Wie sähe der Planet Erde mit den Ringen des Saturn aus? Und viel interessanter: Wie sähe die Gegend hier unten mit den Ringen des Saturn aus? Die Ringe würden sich theoretisch am Äquator formatieren und die Winkel wurden für die Bilder der Städte genau berechnet. Und genau wie Martin frage ich mich: Welche Folgen hätten diese Ringe in einem alternativen Universum – und wenn die Theorie der Paralleluniversen stimmt, gibt es da draußen tausende Erden mit Saturnringen! – auf Mythenbildung, Religion und Weltanschauung ausgewirkt?

Wahrscheinlich hätten wir dann statt einem angry old Man, living in the sky, einen Ringmaster. Einen Herrn der Ringe, sozusagen. Und Engelchen würden auf den Ringen Rollschuh-Disco tanzen. Wetten?

Hier eine halbstündige Doku über Peter Russels Weiterentwicklung der Gaia-Theorie (Wikipedia), nach der die Erde ein einziger Superorganismus ist. Er geht davon aus, dass die Vernetzung der Menschen der nächste Schritt der Evolution darstellt. Klingt alles ein bisschen nach Eso-Kitsch, ist aber tatsächlich ziemlich interessant. Der vorliegende Film basiert auf Peter Russells viel gerühmten Buch “Die erwachende Erde”; das in den USA unter dem Titel “The Global Brain” (in England “The Awakening Earth”) erschien. Peter Russell zeichnet in diesem Film ein inspirierendes und optimistisches Bild von der Zukunft der Menschheit. Dieses Bild basiert auf der Vorstellung einer mitreissenden dynamischen Entwicklung, die die Menschen aufs Neue mit ihrer Intuition und den tieferen Bereichen ihres Bewusstseins zusammenbringt.

“The Global Brain” geht von der These aus, dass die Erde ein einziger sich selbst regulierender Organismus ist. Die Rolle des Menschen definiert sich so aus seiner Funktion innerhalb des planetarischen Systems. Die Menschheit befindet sich an der Schwelle eines immensen evolutionsgeschichtlichen Sprungs, der gleichbedeutend ist mit der Entstehung des Lebens überhaupt. Es wird deutlich, dass spirituelles Wachstum nichts anderes ist als die Kraft der Evolution auf ihrem Entwicklungsgang durch das menschliche Gehirn. Russell stellt fest, dass wir allein durch die Erforschung unseres Selbst zu jenen Kräften vordringen können, die in der Lage sind, uns durch die verschiedenen Weltkrisen unserer Gegenwart hindurch in ein neues Zeitalter der menschlichen Entwicklung zu führen

Earth-like Planets May Be Common

European researchers said on Monday they discovered a batch of three “super-Earths” orbiting a nearby star, and two other solar systems with small planets as well. They said their findings, presented at a conference in France, suggest that Earth-like planets may be very common.

Saturn’s Titan: A Mirror Image of Earth Before Life Evolved?

The Cassini spacecraft observations of Saturn’s largest moon, the orange-colored Titan, have given scientists a glimpse of what Earth might have been like before life evolved. They now believe Titan possesses many parallels to Earth, including lakes, rivers, channels, dunes, rain, snow, clouds, mountains and possibly volcanoes.

“Titan is just covered in carbon-bearing material — it’s a giant factory of organic chemicals,” according to Ralph Lorenz of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. “We are carbon-based life, and understanding how far along the chain of complexity towards life that chemistry can go in an environment like Titan will be important in understanding the origins of life throughout the universe.”

Renommierte US-Klimaforscher sind nach einem Studium von Daten der Klimageschichte des Planeten zu der Ansicht gelangt, dass das Klimasystem empfindlicher als bisher gedacht ist. Die Menschheit könnte sich bereits gefährlich nah an einem Punkt finden, an dem der Masseverlust der arktischen und antarktischen Gletscher zu einem unumkehrbaren Prozess und ihr vollständiges Verschwinden nicht mehr aufzuhalten sein wird.

Moving the Earth

According to an article in the NYTimes, the Earth faces an unknown future because it will move further out in orbit as the Sun expends its mass and the gravitational forces become weaker.

One solution is to lasso comets and asteroids, swinging them near the Earth and using their slight gravity to boost the Earth to a higher orbit, where it could escape the Sun’s expansion. Because, y’know, what could go wrong with that?
