David Livingston macht sowas wie eine absurde Mischung aus Performance-Kunst und Installation und latscht durch New York – mit einem knapp 2 Meter großen, pinken Penis aus Stoff. Jetzt ist er mit seinem Kustwerk in ein Museum gelaufen und wurde rausgeschmissen. Arme Wurst.

I’m from punk rock, hip hop, early skateboarders, mixed with 80’s b-boyism. I grew up in Los Angeles, drinking Budwiser under age and singing punk rock in back yard pool parties. Later I found myself in San Fran, drinking red wine with Doze Green, during the return of the DJ revolution. Now I’m a working class artist living in Brooklyn and father of three being a good husband.

Dieses Schach-Set aus Harz inklusive eingeschlossener Insekten heisst „Amorphous Organic“, kommt von alastair mackie und ist eins von sieben Exponaten auf einer „The Art of Chess“-Ausstellung während der Möbelmesse Milan, was mich jetzt nicht so wirklich besonders interessieren würde, aber hey: Mit Insekten kriegt man mich halt immer. (Danke Hell-G!)

Petrischalen-Kunst

Klari Reis malt Bakterienbilder auf Petrischalen, oder so ähnlich. Auf ihrer Website gibt’s Bilder ihrer Installationen, auf The Daily Dish hat sie jeden Tag des Jahres 2009 ein High Res-Foto einer der Dinger gepostet… Bio-Artworks, immer wieder gut und komplett Wallpaper-tauglich.

Brilliantly colored life forms dance across the wall in these detail images of an installation project composed of a series of hand painted plexiglass petri dishes. Artist Klari Reis uses reflective epoxy polymer to depict microscopic images. The effect is hopeful, almost playful, belying the serious nature of the subject matter.

Supported by steel rods, the paintings sit at varying degrees of distance from the wall, evoking depth and motion. Working with biotech companies in San Francisco, Klari uses organic cellular imagery and natural reactionship with today’s biotechnological industry.

The Life and Times of Ron English

Juxtapoz hat einen zweiteiligen, ziemlich interessanten Artikel über Ron English (der sich mittlerweile auch endlich mal ‘ne vernünftige Website inklusive Blog angeschafft hat), einem der berühmtesten Vertreter des Culture Jamming (Wikipedia).

The first groups to twist advertising were the French Situationists, best known for the work of Guy DeBord, and the Punk and Pop movements. But when English emerged in the 1980s with a pioneering way of warping advertisements, he beat companies and their marketing at their own game.

Cultural jamming, as it’s known twists icons and imagery as if wringing out a soaked rag, a reverse psychology where the same mercantile methods subvert rather than reinforce their messages. English has hit Coca-Cola, Camel cigarettes, McDonalds, Apple computers and the Christian south, which he toured as Jesus wanting to edit the Bible. “I stumped them,” he said, “an old Jesus trick.”

Zombies in Love-Artshow

Die Galerie zur Ausstellung „Zombies in Love“ habe ich jetzt schon seit ein paar Tagen im Feedreader geflagged und wollte warten, bis sie die Exponate auch online zeigen. Haben sie jetzt getan und die Dinger sind oft leider nicht so gut, wie ich sie mir gewünscht hätte, schade.

Meine Favoriten sind obigen Zombie Amor von Tony Lombardo , Mindy Lees Tuschearbeiten (1, 2) und William Stouts Mona Zombie, Happy Easter (Zombie-Jesus inklusive Osterhase) und sein Buck Zombie.

Neutrino Observatorium als Kunst-Installation

Bilder des japanischen Neutrino Observatoriums Super-Kamiokande (Super K) sind so alt wie das Internet und die hat jeder schonmal gesehen (falls nicht: hier). Das Super-K besteht „aus einem Tank, der mit 50.000 Tonnen hochreinem Wasser gefüllt ist. In diesem Tank befinden sich 11.200 Photomultiplier, welche die Tscherenkow-Strahlung von freien Elektronen und Myonen registrieren, die durch Wechselwirkung der Neutrinos mit den Wassermolekülen entstehen. Die Anlage befindet sich etwa 1 km unter der Erdoberfläche, um die kosmische Strahlung abzuschirmen.“ (Wikipedia)

Und als wäre das nicht schon abgefahren genug, eat this: „The photomultiplier tubes register the amount of light created when a neutrino meets an electron of ultra-pure water. The encounter is marked by a real Sonic Boom, an explosion faster than the speed of the light. Genau das Ding hat die Künstlerin Nelly Ben Hayoun nun in London in einem unterirdischen Club unter der Tower Bridge nachgebaut. Das hier, liebe Kinder, ist komplett und unfassbar großartig.

With 50,000 tonnes of super pure water and a crew of expert navigators from Imperial College London and Queen Mary University of London, Super K Sonic Booooum is a mind-blowing installation demonstrating the visual equivalent of a massive sonic boom.

