The Selby, das weltbeste Blog über Einrichtung und sowas, bringt im März 2010 das erste Buch zum Blog raus. Todd Selby besucht jetzt schon seit 3 Jahren (glaube ich) Künstler, Kreative und Irre in ihren Wohnungen, meistens in und um New York, und fotografiert diese in ihrem Zuhause. Und das ist allermeistens superschön anzusehen und hochinteressant. Meine Ausgabe habe ich grade vorbestellt, you should, too.

“The Selby Is in Your Place” was conceived when Todd Selby began taking portraits of dynamic and creative people – authors, musicians, artists, designers and other cultural tastemakers – in their home environments and posting them on his blog. Nosy by nature, he was interested in seeing how someone’s personal style is reflected in their private spaces. Lucky for us, he found his answer in the colour-rich, eclectic and varied spaces he visited while photographing a diverse group of subjects in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney and London.

Some of his subjects are famous and some are not. Some are rich, others aren’t. Some are photographed in their apartments or houses, while others are shown in their studios or offices. What they have in common are unique spaces bursting with energy and personality that together create a colourful hodgepodge of inspirational interiors. Each profile is accompanied by Selby’s watercolour portraits of the subjects and their illustrated questionnaires, which reveal their answers to questions about homes, possessions and personal style. This book consists of over thirty profiles: half of which are favourites from his web site, the other half are never-before-seen shoots selected exclusively for the book.

Vor einer Weile bloggte ich einen Artikel über Kreativität und Wahnsinn, hier quasi der Nachfolger dazu beim Newscientist: Kreativität liegt in einer ganz bestimmten Genmutation begründet, die auch für Schizophrenie verantwortlich ist.

We’re all familiar with the stereotype of the tortured artist. Salvador Dali’s various disorders and Sylvia Plath’s depression spring to mind. Now new research seems to show why: a genetic mutation linked to psychosis and schizophrenia also influences creativity.

The finding could help to explain why mutations that increase a person’s risk of developing mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar syndrome have been preserved, even preferred, during human evolution, says Szabolcs Kéri, a researcher at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, who carried out the study.

Kéri examined a gene involved in brain development called neuregulin 1, which previous studies have linked to a slightly increased risk of schizophrenia. Moreover, a single DNA letter mutation that affects how much of the neuregulin 1 protein is made in the brain has been linked to psychosis, poor memory and sensitivity to criticism.

About 50 per cent of healthy Europeans have one copy of this mutation, while 15 per cent possess two copies.

To determine how these variations affect creativity, Kéri genotyped 200 adults who responded to adverts seeking creative and accomplished volunteers. He also gave the volunteers two tests of creative thinking, and devised an objective score of their creative achievements, such as filing a patent or writing a book.

People with two copies of the neuregulin 1 mutation – about 12 per cent of the study participants – tended to score notably higher on these measures of creativity, compared with other volunteers with one or no copy of the mutation. Those with one copy were also judged to be more creative, on average, than volunteers without the mutation. All told, the mutation explained between 3 and 8 per cent of the differences in creativity, Kéri says.

Der Independent hat einen ziemlich interessanten Artikel darüber, dass eine Spur Wahnsinn unabdingbar für Kreativität ist. Für Leute, die kreativ arbeiten ist das mit Sicherheit nix neues, dieses leicht irre Flackern in den Augen, manchmal. Jetzt aber auch wissenschaftlich und evolutionsbiologisch begründet, yay! Die Studien beschreiben zum Beispiel, dass künstlerisch begabte Menschen zu Schizophrenie tendieren, wärend Mathematiker etwa eher dem Autismus zuneigen. Und ich frage mich jetzt, was das für mich heisst. Meine besten Fächer waren Kunst und Mathe, also bin ich ein leicht schizophrener Light-Autist. Auch nett.

A study at the University of Newcastle found significant differences between artistically creative people and mathematicians. While the artists showed schizotypy traits, mathematicians did not, and that fits in with the idea that mathematics and engineering, which require attention to detail, are closer to the autistic traits than to psychosis.

“Affective disorder perpetuates creativity limited to the normal,” says Glazer, “while the schizoid person is predisposed to a sense of detachment from the world, free from social boundaries and able to consider alternative frameworks, producing creativity within the revolutionary sphere. Newton and Einstein’s schizotypal orientation, for instance, enabled their revolutionary stamp in the sciences.”

