Man nehme zwei C64-Soundchips und bastele sich daraus ein Dings. WTF?!
A quick demo of a keytar I built out of a Commodore 64. It uses two SID 6581 chips and was made using the Midibox Sid platform from www.ucapps.de.

Oben einer von 21 Typo-Kurzfilmen aus dem Lalelublabla-Projekt des 4ten Semesters Kommunikations-Design an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart. Eine 8-Bit-Version des Kinderlieds „Bi-Ba-Butzemann“ mit Pixelgodzillas, Supermarios und im Jungle-Remix. Nuff said.

Am 9. Oktober kommt anläßlich John Lennons Geburtstags das Beatles-8-Bit-Tributealbum “Wanna Hld Yr Handheld”. Jetzt haben sie 9 Tracks als Preview auf Myspace hochgeladen und die Beatles klingen in 8-Bit ziemlich anständig.

Die Emulator Punks haben drei Prodigy 8-Bit-Alben veröffentlicht, insgesamt 34 Tracks voller Prodigy-8Bit-Action. Und ich frage mich grade ernsthaft, ob die nicht besser als die Originale klingen.

Okay, was ist noch fantastischer, als ein Daft Punk 8-Bit-Album? Richtig: Ein Weezer 8-Bit-Album. Chiptunes ist damit komplett. You got your problems, I got my Hash Pipe.

The songs on this compilation have mostly been created using original videogame hardware running home-brew software, and vary radically in style, from minimal ‘one man and his Game Boy’ compositions to 8-bit inspired full band performances. Die Super Smashing Pumpkin Brothers, Billy Corgan und seine Band in der 8-Bit-Nintendo-Version. Wie unfassbar grandios ist das denn bitte? Kommt von El Macbee, der damals schon die Nintendo-Version von „Dark Knight“ gemacht hatte (die eher so achnaja war und die ich damals „nur“ in die Links gepackt hatte).
Ich liebe dieses 8-Bit-Cover von MGMTs „Kids“, fast schon besser als das Original. Wenn da jetzt noch einer die Vocals drüberlegen würde, wäre das der ultimative Remix.

3Sat zeigt heute um 16.30 Uhr die C64-Doku „The 8 Bit Philosophy“ über die 8-Bit-Musikszene mit Interviews mit Chris Hülsbeck, Allister Brimble, Reyn Ouwehand und Romeo Knight in einer gekürzten Fassung, der komplette Film wird ab September auf dem Bit Live-Festival zu sehen sein.
Der deutsche Filmemacher Konstantin Stuerz produziert gerade eine aktuelle Dokumentation über eben diese musikalische Subkultur – die der 8 Bit Musik. Die Dokumentation „The 8 Bit Philosophy – a Commodore 64 Symphony“ beleuchtet die damalige und aktuelle Szene der 8 Bit-Musiker aus ganz Europa. Der Film zeigt die Leute, die damals die original C64 Musikstücke beziehungsweise heute die Remixes erstellen. Konstantin Stuerz hat in ganz Europa gedreht, und spannende Gesprächspartner gefunden. In Interviews erfährt man viel über die Faszination der 8Bit-Musik. Wie sind die Stücke entstanden? Warum war ein Soundchip mit einem doch begrenzten Soundspektrum so populär, dass man ganze Symphonien dafür komponierte. Eigentlich sollte der Film erst im September auf einem 8Bit-Festival (BIT LIVE 2008) in einer Langfassung von 45 Minuten Premiere feiern sollte, wird für neues in einer 30 Mnuten-Version Premiere haben.
