Batman vs Darth Vader

Diese Illu von Dave Dorman erscheint erstmal wie ein nettes Mashup-Bild, aber da der Mann tatsächlich Comic-Zeichner ist und haufenweise fantastischer Cover für sowohl Star Wars und Batman gezeichnet hat und Anfang des Jahres Gerüchte bezüglich Crossover-Comics von Dark Horse (Star Wars) und Lucas Arts aufkamen, könnte das der erste Vorbote von, tatsächlich, einer DC Universe vs Star Wars-Comicreihe sein.

Hätte, könnte, sollte… jedenfalls finde ich das Artwork nicht auf Dormans Seite und ich habe keine Ahnung, wie jung oder alt das Teil ist. Jedenfalls werde ich beim Gedanken an DC/StarWars-Comics schon ziemlich feucht im Schritt.

The Return of Bruce Wayne: Bat-Pilgrim, Bat-Pirate, Bat-Cowboy

Die Zeichnung zum ersten Cover von „The Return of Bruce Wayne“, in dem Batman durch die Zeit reisen wird, hatte ich bereits hier: Batman vs Cavemen. Damit konnte ich mich ja noch anfreunden.

Mit dem Piraten-Batman habe ich schon eher Probleme, das geht aber auch noch grade so. Aber ein Cowboy-Batman? Ein Bat-Pilgrim? Ich habe mir die Serie ja bereits abonniert, das allerdings eher aus den gleichen Sammelgründen, aus denen ich mir auch das Comic über Obamas Hund mitgenommen habe. Ehrlich: Ich befürchte Schlimmes, könnte mich aber auch sehr täuschen und dieses äußerst obskure Setting wird im Zusammenspiel mit der grundlegenden Ernsthaftigkeit der Batman-Comics völlig super. Wir werden sehen.

Neulich hatte ich noch gebloggt, dass Batman (also: Bruce Wayne) im Frühjahr wieder zurückkehren wird, in den Comics durch die Zeit reisen und dort als Neandertaler, Cowboy und Piratenbatman seinen Baterang durch die Gegend schmeißen wird. Genau das macht er jetzt auch schon, auf Twitter, und einen T-Rex hat er auch schon erlegt:

Nachdem ziemlich enttäuschenden Batman R.I.P., an dessen Ende (Achtung, Spoiler!) Bruce Wayne tot war, dann doch nicht und schließlich wie Ash am Ende von Evil Dead 2 irgendwo verschollen in der Zeit ist. Und es ist ja sowieso furchtbar klar, dass der echte Batman nicht einfach verschollen bleibt, sondern irgendwie, irgendwann zurückkehren wird.

Jetzt hat Grant Morrisson verraten, wie Batman zurückkehrt: Er reist durch die Zeit und bekämpft historische Fieslinge und verkleidet sich als Cowboy, Pirat und Neandertaler und sowas. Klingt irgendwie… interessant.

Q: It’s my understanding that Return will follow Bruce Wayne through different eras as he makes his way — presumably — back to the modern day. Any hints on which eras we might see Bruce exploring in his quest to find his proper place in time?

A: The first episode is set in the Late-Paleolithic Era, the second is in Pilgrim-era Gotham Village, and we also get to see Gotham in Western or noir style.

Each of the stories is a twist on a different “pulp hero” genre — so there’s the caveman story, the witchhunter/Puritan adventurer thing, the pirate Batman, the cowboy, the P.I. — as a nod toward those mad old 1950s comics with Caveman Batman and Viking Batman adventures. It’s Bruce Wayne’s ultimate challenge — Batman vs. history itself!

I’ve tried to thoroughly research each time period so that the stories work not only as at least fairly plausible reconstructions of life in the real 17th or 19th centuries but also as romanticized “pulp” versions too, while at the same time referencing the more extravagant history of the fictional DC Comics Universe in the background.