The stereotypical images of mad scientists working alone and preferring foaming beakers to friends, abound in literature, and reflect a popular perception of the aloof, detached and obsessive genius. But the idea goes back even further. 2000 years ago in Rome, the philosopher Seneca was obviously already on the case when he wrote: “There is no great genius without a tincture of madness.”

Im Gehirn eines Hochbegabten

Telepolis hat einen hochinteressanten Artikel über Daniel Tammet, einem autistischen Inselbegabten, der dank 8 Geschwister Kommunikation lernen musste und der 22.000 Kommastellen von Pi aus dem Gedächtnis aufsagen kann. Der hat nun ein Buch geschrieben, in dem er aus seiner Welt berichtet und er sieht Zahlen… und sie haben Stimmungen. Diese Absätze hier haben mir grade das Gehirn verknotet:

“Ich habe abstrakte Informationen – beispielsweise Zahlen – immer in visueller, dynamischer Weise gedacht”, berichtete Tammet dem Wissenschaftsmagazin [extern] Scientific American. Zahlen und Wörter sind für den Briten nicht einfach dürre schwarze Zahlengerippe und Buchstabenfolgen, sondern sie haben eigene Formen und Farben, sogar eigene Persönlichkeiten, wandeln sich, sind lebendig. “Zahlen sind meine Freunde… Jede ist einzigartig und hat ihre ganz eigene ‘Persönlichkeit’. Elf ist freundlich und Fünf ist laut, während Vier still und schüchtern ist…”, führte Tammet in seiner Autobiografie aus. Wenn er zähle, bildeten die Zahlen Bilder und Muster vor seinem inneren Auge.

Der Direktor des Centre for the Mind an der Universität von Syndey [Allan Snyder] geht davon aus, dass Savant-Fähigkeiten in allen Menschen angelegt sind und die meisten sie nur niemals erschließen. Wie auch andere Wissenschaftler nimmt Snyder an, dass die Extrembegabten einen besseren Zugang zu ungefilterten Daten in ihrem Gehirn haben. Den Grund dafür sieht er in einer Besonderheit der Gehirnfunktionen: Snyder vermutet, dass in den Gehirnen der Savants bestimmte höhere kortikale Funktionen quasi ausgeschaltet sind, die normalerweise dafür sorgen, dass Zusammenhänge hergestellt und Details darüber vernachlässigt werden.

Snyder sieht sich in seiner These durch Versuche am lebenden Objekt bestätigt: Der Forscher schaltete bei Freiwilligen mittels magnetischer Impulse vorübergehend bestimmte Areale des Gehirns aus. Das Ergebnis der Versuche war Synder zufolge, dass alle Versuchspersonen nach der Behandlung genauer zeichneten oder schwierige Kalkulationen besser durchführen konnten als zuvor.

Ich bin mir da nicht mehr so sicher wie die Adbusters, mir fehlt aber grade die Zeit, um den Gedanken auszuformulieren, nur schnell: früher habe ich regelmäßig gegen die Business-Kasper gewettert und mir erscheint es nicht besonders schlüssig, die jungen, hippen Leute mit diesen in einen Topf zu werfen. Na klar, sie haben alle tierisch viele Projekte am laufen, die allesamt nach zwei Monaten nur noch dahinsiechen. So fucking what? Mir ist kreativer Try and Error tausendmal lieber als konservatives „Lieber mal abwarten und was mit Substanz machen“. Substanz ergibt sich nämlich nicht aus dem Abwarten, sondern aus dem Versuch und dem Glück, der zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort einfach da ist. Und dabei ist es ziemlich wurscht, ob man zu enge Jeans und bedruckte Shirts und zu große Sonnenbrillen trägt. As long as you create.

DIY-Art Doku: Beautiful Losers

„Beautiful Losers“ ist eine wundervolle Doku über Streetart und DIY-Künstler, viele der interviewten Designer hatte ich schon hier auf Nerdcore. We were pretty stupid… and great. You know: awesomely dumb. Wunderbar! Wann und ob dieser Film überhaupt in Deutschland irgendwo zu sehen sein wird, weiß ich nicht. Aber ich weiß, wo ich demnächst suchen muss.

In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

Nachdem man dieses Video gesehen hat, weiß man endlich, wo diese verdammte Kreativität herkommt. Die wird in biologischem Anbau auf einer Farm aus insgesamt 250 Kreativen gewonnen, die man am Südhang in frischer Luft mit genug Sonne langsam reifen lässt und dann zu wunderbarem Kreativ-Nektar verarbeitet.