A remarkable fusion of water, light and science, the installation – developed by designer Nelly Ben Hayoun – is inspired by physicists at the Super-Kamiokande (Super K) neutrino observatory in Japan, a massive subterranean scientific instrument used – amongst other things – to discover traces of exploding stars out there in the universe.

Five Imperial College London physics researchers, and seven PhD students are currently working on the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment, which uses Super K. Of these, Professor Dave Wark , Dr Yoshi Uchida and Dr Matthew Malek will be appearing in the installation, guiding curious visitors through the world of particle physics in a rubber dinghy.

Artwork sells itself on Ebay

Caleb Larsen hat 2008 einen schwarzen Plastikwürfel mit Internet-Verbindung gebaut und einem Script, der das Teil seit dem auf Ebay verkauft, sobald das Ding einen neuen Käufer fand, wird automatisch eine neue Auktion gestartet, die aktuelle Auktion steht bei nicht weniger als $4259. Erinnert mich irgendwie an Google will eat itself, nur anders.

A Tool to Deceive and Slaughter, 2009, is a black, acrylic box that places itself for sale on eBay every seven days thanks to an internet connection, which, according to the artist’s conditions of sale, must be live at all times. Disconnections are only allowed during transportation, says the creator.

Larsen tells Wired.co.uk: “Inside the black box is a micro controller and an Ethernet adapter that contacts a script running on server ever 10 minutes. The server script checks to see if box currently has an active auction, and if it doesn’t, it creates a new auction for the work. The script is hosted on a server to allow for updates and upgrades if and when the eBay API (the interface used for 3rd party programs to talk to eBay) changes.”

The technology is designed specifically so that the buying and selling process could carry on ad infinitum, suggests Larsen, who adds that, if eBay “dries up and disappears, then another platform, either propriety or public, can be used for the selling.”

Van Gogh-Tasse mit Silikonohr-Henkel

Designer Mike Mak hat diese Tasse mit einem Ohr aus Silikon gestaltet, das Ohr ist flexibel und man kann es lang ziehen und verdrehen und solche Sachen. Außerdem heisst die Tasse „Dear Van Gogh – Handle this object carefully“ und basiert auf Vincent Van Goghs Ohrläppchenstory.

Die Arbeiten von Ron Mueck hatte ich schonmal gebloggt, aber das ist jetzt über 3 Jahre her, der Mann hat grade eine neue Ausstellung in Australien am Start und das Life Mag hat eine frische Fotogalerie, Grund genug also für ein paar Links zu seinen gigantischen, hyperrealistischen Skulpturen.

A sculpture titled “Mask II” is on display ahead of the opening of the new Ron Mueck exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. The exhibition features 12 hyper-realistic sculptures by Mueck — an Australian who works in Britain — from the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art, along with four new works.

We are starting the new year with the online premier of another Graffiti doc free to watch- Inside Outside – featuring Zevs, Os Gemeos Swoon, KR, Ron English, Earsnot, Pigmeus, Adams & Itso among others.“

Hört sich alles sehr exklusiv an, tatsächlich ist der Film von Andreas Johnsen und Nis Boye Møller Rasmussen aus Dänemark bereits 4 Jahre alt und schon lange online, was aber nix daran ändert, dass er toll ist.

“Inside Outside” follows ZEVS and other so-called street artists from New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen and São Paulo. They all make a living off their art, but they also have an urge to exhibit their work illegally in the streets. “Inside Outside” is a film about the energy artists get when working in the street. An energy they’re missing when exhibiting in galleries and museums, an energy that brings life to their art and to their own lives. It´s an energy that’s partly caused by the fact that everything these artists do in the street is illegal; “Anything that gives you security is eventually going to restrict you at some point”, says Swoon about the art galleries.

Der Mann ist einer der wichtigsten Writer überhaupt und war einer der ersten, der Streetart und Graffiti abstrahierte und mit alternativer Formsprache experimentierte und selbstredend gibt es keinen deutschen Wikipedia-Eintrag für ihn, hier der englische.

Quake 3 als automatischer Kunst-Generator

Michael schreibt mir: „Ich recherchiere gerade für einen kleinen Artikel über Videospiele als künstlerische Ausdrucksmittel und bin dabei u.a. über zwei kleine Geschichten gestolpert, die dir gefallen könnten: Kunst aus C64 Code [Die ich schon vor ein paar Jahren gepostet hatte] und Pics gemalt mit Quake 3“

ioq3aPaint began in 2002/3 with a project called q3aPaint, which sought to explore the possibilities of using a video game, in this case QuakeIII Arena, as an automatic painting system.

Exploiting a well known ‘redraw’ glitch in the game, and introducing a variety of modified software bots, action in the arena was transformed into a lush gestural field of painterly brush-strokes and impacting colour. Both painting and abstract graph of action, the results seeded research into a second iteration, ioq3aPaint, developed as part of an Artist in Residence at Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, Georgia.

Dave MacDowells Popkultur-Paintings hatte ich hier auch schon öfter (und dieses „hatte ich auch schon öfter“ lasse ich mir demnächst patentieren), der hat in der zwischenzeit aber einige neue Gemälde am Start, obiger „Hendrix in Wonderland“ ist sein neuestes, hier in groß auf Flickr.