Batman, Superman, Flash, Spidey und Darth Vader in WWII

Der indonesische Künstler Agan Harahap fügt gerne Superhelden und Darth Vader in historische Fotos aus dem zweiten Weltkrieg ein. Bisher hat er nur fünf Collagen, das ist also insgesamt noch sehr ausbaufähig. Oben Superman bei der Überwachung der Bergung geretteter Kunstwerke aus dem Schloß Neuschwanstein und Batman beim Motivieren von Englischen Paratroopern. Die anderen drei Artworks mit Spidey, Anakin und Flash gibt’s in Harahaps Galerie auf Deviant Art.

4-eyed Joker-Illu on a Skateboard

Vor Jahren schon habe ich festgestellt (und hier im Blog irgendwo gepostet, ist lange her, für Linksucherei bin ich zu faul grade), dass gephotoshopte Menschen mit vier Augen selbige tränen lassen, so ein bisschen zumindest.

Jedenfalls: Dark Vomit hat eine Galerie voller Illus, die auf einen ausgeprägten Mehr-Augen-Fetisch schließen lassen. Immerhin gibts bei ihm oder ihr Vincent Price, Alfred Hitchcock und andere mit vier beziehungsweise sechs Augen. Und ein letztes Abendmahl mit Clowns inklusive aller Joker. Den besten Joker in seiner Gallerie, nämlich obigen Vieräuger aus der Batman-Serie, hat er dann auch gleich auf ein Skateboard gedruckt, das er in seinem oder ihren Etsy Shop verhökert.

Flexidiscs waren dünne Vinylscheibchen in den 70ern und 80ern, die meistens irgendwelchen Magazinen beigelegt waren, ab und zu stolpert man auch heute noch über die Dinger. Pink Tentacle hat eine schöne Coversammlung mit jeder Menge Godzillas und japanischen Batman-Flexidiscs.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Japan saw an explosion in the popularity of sonosheets — cheap, flexible phonograph records printed on thin sheets of vinyl. Widely available from a variety of publishers, the most popular sonosheets featured theme music from TV anime, manga and tokusatsu, and they often came packaged inside booklets featuring colorful artwork. The sonosheet boom was short-lived, though — many companies went under as the market became flooded in the 1970s, and the phenomenon all but disappeared by the 1980s. Here is a small sample of the vast array of sonosheet cover art from that era.

Alyas Batman en Robin’s Bizarre Ending

Hier der Abspann des philippinischen Films „Alyas Batman en Robin“, in dem Batman und Robin mit Baseball-Caps „At The Hop“ singen, während der Joker und der Pinguin dazu tanzen. Am Schluß kommt dann noch ein zwergenwüchsiger Spiderman und ein Ballett aus Superhelden von Superman bis Wonder Woman. Ein Kommentar auf IMDB:

“Alyas Batman en Robin” is an unauthorized, Phillipino, Batman musical with cheesy results and “Batman and Robin”-esque tedium. Well, with that recipe it must be so bad that its good right?

Den Herrn Lunch Bag Art, der seinen Kinden Irma, Dana und Dylan jeden Tag die Tüte, in denen sie ihre Brote mit in die Schule nahmen, bemalt, hatte ich schonmal im November letzten Jahres (Vorher auf Nerdcore: Lunch Bag Art). Seit dem hat sich einiges getan. Unicorns! Vader teaching Batman! Holy!

Who would win? Batman or Vader? The rules:

1. Each combatant knows about the other’s abilities

2. The arena is an abandoned shopping mall. Neither combatant is aware of the other’s location when the fight starts.

3. The battle ends when one combatant is unable to fight. Running away is a defeat.

As badass as Batman is, I think Vader wins this one on account of the light saber. When Batman takes people down, it’s usually in hand to hand combat, and, well, we all know what Vader does to people’s hands/arms.

The light saber defeats Batman’s armor and superior strength. The filtration system in his mask defeats any possible gas attack.

