Neue Helikopter-Bilder von 9/11

ABC hat vor einem Jahr einen „Freedom of Information Act request“ gestellt und in Zuge dessen wurden jetzt neue Bilder der Zusammenbrechenden Twin Towers veröffentlicht, geschossen von einem Polizeihelikopter aus. Ich finde den Anblick ja auch heute noch, fast zehn Jahre danach, völlig unwirklich und surreal.

The images were taken from a police helicopter — the only photographers allowed in the airspace near the skyscrapers on Sept. 11, 2001. They were obtained by ABC after it filed a Freedom of Information Act request last year with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the federal agency that investigated the collapse.

The chief curator of the planned Sept. 11 museum pronounced the pictures “a phenomenal body of work.”

The photos are “absolutely core to understanding the visual phenomena of what was happening,” said Jan Ramirez of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. They are “some of the most exceptional images in the world, I think, of this event.”

NYC was where I lived, worked, and loved when 9/11 happened. My small part in that morning was nothing out of the ordinary. There was some running, crying, coughing, trying to find out where friends and colleagues were, and the like. For the most part I’m fine, although occasionally something will spark a rush of feelings back from that day. For example, I was angry about the movie Cloverfield because of what I perceived to be intentional use of 9/11-style reporting and footage for the sake of adding excitement to an otherwise crappy horror movie, so I am capable of being offended by what I perceive as crass or insensitive when it comes to 9/11.

That said, I found these plushies to be very touching. I don’t know if I could fully articulate how they made me feel, but I think I saw them not as a trivialization of those events, but rather a distillation of the fear and sadness into something simpler and more child-like. And in that way they gave me comfort. They make me smile, albeit in a bittersweet way. Thanks for sharing them, Jenny Ryan.“

Michal Kosakowski hat die Ereignisse des 11. Septembers in Ausschnitten aus über 600 Filmen rekonstruiert und daraus einen Kurzfilm zusammengeschnitten (oben in zwei Teilen). Ich vertrete ja die gar nicht mal so steile These, dass dieser Realismus, der sich von Bond über Cloverfield bis Wolf Creek breit macht, direkt auf 9/11 zurückzuführen ist. Denn das, was wir damals alle gesehen haben, kannten wir: aus dem Kino. Da ist mit einer unglaublichen Wucht der Film, die Fiktion in die Realität hereingebrochen und in einer Gegenbewegung die Realität in den Film. Genau das will Kosakowski mit seinem 20minütigen Kurzfilm zeigen.

Almost all of us saw the events of September 11, 2001 (911) on television. We knew these images from our cinematic experiences and thus found it almost impossible to recognise them as events that actually occurred, and even more difficult to accept them as such in the moment we witnessed them. It was at this early point in time that Michal Kosakowski stepped in: minutes after the event he was sketching out a first draft for his project Just Like The Movies.
In more than 600 Hollywood movies (produced before 2001) Michal Kosakowski looks for images of what he just saw and finds, in 52 films, the entire sequence of events that happened on that day in September 2001. His reconstruction begins.

Two 1,350-foot buildings, planned for New York City’s World Trade Center, will top the Empire State Building by 100 feet, not counting its TV antenna. Each of the 110-story towers will have twice the office space of the Pan Am Building’s 2.4 million square feet, now the world’s most spacious.

The two towers, a plaza, and smaller buildings will occupy 16 acres in downtown Manhattan.

Construction will cost the Port of New York Authority $350 million. Minoru Yamasaki, who designed the Science Pavilion at the Seattle World’s Fair, and Emory Roth & Sons are the architects.

Es gibt manchmal so Sachen, da sitzt man danach erstmal fünf Minuten mit offenem Mund vor dem Monitor und glaubt nicht, was man da eben gesehen hat.
