Mutafukaz

Based on the work of French comic artist Guillaume Renard (aka Run), the hyperviolent sci-fi dystopia marks a unique collaboration between France’s Ankama (Wakfu, Dofus) and Japan’s Studio4°C (Batman: Gotham Knight, Animatrix, Tekkonkinkreet).

Run co-directed the film with Shoujirou Nishimi, the latter of whom also served as the film’s lead animator. Both Run and and Nishimi will attend Tuesday evening’s screening in Annecy.

Mutafukaz takes place in Dark Meat City (DMC), which Run has described as “a condensed exaggeration of Los Angeles’ varied strengths and weaknesses.” The story follows DMC resident Angelino, a deadbeat who starts experiencing violent headaches and monstrous hallucinations after a scooter accident.

In a director’s statement, Run described some of the film’s themes and influences:

Through this animated film, which resolutely focuses on action, I try to address deeper issues: the search for identity, each person’s place in society, friendship, and, of course, love. I played around with all the pre-conceived ideas conveyed by pop culture, with many nods to this American imagery that struck my French teenager imagination. From masked luchadores to Latino and African-American gangs (directly inspired from the war between Bloods and Crips that shook South Los Angeles in the ’90s), including Men in Black directly inspired by ufology myths. Newsbits:

  • Ups ‘Fargo’ Future In Doubt, Says Showrunner Noah Hawley: Current Season Might Be Last
  • Not a spoiler: The Goat from ‘The Witch’ Appears in ‘It Comes at Night’!: „The A24 Cinematic Universe is (kind of) a thing. When Robert Eggers’ The Witch was released last year, a 210-pound billy goat named Charlie became its breakout star. […] It Comes at Night stars Riley Keough and Christopher Abbot revealed that a goat featured in their film is the very same goat that played Black Phillip in The Witch! Both films were released by distribution company A24, so the amusing connection makes total sense. “It was literally the same goat,” Abbot revealed to the outlet. 'He or she wasn’t as featured in our movie, but [it was the] same goat actor. It must just be A24’s goat. It’s in the mailing room, too. That’s a fun little fact. People are gonna freak out over that.'“
  • Eli Roth’s ‘Death Wish’ Remake [featuring Bruce Willis in the Main Role] Coming This Thanksgiving
  • John Landis nails it: „one of the problems with Universal’s Dark Universe is that it isn’t respectful of the monsters […] if you’re gonna make a movie of The Mummy, why the fuck do you need Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe?! As soon as you announce that Tom Cruise is in The Mummy, you know you’re not going to see a horror picture! It’s not gonna be The Mummy, it’s going to be the Tom Cruise Show. I don’t know. What no one understands, ideas are a dime a dozen. An idea has no real value. It’s all about the execution of the idea.”

Flatliners

In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.

Snatchers

Tour De Pharmacy

In 1982, during a dark and fictitious time in cycling history, the sport’s most venerable, time-honored race was marred by the doping of virtually all of its competitors. Through the perspective of five riders, Tour de Pharmacy gives an inside look into the grim realities of the darkest event in a sport notoriously tainted by controversy.

Security

An ex-special services veteran (Antonio Banderas), down on his luck and desperate for work, takes a job as a security guard at a run-down mall in a rough area of town. On his first night on the job, he opens the doors up to a distraught and desperate young girl who has escaped and fled from a hijacking of the Police motorcade that was transporting her to testify as a trial witness in a briefcase. Hot on her heels is psychopathic hijacker (Ben Kingsley), alongside his resourceful henchmen, who will stop at nothing to extract and eliminate their witness.

Shot Caller

A newly released prison gangster is forced by the leaders of his gang to orchestrate a major crime with a brutal rival gang on the streets of Southern California.