The only way Batman wins is if he is able to get the drop on Vader, which is Batman’s specialty, and seemingly pretty possible in your scenario.

So, head to head combat, Vader wins on account of the light saber. Batman wins if he can jump Vader early and gain control of the light saber.

EDIT: Totally forgot about Vader’s command of the Force. I think that would likely enable him to sense the Bat coming, and Force-choke the crap out of him.

Batman auf die Schippe nehmen

Mit dem Konzept des gealterten und verbitterten Bruce Wayne/Batman feierte Frank Miller dank “The Dark Knight Returns” große Erfolge – aber die Was-Wäre-Wenn Frage hatten sich Nick Cardy und P.J. O´Rourke schon 1974 gestellt, als sie Parodie “Bat-Fart” auf die Welt losliessen. Das Comic erschien im National Lampoon´s, hier kann man sich einige Panels anschauen.

Ach, und übrigens finde ich Creebobbys´aktuellen Strip “Batfail” ganz, ganz groß. Unbedingt anschauen!

Chip Kidd ist Musiker, Grafik-Designer und Herausgeber der Batmanga-Anthologie, die ich hier schonmal vorgestellt habe und die mittlerweile auch bei mir im Regal steht. Wired hat ein Interview mit ihm über den Entstehungsprozess des Buchs und ein Video, in dem Chip Kidd seine unglaubliche Wohnung mit noch unglaublicheren Sammlerstücken vorstellt, eine Butze voller vintage Batman-Blechtoys, hach!

Wired.com: Speaking of major material, you’re a collector. Tell us about your killer apartment. What are some of your prized possessions?

Kidd: God, that’s a loaded question! I’d have to say that the things that mean the most to me are the examples of original comic art that I’m able to look at every day, most of them either by notable friends and/or for projects that I’ve worked on.

Wired.com: Any thoughts on the blockbuster commodification of Batman these days? Has that franchise been turned around, or does it not matter?

Kidd: The Batman film franchise has obviously been turned around, quite capably, and it certainly does matter, at least to Warner Bros.! I do think they’ve found themselves painted into a corner, both by their own ambition and tragic circumstance. But I join the rest of global geekdom in eagerly awaiting to see how they’re going to top The Dark Knight.

Wired.com: Are you similarly geeking over the Watchmen film?

Kidd: I think the Watchmen film will be great. But by all accounts, if you’re familiar with the book there won’t be many surprises, other than seeing your favorite scenes brought to life.

Wie großartig ist das denn bitte? Ein reicher Geschäftsmann, der schon immer anonym für wohltätige Zwecke gespendet hat und nicht Bruce Wayne heisst, hat sich ein Batmankostüm angezogen und Nahrungsmittel an Obdachlose und Spielzeug an Kids verteilt. Santa Claus is Batman, actually! Grandios! Das Video läuft bei mir aus irgendeinem Grund nicht, aber die Bilder zur Story reichen mir schon. Holy F*ck! It’s the Batman! Und er verteilt Geschenke! USA Today hat ein Preview auf das Batman-Comic #681, dem letzten Teil der „Batman R.I.P.“-Reihe, in dem Bruce Wayne tatsächlich den Fledermaus-Anzug an den Nagel hängt.

Just as The Dark Knight closes in on $1 billion worldwide gross, DC Comics is ready to have Bruce Wayne “die” — or at least give up the cape — in his monthly comic.

Batman #681, due Nov. 26, wraps up writer Grant Morrison’s Batman R.I.P. story line, in which the crimefighter is so shaken by a secret from his past that a new Batman must be found.

Batman ohne Bruce Wayne? Ein neuer Batman? Ohne den psychologischen Hintergrund? Ohne die Rachestory? Am Ende wird noch Robin der neue Batman und ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob das gutgehen wird, ganz davon abgesehen, dass ich ohnehin keine Heftserien mehr lese (bis auf Walking Dead, weil dessen Zeichner so dermaßen faul geworden ist, dass die Sammelbände nur noch alle Schaltjahre mal erscheinen).

