Based on the work of French comic artist Guillaume Renard (aka Run), the hyperviolent sci-fi dystopia marks a unique collaboration between France’s Ankama (Wakfu, Dofus) and Japan’s Studio4°C (Batman: Gotham Knight, Animatrix, Tekkonkinkreet).
Run co-directed the film with Shoujirou Nishimi, the latter of whom also served as the film’s lead animator. Both Run and and Nishimi will attend Tuesday evening’s screening in Annecy.
Mutafukaz takes place in Dark Meat City (DMC), which Run has described as “a condensed exaggeration of Los Angeles’ varied strengths and weaknesses.” The story follows DMC resident Angelino, a deadbeat who starts experiencing violent headaches and monstrous hallucinations after a scooter accident.
In a director’s statement, Run described some of the film’s themes and influences:
Through this animated film, which resolutely focuses on action, I try to address deeper issues: the search for identity, each person’s place in society, friendship, and, of course, love. I played around with all the pre-conceived ideas conveyed by pop culture, with many nods to this American imagery that struck my French teenager imagination. From masked luchadores to Latino and African-American gangs (directly inspired from the war between Bloods and Crips that shook South Los Angeles in the ’90s), including Men in Black directly inspired by ufology myths. (Cartoon Brew)
In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.
SNATCHERS is a horror comedy about high schooler Sara, who wakes up pregnant…with an alien baby. Now she’ll have to team up with her ex-best friend Hayley to fight the extraterrestrial threat and save the world.
In 1982, during a dark and fictitious time in cycling history, the sport’s most venerable, time-honored race was marred by the doping of virtually all of its competitors. Riddled with nefarious characters, that year’s competition was a hornet’s nest of moral depravity. Through the perspective of five riders, Tour de Pharmacy gives an inside look into the grim realities of the darkest event in a sport notoriously tainted by controversy.
An ex-special services veteran (Antonio Banderas), down on his luck and desperate for work, takes a job as a security guard at a run-down mall in a rough area of town. On his first night on the job, he opens the doors up to a distraught and desperate young girl who has escaped and fled from a hijacking of the Police motorcade that was transporting her to testify as a trial witness in a briefcase. Hot on her heels is psychopathic hijacker (Ben Kingsley), alongside his resourceful henchmen, who will stop at nothing to extract and eliminate their witness.
A newly released prison gangster is forced by the leaders of his gang to orchestrate a major crime with a brutal rival gang on the streets of Southern California.
Beneath the waves, coral reefs are dying on a massive scale. These scientists and filmmakers are fighting to stop it.
Former heavyweight champ, Mike Tyson (Ip Man 3) and Aikido sensation Steven Seagal (Exit Wounds), have an appearance in China Salesman (aka Chinese Salesman), an action film written and directed by Tan Bing (aka Geng Weiguo).
After a catastrophe strikes Los Angeles, survivors face an even greater threat, thousands of giant killer bees, ushering in the end of the world!
