The Beatles Complete On A Ukulele #60: Love you to

Über das fantastische Projekt The Beatles Complete On A Ukulele habe ich jetzt schon ein Jahr lang nicht mehr gebloggt: Roger und Dave wollen zusammen mit Gastmusikern alle 185 Beatles-Songs bis zur Abschlußfeier der Olympischen Spiele 2012 in London covern und da sind bislang nicht weniger als 60 Cover-Versionen zusammengekommen. Jede einzelne davon kommt mit Background-Story zum Song und überhaupt: Super!

B) Write essays to coincide with each release.

Weezer on an Ukulele

Youtube User WeezerUke plant tatsächlich, das komplette blaue Album von Weezer auf einer Ukulele zu covern, um danach mit Pinkerton weiterzumachen. Das Vorhaben erinnert mich sehr an The Beatles Complete On A Ukulele: Die wollen den kompletten Katalog der Beatles bis zu den Olympischen Spielen 2012 in London covern, sind dabei zwar mittlerweile etwas weggekommen von den reinen Ukulele-Coverversionen, aber trotzdem: toll.

Hier das neueste Video aus dem offiziellen Muppets-Youtube-Channel. Darin covern sie Queens „Bohemian Rhapsody“ und das ist genau so über-fantastisch, wie man sich das vorstellt. Unbedingt bis zum Ende gucken. Und überhaupt: OMG! ZOMG! Die Muppets covern „Bohemian Rhapsody“! Holy Fuck!

Folk-Cover von Punk-Klassikern

Coverlaydown hat eine Compilation aus Punk-Klassikern in Folk-Coverversionen gepostet. Ich mag ja diese Banjo-Version von „Lust for Life“ am liebsten, dicht gefolgt von dieser Folk-Version von „I wanna be sedated“. Und erinnert mich natürlich mal wieder an Hard’n'Phirms „Rodeohead“, das Bluegrass-Medley von Radiohead-Klassikern.

Ich wusste, dass Captain Kirk damals ein Cover von „Lucy in the sky with diamonds“ der Beatles aufgenommen hatte. Ich wusste allerdings nicht, dass vor ein paar Jahren ein Fan dazu ein psychedelisches Video produziert hatte. Und es ist voller Farben!

Talking Heads-Cover mit American Psycho-Video

Das Talking Heads-Cover „This must be the place“ von Miles Fisher ist nicht ganz so furchtbar, wie ich zunächst befürchtete, aber es ist seine ziemlich gute Kopie von Patrick Bateman aka American Psycho, die so hervorragend zum Song passt, die mich überzeugt. Das Buch müsste man auch mal wieder lesen.

Ich bin ein großer Genesis Fan. Seit der Veröffentlichung ihres Albums von 1980 Duke. Davor habe ich ihre Musik nicht richtig verstanden, zu künstlerisch, zu intellektuell. Erst auf Duke wo Phil Collins’ Anwesenheit spürbarer wurde. Ich finde Invisible Touch ist das unangefochtene Meisterwerk dieser Gruppe. Es ist eine epische Meditation über das Nichtgreifbare. Gleichzeitig vertieft und bereichert es die Bedeutung der vorhergehenden Alben. Hört euch das brilliante Zusammenspiel von Banks, Collins und Rutherford an. Man kann praktisch jede nur aus von jedem Instrument hören. Was das Reime schreiben der Songs betrifft, markiert dieses Album ein neuen Höhepunkt der Professionalität. Nehmt den Text von Land of Confusion. In diesem Lied spricht Phil Collins das Problem des politischen Machtmissbrauchs an. In Too Deep ist der bewegenste Popsong der 80er Jahre, über Monogamie und Bildung. Der Song ist äußerst aufbauend. Die Texte sind so positiv. So bejahend, wie kaum etwas anderes in der Rockmusik.
Phil Collins Solo-Karriere scheint kommerzieller und eher befriedigender zu sein und das auf einer vereinfachten Weise. Speziell Songs, wie In Air Tonight und Against all Odds, aber ich denke auch, dass Phil Collins innerhalb der Gruppe besser arbeitet, als Solokünstler und ich betone das Wort Künstler.