Von Umzügen und Bruce Wayne

Gestern hab ich zwei Jungs verarscht. Ich hatte mir grade das wundervolle Buch „Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan“ (und die MAD-Ausgabe mit diesem Alfred E. Neumann-Poster) und blätterte darin rum, als eine Mami mit ihren zwei Söhnen ins Büro kam. „Ins Büro“ klingt an dieser Stelle vielleicht merkwürdig, aber man muss wissen: ich bin hier nicht zum Spaß in Berlin, ich bin hier zum arbeiten!

Jedenfalls kamen da zwei Jungs ins Büro, so acht oder zehn Jahre alt, die fanden Batman natürlich super und als ich ihnen erzählte, dass ich Bruce Wayne kenne, wollten sie mir nicht glauben. Aber dann sagte ich, sie sollten doch meinen Papa fragen, der kenne den nämlich auch und seit diesem Moment bin ich für die zwei der Typ, der Batman kennt. Wow!

Leider war Batman heute nicht da, sonst hätte er mal mit anpacken können beim Umzug, bei dem ich heute geholfen habe. Ein Umzug in den fünften Stock. Ohne Aufzug. Mit drei Millionen Büchern und Zeugs und Kartons und Lampen und Sofas und Schränken und noch mehr Zeugs. Das sind dann die Momente, da merkt man: Du bist keine 20 mehr, René. Und: die Betrinkerei nach dem Kurzfilmfestivalpreisverleihungsdingsbums war keine gute Idee. Ich habe ja keine Ahnung, wie Batman das macht in seinem Alter, aber dafür habe ich während der Schlepperei an einem Baby geschnuppert, das wie ein Pfirsich aussah. Roch gut, genauso wie Babies eben so riechen, nur besser.

Und nachdem ich mich jetzt auf der Couch meines Vertrauens lang gemacht habe, noch ein wenig verschnaufen und ein langes Bad nehmen werde, stehen heute abend gleich zwei Konzerte und eine Party auf dem Programm. Kaum ist man mal in Berlin, schon rappelts im Karton voller Sozialstress. Und morgen fall’ ich in mein ein Bett und stehe für 24 Stunden nicht mehr auf.

Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan

Gestern erschienen: Ein Sammelband mit der Geschichte von Batman in japanischen Mangas in den 60ern, die während der Ausstrahlung der alten Serie mit Adam West aufgelegt wurden. Eayz schreibt: „Die ins Englische übersetzte Manga-Kollektion gibt es als Taschenbuch für umgerechnet rund 28 Euro und als Hardcover für 51 Euro. Must-Have! Ob sich aber für einen 32-seitigen Manga mehr und zwei Buchdeckel ein solcher Aufpreis lohnt, darf zumindest bezweifelt werden.“ BoingBoing hat ein Review und ein paar Bilder aus dem Buch.

In 1966, manga prodigy Jiro Kuwata was commissioned to do a regular Japanese manga version of Bob Kane’s Batman comics, to tie in with the Japanese launch of the Batman TV show. Kuwata quickly decided that Kane’s scripts wouldn’t play to a Japanese audience, so he remade the Dark Knight for the expectations of a mid-sixties, manga-familiarized audience. The result was stunning: a weird blend of genius suspense and gonzo weirdness, as villains turn into dinosaurs, commit strange crimes, rise from the dead, and rampage through a mangified Gotham City that has the streamlined wonderfulness of space-age Japanese pop culture.

These comics were lost for decades, but they have resurfaced now, recovered from private collections and reprinted in Bat-Manga, a new anthology from Pantheon edited by Chip Kidd. Kidd has supplemented the material with fantastic photo spreads (by Geoff Spear) of collectible Japanese Batman toys from the era. The reproductions themselves are only minimally cleaned up, leaving intact the yellowing paper, the wildly variable print-quality, the strange nostalgic quirks of printing from that era.