Can You Become a Creature of New Habits?

HABITS are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. “Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd,” William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word “habit” carries a negative connotation.

So it seems antithetical to talk about habits in the same context as creativity and innovation. But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel synaptic paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks.

Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habits. In fact, the more new things we try — the more we step outside our comfort zone — the more inherently creative we become, both in the workplace and in our personal lives.

The Crow @ TED-Talks

Als ich gestern diesen Vortrag über Krähen von Joshua Klein im TED-Blog gesehen habe, habe ich noch gedacht: „Ach, naja… Krähen. Die seh ich selbst jeden Tag.“ Als das Ding dann eben nochmal bei BoingBoing aufgetaucht ist, habe ich’s mir mal angesehen und POW! Bei 3:42min ist mir eben dermaßen derbe die Kinnlade auf den Boden gefallen… ich wusste ja, dass Krähen schlau sind. Aber dass sie so intelligent sind und selbständig Draht verbiegen, um Futter in einem Behälter zu erreichen, wusste ich nicht. Auch nicht, dass sie bei grün über die Straße gehen. Kein Scheiß.

Ich hätte ja auch nicht gedacht, dass ich sowas nochmal zu sehen kriege: ein offensichtlich ziemlich bekiffter Hippie-Kermit erklärt einem spießigen Griesgram das Konzept der mentalen Visualisierung anhand von Flower-Power und Chicks. Ganz im Ernst! Dass ich den Satz: „Or maybe [you think] of some beautiful, young chick“ mal aus Kermits Froschmund hören würde… Those were the Sixties!

„Somewhere over the Rainbow“ auf Speed

Telepolis hat ein sehr interessantes Interview mit Hans-Christian Dany über Speed und die Rolle von Amphetamin in der leistungsorientierten Gesellschaft und spinnt dabei den Bogen von den Nazis, über Judy Garland, Jack Kerouac, Andy Warhol bis zu Punk und Techno.

Auch die junge Schauspielerin Judy Garland funktionierte.

Hans-Christian Dany: Garland sang 1938 in den USA 16-jährig unter starkem Amphetamin-Einfluss “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. Bei Garland ging es dem Werksarzt der Filmfabrik darum, den Körper der pubertierenden Darstellerin auf die Figur der 10-jährigen Dorothy in “Wizard of Oz” herunter zu hungern. In der damaligen Faszination für die technologischen Möglichkeiten von Drogen schien die Medizin kein Problem bei der Behandlung von Kindern zu haben.

Kann das klappen, kreative Schübe durch Speed?

Hans-Christian Dany: Für die moderne Kunst spielt das Kreative nur eine nachgeordnete Rolle. Warhol oder andere Kunstbewegungen der sechziger Jahre, wie auch vieles, was in den Zusammenhängen von Punk oder Techno entstand, das sind kulturelle Bewegungen, die ohne Speed kaum vorstellbar wären und sich bewusst antikreativ verstanden. Da ging es darum, Energien zu bündeln, sich reinzusteigern, Gedanken extrem zu fokussieren und rückhaltlos auf den Punkt zu zusteuern. Die Ausgangsidee kann dabei ganz banal sein, man muss es halt nur mit der Letztgültigkeit isolieren und behaupten. Das braucht es Zeit, in der man einfach wach sein muss. Häufig ist es weniger der Einfall die Leistung, sondern deren Behauptung. Warhol, dem selten was einfiel, ließ sich Ideen von anderen flüstern und hat sie dann auf die Spitze getrieben.

Gibt es einen Zusammenhang zwischen seiner repetitiven Kunst und Amphetamin?

Hans-Christian Dany: Auf Amphetamin zeigt sich bei vielen Benutzern das Phänomen des “punding”. Das ist die Faszination für Monotonie und Wiederholung. Deshalb entstanden unter Einfluss von Speed vielleicht soviele wunderbare Bild für die fordistische Revolution, deren Grundgedanke – die Wiederholung des immer gleichen Handgriffs am Fließband – sich durch den Gebrauch einer Droge übersteigert.

Da fehlt mir nur noch der Mythos von Bret Easton Ellis, der seinen „American Psycho“ in nur zwei Wochen eingeschlossen in einem Hotelzimmer auf Speed verfasst haben soll. Definitiv sehr interessantes Interview.