Am Mittwoch hat NiN auf einem ihrer Gigs ihrer Abschiedstournee niemand geringeres als Gary Numan auf die Bühne geholt und sie haben zusammen nichts geringeres als „Cars“ (und „Metal“, hier eine Wackelcam-Version) gespielt, einem der besten Tracks der 80s, enorm einflußreich auf alles, was danach an elektronischer Musik kam. Snip von Quietus:

Vor ein paar Wochen bloggte Nilz in seiner großartigen Gastwoche hier ein Video, in dem Weezer live MGMT und LadyGaga coverten. Das Ding wurde ein kleinerer Internet-Hit und jetzt hat Rivers Cuomo und seine Gang dem Cover ein eigenes Video spendiert, in dem er auch nicht viel besser aussieht, als im Original-Clip.

Falls jemand die großartigen Nouvelle Vague nicht kennt: schämt Euch! Nouvelle Vague spielen New Wave- und Punk-Klassiker in Bossa Nova-Coverversionen und das machen sie ziemlich fantastisch.

Zur Promo für ihr wunderbares neues Album „3“ (das grade im Hintergrund läuft, für 8 Euro bei Amazon mit drei Klicks gekauft, I’m lovin’ it – ja: gekauft, ja: ich, doch: ehrlich!), das in den USA erst im September erscheint, bei uns aber schon zu haben ist, waren sie beim Sender WFMU zu Gast und haben dort ein paar wahnsinnig tolle Cover live gespielt, so toll, dass ich gar nicht entscheiden wollte, was ich davon hier reinklebe: Sex Pistols, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads oder die Violent Femmes im Bossa Nova-Style? Am liebsten alle.

Am Ende sind’s dann die Violent Femmes mit ihrem Überstück „Blister in the sun“ geworden, die Live-Version oben ist übrigens noch besser als die Album-Version, die grade lief. Hier noch als Bonustrack das Talking Heads-Cover von „Road to nowhere“.

Auf ihrer Website gibt’s in der Film-Sektion noch Ace of Spades, Final Countdown und Love In An Elevator, ihr Album kostet nur 10 Euro und hat noch Bon Jovis „Living on a prayer“. Ich bin sowas von Fan.

Hier spielen ein Atari 800XL, Texas Instruments TI-99/4a, eine Floppy, eine Festplatte und ein Scanner Queens „Bohemian Rhapsody“. Die kommen dabei zwar manchmal ein wenig aus dem Rythmus und das Hardwareschrott-Cover von Radioheads „Nude“ bleibt unerreicht, macht aber nix, trotzdem toll.

Beatles on a Ukulele: Kids singen „Yellow Submarine“

Über das Projekt „The Beatles complete on a Ukulele“ habe ich schon vor einer Weile gebloggt, der neue Track „Yellow Submarine“ ist allerdings ein ziemlicher Hammer, deshalb nochmal: Roger und Dave wollen alle 185 Beatles-Songs bis zur Abschlußfeier der Olympischen Spiele 2012 in London covern. Zu „Yellow Submarine“ haben sie aufgeschrieben, warum die Fab Four für die Ewigkeit sind:

The Beatles are the entry-level drug to happiness. Happiness is a hard habit to get into. Suffering has quite a constituency. I say fuck Buddha, fuck prayer, fuck meditation, put on a Beatles song and keep calm and carry on. So much of what adults say to children is punishment, “No, stop, be quiet, you’re bad, you pooped your pants,”

But the Beatles never say that. They make cartoons about submarines. They stand for love and non-conformity. They do not obey. They believe that the most intelligent social unit is the individual, or in their case, four individuals closely cooperating. They are not big on cops or armies. The villains in the Yellow Submarine movie are of course “Blue Meanies.”

Die Ukulele ist eigentlich ein tolles Instrument, wäre sie hierzuland nicht durch einen unerträglichen TV-Moderator in Verruf gebracht worden, so dass man folgendes eigentlich gar nicht verlinken möchte. Aber ich muss, denn das, was Roger und Dave da machen, ist zu toll zum ignorieren: Sie spielen den kompletten Katalog der Beatles auf einer Ukulele (und die Cover sind tatsächlich besser, als sich dieser Satz grade anhört).

