Severin schreibt mir: „Deine Filesharingblogeinträge sowie Argumente habe ich immer gerne gelesen, obwohl ich weiß Gott nicht immer deiner Meinung war. Nun machen die Fiery Furnaces einmal eine – wie ich finde – wirklich gelungene Gegenaktion: ‘Since bands can no longer sell ausio, Fiery Furnaces decline to provide it.’ Die Furnaces sagen also: Wenn ihr nicht zahlen wollt dann müsst ihr schon selber Musik Spielen. Ich wäre wirklich gespannt wie du diese Protestaktion siehst.“

Die Fiery Furnaces bringen ihr nächstes Album als sogenanntes „Silent Album“ heraus, ohne aufgenommene Songs und auch gar nicht erst mit einer leeren CD oder einer blanken Vinylplatte, sondern als DIY-Anleitung zum Selbstmusizieren mit Noten und jeder Menge illustrierten Tutorials. Obendrein wollen sie „Fan-Band“-Happenings stattfinden lassen, auf denen die Fans die Tracks des Albums selbst live vortragen.

Ich denke, das ist eine superclevere Idee und hochkreativ dazu. Die Furnaces bringen damit Fans zusammen und spielen mit dem Medium Musik und ganz nebenbei ist eine nicht aufgenommene Platte quasi der beste Kopierschutz, den man sich vorstellen kann (wenn man sowas haben will).

Wenn die Rechnung aufgeht, kreieren sie eine Serie einzigartiger Events und bestätigen mit ihrer Aktion praktisch umgesetzt meine These, dass digitale Files ökonomisch wertlos weil unendlich reproduzierbar sind; ihr Content aber hat einen emotionalen Wert, den man mit nicht-kopierbaren Events (oder eben der Superspecialedition oder den limitierten Shirts oder den spontanen Konzerten im Park [aber nicht in Braunschweig! scnr] oder you name it) monetarisieren kann. Anders gesagt: The singer, not the song.

Diese grandiose Idee hier wird vielleicht (oder vielleicht auch nicht) nur für die Furnaces funktionieren und wenn sie nicht funktionert, dann eine andere. Sie ist auf jeden Fall ein wunderbar spielerischer und sehr schöner Weg, sich einen Ausweg aus dem Schlamassel der untergehenden klassischen Geschäftsmodelle zu suchen.

Because file-sharing, or downloading, or whatever, has notoriously, or supposedly, made the production of the conventional ‘with-audio’ record obsolete, the Fiery Furnaces will release a Silent Record.

The Fiery Furnaces’ next album will consist of instruction, conventional music notation, graphic music notation, reports and illustrations of previous hypothetical performances, reports and illustrations of hypothetical performances previous to the formation of their hypotheses, guidelines for the fabrication of semi-automatic machine rock, memoranda to the nonexistent Central Committee of the Fiery-Furnaces-in-Exile concerning the non-creation of situations, Relevant to Progressive Rock Division, conceptual constellations on a so-to-speak black cloth firmament, and other items that have nothing to do with the price of eggs, or milk, or whatever the proverbial expression ceased to be. Upon release of the record, the band will organize a series of Fan-Band concerts, in which groups of perfectly ordinary Fiery Furnaces’ fans will perform, interpret, contradict, ignore, and so on, the compositions that make up Silent Record. Write to thefieryfurnacesemail@gmail.com to nominate your post office break room, truck stop parking lot, municipal arts center, local tavern, or what-its-name to host one of these ‘happenings’. By ‘happenings’ I mean, what will be in the future, perfectly normal rock shows. And propose yourself for Fan Band participation.