Today, the Hendrix estate and Sony Music Entertainment will announce the March 9 release of a “new” Hendrix album, “Valleys of Neptune,” which will feature a dozen unreleased recordings.

The late star’s sister, Janie Hendrix, calls the material a “major revelation” about her brother’s musical directions at the time of his death, but the project and Sony’s intense interest in it also reveal plenty about the modern music marketplace — namely that proven stars of the past, even the dead ones, are growing more important to an industry facing an uncertain future.

Dude, there’s a 23 year old shark called „Untitled 1986“ in your roof.

Diese Hai/Haus/Skulptur-Kombination wurde 1986 aufgestellt und hat wahrscheinlich schon tausendmal im Netz die Runde gemacht, ich kannte sie bisher noch nicht. Jedenfalls hat da einer einen gigantischen Mega-Shark im Dach und ich will jetzt sofort mein Giant Octopus-Dach und zwar aus Solar-Zellen!

In Wahrheit ist das hier natürlich der Hai aus dieser Szene von „Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus“, in der er mal schnell aus dem Wasser hüpft und ein Flugzeug plattmacht. Danach ist er auf dem Weg nach unten durch ein Wurmloch gefallen und im Jahr 1986 auf dem Dach eines Herrn in Oxford gelandet. Klingt ziemlich plausibel, wenn man mich fragt.

This ordinary home (built as a semi-detached house in about 1860 but now attached by a link to a second house to the north) suddenly became the centre of world attention, and the headless shark still excites interest today.

Bill Heine commissioned the shark and still owns the house. An American who studied law at Balliol College, he was running two Oxford cinemas at the time, but since 1988 he has been better known as a Radio Oxford presenter. When pressed by journalists to provide a rationale for the shark, he suggested the following:

The shark was to express someone feeling totally impotent and ripping a hole in their roof out of a sense of impotence and anger and desperation…. It is saying something about CND, nuclear power, Chernobyl and Nagasaki.

The headless sculpture, with the label “Untitled 1986″ fixed to the gate to the house, was erected on the 41st anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Created by the sculptor John Buckley, it is made of fibreglass, weighs four hundredweight, and is 25 feet long.

The Lost Underground Art Show

Schöne Lost-themed Ausstellung in der Gallery1988, die mit ihrer Crazy4Cult-Reihe ja jedes Jahr Ausstellungen mit Artworks zu Filmen veranstalten und endlich auch hier mal ein Anlaß, um über Lost abzuledern, normalerweise mache ich das ja eher bei den Filmfreunden, in diesem Sinne: Die Serie Lost ist sowas von lost und alle denken immer, ich müsste das ja eigentlich gut finden, aber tatsächlich hat die ganze Serie nur eine gute Szene und das ist die mit der Flugzeugturbine in der ersten Folge. Der Rest ist lost Mumpitz vor exotischer Kulisse und interessiert mich aus irgendeinem Grund überhaupt nicht. Aber die Artworks sind schon sehr nett.

Im Sommer fand in New York die Ausstellung Black-Acid Co-op statt, in der unter anderem Drogenlabore nachgebaut und als Installationen gezeigt wurden. Snip von der NYTimes:

Deitch’s latest foray into the noncommercial is “Black Acid Co-op,” an immense, labor-intensive, maniacally contrived walk-through environment. A warren of some dozen rooms, interiors and passageways, it includes a burned-out home methamphetamine lab, a red-carpeted gallery of pseudo-artworks and a hippie haven.

All told, visitors snake their way through evocations of some of the darker sides of American life, especially its always evolving drug culture. In its own low-down, downtown, art-now way, this show approaches the impact of the museum-quality Piero Manzoni retrospective and the Picasso extravaganza, both orchestrated by the Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea this spring. If the art is not ultimately as memorable, its sampling of dysfunction is.

Ich nutze ja jede Gelegenheit um auf einen meiner Lieblingskünstler Josh Keyes hinzuweisen. Falls ihr den nicht kennt, unununbedingt hin- und die komplette Website durchklicken, zusammen mit James Jean wahrscheinlich der beste zeitgenössische Maler alive. Der Mann hat jedenfalls derzeit eine Ausstellung in der David B Smith-Gallery und den dortigen Katalog kann man ab heute auf ihrer Website kaufen, die 85$ sind bei der Ausstattung auch nicht wirklich zu teuer.

In dieser Uhr steht ein Mann und malt jede Minute einen neuen Minuten- und jede Stunde einen neuen Stundenzeiger. Nur, dass der Mann nicht wirklich in der Uhr steht, sondern diese ein abgefilmtes 24 Stunden-Video in einem Loop abspielt.

This clock does not actually have a man inside but a flatscreen that plays a 24 hour loop of this video by the artist watching his own clock somewhere and painstakingly erasing and re-writing each minute. This video was taken at Design Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009.
