Vanity Fair’s Hitchcock Shots Compared To The Originals

I’m such a big Hitchcock fan I was giddy with excitement when I saw that Vanity Fair magazine opted to recreate some of his most famous and iconic scenes from 11 of his movies in their Hollywood Portfolio issue a few months ago. The March issue of the magazine, who has a tradition of doing some fabulous photo editorials, continued to impress with their recreation of 11 of Hitcock’s most famous scenes in which 21 hottest hollywood actors are shot by four regular Vanity Fair photographers. The results are fabulous, and you can see them for yourself below followed by original hollywood stills of the movies.

Alfred Hitchcock on How the Introduction of Sound Hurt Cinema

The silent pictures were the purest form of cinema; the only thing they lacked was the sound of people talking and the noises. But this slight imperfection did not warrant the major changs that sound brought in. In Many of the films now being made, there is very little cinema. They are mostly what I call ‘photographs of people talking.’ When we tell a story in cinema, we should resort to dialogue only when it’s impossible to do otherwise. I always try first to tell a story in the cinematic way, through a succession of shots and bits of film in between… To me, one of the cardinal sins for a scriptwriter, when he runs into some difficulty, is to say ‘We can cover that by a line of dialogue.’ Dialogue should simply be a sound among sounds, just something that comes out of the mouths of people whose eyes tell the story in visual terms.

OK Go’s LED Jackets
Rising star of modern design, Moritz Waldemeyer, is collaborating with the quirky kings of Geek Rock, OK Go, to fashion a new kind of stage performance. The band recently approached Waldemeyer to design the costumes for their latest performance, and his solution quite literally lights up the stage – thousands of LED lights, stitched into the jackets of the four performers, will turn each of them into a moving light show. Waldemeyer’s inspiration was the flickering lights of the slot machines in the casinos of Las Vegas.

Logo R.I.P.
In todays ruthless business environment, corporations face uncertain futures. The forces of globalisation are creating unprecedented change. Yet apart from the displacement, downsizing and elimination of the workforce, the other casualities are the visual manifestations of the company: its logo, or trademark. Logo RIP is a commemoration of logos withdrawn from the ocular landscape.

Stelar C Muscle Mashine
The Muscle Machine is a six-legged walking robot, five metres in diameter. It is a hybrid human-machine system, pneumatically powered using fluidic muscle actuators. The rubber muscles contract when inflated, and extend when exhausted. This results in a more flexible and compliant mechanism, using a more reliable and robust engineering design.

User Experience Of The Future
We’ve got used to a number of things. To traditional mouse-keyboard user interaction, to 2D windows-based user interface and to a rather unspectacular user’s workflow which enables one user interact with only one application at a time. For instance, while you’re browsing in your web browser you can’t scale your text and resize your window simultaneously — unless you are a keyboard-shortcut-master.
Good news: it can be different. Below we present some of the outstanding recent developments in the field of user experience design. Most techniques may seem very futuristic, but they are reality. And in fact, they are extremely impressive. Keep in mind: they can become ubiquitous over the next years.

Star Craft: The Story so far

punkprof.jpgAsk the Punk Professor – Vivien Goldman’s bi-weekly column on the BBC America website
I am the Professor of Punk, and not only because I teach a course, Classic Punk & Beyond, at the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Back in the day, as Features Editor of the scrappy punk-rock weekly, Sounds, I was there to track punk’s frenetic development. Pistols, Clash and Pretenders, DJ Don Letts, Dennis Brown and various Wailers all partied at my place in London’s Ladbroke Grove, and on transatlantic trips, I dropped in on the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie and Patti Smith.
This is what I learned in my Punk life class. You have to start doing what you believe in some time, so why not now? And play each gig, teach each class, write each blog, like it was your first – and last. That’s punk. (via)

US labels to Canada: stop giving us free money, we prefer to sue
The Canadian Recording Industry Association (which represents multinational, US, and other non-Canadian record labels exclusively) has come out against the “private copying levy,” a tax on blank media that it lobbied hard for over the past 15 years. The levy is charged against blank media, and the money raised is paid to copyright holders in exchange for the right to copy music and other works onto the media. CRIA apparently fears that the levy can be used to legalize P2P music-trading in Canada (an activity whose legality is in dispute right now), thereby breaking the P2P deadlock, decriminalizing millions of music fans, and paying millions of dollars to their members. The record industry giants would prefer to go on suing music fans and technology companies — an activity that pays the record companies handsomely, while encouraging fans to defect from buying music in the future, and which does not pay one cent to any artist.

From the left-hand menu of this site you have access to a wide range of the facilities that have already been established. This applies among other things to the writer’s creative efforts in the form of papercuts, drawings, picture books and folding screens to be found under the link Visual Arts. And it applies to a great deal of the original Manuscripts, our collection of Portraits of Andersen and of persons related to him. We have also developed facilities that aim to convey knowledge about the writer’s life and work, see for example the links Anderseniana and Journeys.

orchid.jpgOrchid Houses
Our inspiration for Orchid House comes from the wildlife and landscape at Lower Mill Estate. A number of Orchid species can be found here, but it is the camouflage of the Bee Orchid that specifically generated our design.
The house will blend with its landscape and environment. The organic form is created from laminated veneer lumbar (LVL) ribs and clad with timber shingles (tiles). The camouflage pattern is burnt to the timber.
Orchid House can be located on any lakeshore site, with the main living spaces floating over the water. Terraces, gangway and pontoon cascade from the heart of the house as that of the orchid petals.

Mutterwertschätzung is the new Autobahn
