In an article dated Feb. 8, 1953, a man stood in a pressurized chamber to simulate altitude of 65,000 feet with a beaker of boiling water: “If a man were in that chamber, unprotected, he would first ‘boil,’ then ‘explode,’ ” reported C. B. Palmer. The article went on to demonstrate the Air Force’s efforts to grapple with the biological limitations of humans. “If they didn’t have to fit a man into a cockpit, and make it possible for him to see and move,” wrote Mr. Palmer, “if they didn’t have to provide for oxygen and air conditioning and such auxiliary gimmicks, they could build far more punch into their places.” Photo: Sam Falk/The New York Times
