscht. Das Video dazu ist ziemlich lahm, genauso wie das ganze Vieh, wahrscheinlich muss man wirklich dabei gewesen sein. Die Fotos von Flickr-User the-northshore sind allerdings fantastisch.

She was woken in a hail of fireworks and smoke at 1130 BST on Friday, before striding up and down in front of the arena in front of the cheering crowd. French “scientists” – La Machine’s street theatre artists – attempted to subdue her with water and snow against a backdrop of music from musicians on top of 16 cherry pickers. Liverpool Culture Company artistic director Phil Redmond hailed the opening part of the show as “fantastic”.

Die gigantische 15-Meter-Spinne von Liverpool

Da ich eine (gar nicht mal so sehr) ausgeprägte Spinnen-Phobie habe, bin ich ein totaler Fan von Riesenspinnen. In Filmen natürlich. Deshalb macht mich diese echte, trotzdem mechanische, gigantische Spinne, die heute in Liverpool aufgetaucht ist, extrem nervös. Ich meine, fuck, da hängt eine gigantische 15-Meter-Spinne in Liverpool an einem Hochhaus, das Vieh soll am Freitag zum Leben erweckt werden und durch die Stadt latschen… Ieeeeeeeeh!

Das Vieh ist natürlich Teil einer Kunstaktion, und zwar von La Machine, denselben Leuten, die 2006 diese Aktion mit einem gigantischen Mädchen im Park veranstaltet haben, die ich neulich erst entdeckt habe.

The 37-tonne beast heralds the start of a five-day piece of street theatre as part of the Capital of Culture year. It has been built by French company La Machine, which in 2006 brought the streets of London to a standstill with the Sultan’s Elephant. The spider is believed to be “waking up” on Friday.

It will descend from its current position on the side of Concourse House on Thursday to be moved to the city’s new arena, before coming to life on Friday. The creature will then begin exploring the city later that evening.

The giant Spiderman is having me for Dinner on Friday. Nochmal: Ieeeeeeeeeh!

Pixelgarten: Layouts in Space

Young German design studio Pixelgarten is experimenting with spatial graphic design inspired by comic aesthetics — as you see on the cover of the superb Tactile: High Touch Visuals for Laforet’s Grand Bazar Summer 2008 campaign in Harajuku. WOW! For that, Catrin Altenbrandt and Adrian Nießler were happy to spend a week in Tokyo to put up an installation. PingMag enjoyed a chat with the duo. ZONK!

Darth Vader masks compose a dark symphony

This project called “Last Manoeuvres in the Dark” by artists Fabien Giraud and Raphael Siboni currently on display in Paris at the Palais de Tokyo, employs hundreds of Darth Vader masks equipped with microcontrollers and speakers and connected to a computer which spatially composes one of the “darkest” musical pieces of all time. This video illustrates the performance pretty well.

After wowing audiences at the Tate Modern in 2004 with his epic installation, The Weather Project, Danish artist Olafur Eliasson has turned his attention to New York, where he continues his interest in natural phenomena in this series of four enormous waterfalls that he has created across the city.

Riesenhühner’n da hood

Nicolas Lampert und Micaela O’Herlihy haben ein Riesenhühnchen gemacht und am Strand und auf dem Parkplatz vor’m Supermarkt um die Ecke ausgestellt. Wie man das Ding in den Ofen bekommt und ob das Teil für eine komplette Supermarkt-Belegschaft reicht, weiß ich allerdings nicht.

Nicolas Lampert and Micaela O’Herlihy created a ten-foot rotisserie chicken out of polystyrene foam, hard coated, and then painted with latex paint and final coat of high gloss varnish.
In October, 2006 „Attention Chicken!“ made a number of unannounced public interventions throughout Milwaukee at Bradford Beach, the woods, Walmart, National Ave, and other locations throughout the city. Reactions ranged from laughter to attacks directed at the chicken (three in one day!)

Spooky 360°-Camera-Art

Das hat was: Michael Naimark stellt eine Kamera auf einen Plattenspieler in der Mitte eines Raums und filmt ein paar Szenen. Dann sprüht er den kompletten Raum weiß an, platziert an Stelle der Kamera einen Projektor und wirft die gefilmten Szenen auf den nun als Leinwand funktionierenden Raum. Spooky, irgendwie.

Neulich am Briefkasten…

…da dachte ich mir einfach so bei mir: “Jungs, wollt ihr mich vielleicht verarschen?”…
