Space Invaders Futurama Game – A game of a cartoon of a game
In der Futurama-Folge „Anthology of Interest II“ bekämpfen Fry fiese Space Invaders. Game-Designer Shinobi bastelt grade aus dieser Szene einen tatsächlichen Space Invader-Clon. Oben ein Gameplay-Video, Snip von Gameswatch:
If you’ve seen Futurama’s “Anthology of Interest II” episode, specifically its Raiders of the Lost Arcade segment, you’ll remember Fry and friends jumping into a mobile air artillery platform to fight off a swarm of raiding Nintendians in a very Space Invaders-esque scene.
Game designer Shinobi is recreating that scene as an actual PC game (a game of a cartoon of a game!) right down to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” soundtrack. He has even added video clips from the episode that pop in during gameplay, sort of like those scripted parts in StarFox, when Peppy Hare would plead with you to do a barrel roll.
Popplers & Slurm: Zwei Rezepte auf Futurama-Basis
Jason Henninger von Tor.com erfindet Rezepte, die auf Science-Fiction basieren. Bislang kamen dabei Rezepte nach den Serien Farscape und Babylon 5 bei raus, beides Serien, die ich nicht wirklich auf dem Schirm habe. Heute aber widmet er sich Futurama und erfindet ein Rezept für Slurm, dem suchtgefährdendem Drink aus dem Sekret der außerirdischen Schneckenkönigin, und eins für die Popplers, die wie Hackfleischbällchen aussehen, tatsächlich aber Aliens von Omicron Persei 8 sind.
When I thought of making Futurama food, two choices stuck out in my mind: Popplers and Slurm. Slurm is a highly addictive soda made of the secretions of a giant alien slug queen. In re-creating Slurm, I had to marry the two concepts of Mountain Dew (which Slurm is pretty obviously based on) and royal Slurm Queen slug-jelly.
My first attempt was a mix of soda and lime Jell-O, which my daughter loved but I thought tasted like bubbly Pine-Sol. The second method was much better. Pineapple soda is really only recognizable as pineapple when it’s yellow. When green, it might as well be from another planet. Though I don’t usually like to use food coloring (I think it’s cheating), I felt it was necessary here.
Slurm
One 2-liter bottle of pineapple-flavored soda (room temperature)
1/2 teaspoon unflavored gelatin
A few drops of blue food coloringPour a cup of soda into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Take it off the heat and stir in the gelatin until totally dissolved. Add in one cup of room temperature soda and mix it well. Allow it to cool about ten minutes. Put the bottle of soda in the sink, as it will foam up when you add the gelatin liquid. Using a funnel, pour the mixture back into the bottle. When the frothing subsides, add the food coloring, just a couple drops until the soda is light green. Re-cap and refrigerate a couple hours. The result is a green, sweet, strangely thickened, lightly carbonated beverage.
I recommend mixing equal parts Slurm and vodka to make a Slurmtini. Garnish with a slivered gummi worm.

IPod/IPhone Ads Promote Both Apple and Artists
Apple ads are just… different. When a band licenses a song for use in, say, a Mitsubishi commercial, fans accuse them of selling out, but when the song ends up in an Apple ad, the opposite can be true.
Established artists don’t seem to lose credibility by licensing songs to Apple. And for unsigned artists, it can be the quickest way to be discovered by millions. Chalk it up to the cultural ubiquity of the iPod, Apple’s “halo” effect, the production values of the ads, or something else, but for whatever reason, having your song featured in an Apple ad is almost always a good thing.

The Original Futurama
In the pilot of the animated comedy Futurama, the protagonist awakens from a millennium of cryogenic slumber to find himself in the year 3000. The first thing he hears is a portentous, booming voice: “Welcome…to the world of tomorrow!” The speaker is soon revealed to be a lab technician with a flair for the melodramatic. The scene riffs on a 70-year-old fair ride, a vision of the future that’s been so influential it’ll probably seem familiar even if you’ve never heard of it.
The direct reference is to the 1939-1940 New York World’s Fair, whose tagline was a promise to show visitors “the world of tomorrow.” The most memorable exhibit at the fair was the General Motors Pavilion, and the most memorable feature in the General Motors Pavilion was a ride called the Futurama. People stood in line for hours to ride it and experience the exciting possibilities of life in the distant future —the year 1960.

Will Burtin: Forgotten Master of Design
In the early 1990s, when I first saw Burtin’s 14-page “The American Bazaar” feature (above), created for Fortune magazine in 1947, it struck me as a masterpiece, possibly one of the greatest sequences of its kind ever committed to paper, something so accomplished, extraordinary for its time and memorable that any designer could enjoy it and learn from it. Everything I heard about Burtin convinced me that he was a figure as significant in the history of 20th century graphic design as the handful of heroes we tend to obsess over – Paul Rand, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Wim Crouwel (still alive, of course) – and in some respects even more interesting.