Normalerweise lasse ich das ja mit den Doppelpostings von Spreeblick, aber das hier ist so dermaßen over the top awesome, das muss auch hier stehen: Meine Lieblingsrentnerband The Zimmers (vorher auf Spreeblick: Album der Rock-Rentner The Zimmers, People try to put us d-d-down) haben Prodigys „Firestarter“ gecovert und dazu ein irres Video mit tollen Frisuren gedreht. Alvin and the Chipmunk Punk

Ihr müsst jetzt ganz stark sein: Alvin und die Chipmunks singen Cover-Versionen populärer Pop-Songs und weit und breit kein Punk in Sicht. Die Eltern der Kids, bei denen diese Viecher damals angesagt waren und die mit Gebrüll dazu gezwungen wurden, dieses Album zu kaufen, haben garantiert die Hölle durchgemacht. Deshalb wurde die Anti-Babypille erfunden.

iSo the Robot gewinnt Aimee Mann Cover-Wettbewerb

Aimee Mann hatte auf Youtube zu einem Cover-Wettbewerb aufgerufen, gewonnen hat den iSo the Robot und seine Vocoder-Version von „Freeway“. Der tritt demnächst zusammen mit Aimee auf einem ihrer Gigs auf und die Kombination Robots, Vocoder und Aimee Mann, die hat was. Irgendwie.

Mary Shelley Overdrive – “Hideous Sexy”

Hideous Sexy is yet another pointless covers album from Mary Shelley Overdrive — available for FREE download. The EP is a collection of cover songs recorded during practice sessions, rehearsals, etc. during the recording of our (as yet untitled) LP.

Included on the album are covers of songs by Blue Oyster Cult, Antiseen, Black Flag, Devo, Bo Diddley, The White Stripes and The Vaselines, as well as an interpretation of the ’60s Batman theme. No money should change hands for this album. Feel free to post it on your blog or share it however you choose.

Hardwareschrott spielt Funkytown

Das hier ist mit Sicherheit nicht so brillant wie das Radiohead-Cover gespielt von alten Rechnern und Festplatten, aber wenn ein C64, olle Drucker und Harddrives „Funkytown“ spielen, dann muss ich ja, auch wenn das Ergebnis mehr als einmal aus dem Tackt kommt und auch sonst nicht so klasse ist, wie das Original.

This is a shamless ripoff of James Houston’s remix of Radiohead’s Nude but I decided to try it for Funkytown by Lipps Inc. I choose Funkytown and only used computers from the early 1980’s that were destined for the Junk Yard. This is how I got the idea for Junkytown. I also used a modem but DTMF tones are lousy for musical notes (no harmonics) but I was very lucky to find two notes that did sound good. On your phone punch in 3 3 2 3 and you got the beginning part of the solo and the rest is history. Please note no synthesizer or audio effects were used and all the audio was recorded from either a microphone or direct line.

Some of the audio was amplified when it was mixed down because the levels were too low ie. the printer and modem. The Commodore 64 was used for the main Bass and Guitar. The Ti-99/4A was used for the second part of the solo because of the limitation of DTMF tones. It was tempting to just sample the modem but I did not in order to keep it 100% original. Finally it was difficult to video tape the printer because it kept shaking the table so I looped the printer video in the begining of the video. The printer sometimes caused the harddrive head to shake out of sync so I inserted a screw into the mechinism and this some what helped.

Jay-Z covert Oasis „Wonderwall“ beim Glastonbury-Festival

Ich hab’s ja bekanntermaßen nicht so mit Hip Hop. Dennoch gibt es schon ein paar Nummern, die finde ich richtig gut, und Jay-Zs „99 Problems“ ist eine davon. Noel Gallagher fand es allerdings trotzdem doof, dass mit Jay-Z ein Hip Hopper der Headliner des diesjährigen Glastonbury Festivals und meinte:

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” he said. “If you start to break it then people aren’t going to go. I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

“Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.” (NME)

Wenn ich mir dann allerdings obiges Video anschaue, in dem er erst „Wonderwall“ covert (und ganz nebenbei beweisst, dass er wirklich besser sprechen als singen kann), nur um danach seine 99 Probleme mit AC/DC zu mashen, dann muss sogar ich zugeben: okaaaaaay, kann man machen. Aber nur ausnahmsweise.
