Tobias Revell: Critical Design Fiction

 Youtube Direktfiction, via New Aesthetics

David Kirby first coined the term [Design Fiction] in his book Labcoats in Hollywood but Bruce Sterling took it on to design fictions. It means literally 'prototypes from another world.' The idea being that by experiencing object from another world, we can sort of extrapolate in our minds what that world must be like. The object is our 'in' to a different way of thinking.

Children of Men is one of the greatest diegetic design fictions of all time. You can just about to see the pig hovering above Battersea power station. Even the simplicity of that symbol of talking about what kind of world this is is immensely powerful. Films have been doing diegetics much longer than design but design is catching up.

Critical Design / Design Fiction lecture finally written up. (loooooong)