In the mid-1980s, producer James L. Brooks was hired to develop a comedy series called “The Tracey Ullman Show” for the fledgling Fox TV network. Ullman was immensely popular in England … but Brooks wasn’t sure her humor would play well in the United States. He figured that inserting short cartoon segments between her comedy sketches might help keep the show interesting to American audiences.

SZ: Die sieben Kreativregeln – “Ausflippen ist harte Arbeit”
1. Komme nie mit einer Idee.
Ganz gleich, ob du ein Buch schreiben willst, ein Möbelstück entwerfen oder einen Zeichentrickfilm machen: Am Anfang sollte nicht eine Idee stehen – es sollten drei sein.
Der Grund ist einfach. Wenn ein Regisseur zu mir kommt, und einen Vorschlag für ein neues Projekt macht, dann hat er in der Regel sehr lange über diese eine Idee gebrütet. Das schränkt ihn ein. Meine Antwort lautet stets: “Komm’ wieder, wenn du drei Ideen hast, und ich meine nicht eine gute und zwei schlechte. Ich will drei richtig gute Ideen, zwischen denen du dich beim besten Willen nicht entscheiden kannst. Du musst alle drei vor mir verteidigen können. Wir entscheiden dann, welche du machst.”
Das Problem bei Kreativen ist oft, dass sie sich zu sehr auf eine Idee fokussieren. Gerade am Anfang führt das zu einer unnötigen Verengung. Jeder Kreative sollte das ausprobieren. Man wird überrascht sein, wie diese Vorgabe einen plötzlich zwingt, über Dinge nachzudenken, an die man vorher gar nicht gedacht hat. Man gewinnt Abstand, sieht plötzlich viel mehr. Und glaube mir, es gibt immer drei gute Ideen. Mindestens.

Why we curse. What the F***?
Fucking became the subject of congressional debate in 2003, after NBC broadcast the Golden Globe Awards. Bono, lead singer of the mega-band U2, was accepting a prize on behalf of the group and in his euphoria exclaimed, “This is really, really, fucking brilliant” on the air. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which is charged with monitoring the nation’s airwaves for indecency, decided somewhat surprisingly not to sanction the network for failing to bleep out the word. Explaining its decision, the FCC noted that its guidelines define “indecency” as “material that describes or depicts sexual or excretory organs or activities” and Bono had used fucking as “an adjective or expletive to emphasize an exclamation.”

Will we ever send humans to Mars?
In the summer of 1969, two weeks after Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon, rocket scientist Wernher von Braun delivered to Nasa a detailed, fully costed plan for landing humans on Mars.
Dr von Braun, who had masterminded America’s lunar programme, intended to send astronauts on an initial excursion to the Red Planet lasting two years, with a fly-by of Venus on the journey home.
The mission was to reach Mars by 1982 and would be accomplished using a nuclear-powered rocket. This would be parked in Earth orbit and used to ferry 800-tonne spaceships to Mars and back.

Batmans Klo

Ich habe eben Batmans Profil in aufgeweichtem Toilettenpapier im Klo gesehen. Und da ich ganz dringend musste, habe ich ihm kurzerhand auf die Spitzohren gepullert.

Sowas ist ja so ein bißchen das Kreuz der Kreativen und Verrückten. Wir können Sachen in Mustern sehen, etwa den Silver Surfer auf marmorierten Badezimmerkacheln oder Werwölfe in der Rinde der Bäume oder Drachenköpfe in stinknormalem Blattwerk eines Busches am Wegesrand. Normalsterbliche können das auch, die gucken dann und wann in den Himmel und freuen sich, wenn eine Wolke da oben entlangfliegt, die aussieht wie Snoopy. Leider muss ich diesen Menschen dann immer sagen: “Mensch, die SIEHT ja auch aus wie Snoopy! Und jetzt schaff dasselbe mal mit einer Wolke, die wie eine verkackte Wolke aussieht!”

Die Leute halten mich dann immer für einen arroganten Kreativschnösel, aber die Leute wissen auch nicht, wie hart es ist, Batman an die Spitzohren zu pissen. Ein Glück für Bruce Wayne: ich musste nicht kacken.

meinte eine Frau zu Garbos Tabletten und Alkoholsucht, dass das ganz furchtbar und unverständlich sei, dass sich eine so intelligente Person, gerade wenn Sie soviele Möglichkeiten habe und aber sowas von intelligent, da sei das doch ganz übel: sich das mit Alkohol und Tabletten zunichte zu machen.

Die Frau hat keine Ahnung von Intelligenz oder Kunst, hab ich da gedacht und umgeschaltet.
