The day the music industry died
Having waited four years for their heroes to finish another record, Radiohead fans were understandably excited last week to learn that the band’s seventh album, In Rainbows, will finally be released on Wednesday. But what really rocked the fanbase – and heightened the air of gloom enveloping the global record industry – was the news that In Rainbows could be preordered and downloaded perfectly legally for as little as 1p at

How the RIAA tasted victory: a perfect storm which might not be repeated
Last week, a federal jury took less than four hours to find Jammie Thomas, a 30-year-old single mother from Brainerd, MN, liable for willful copyright infringement. When the tab—24 songs at $9,250 each—had been tallied up, Thomas found herself owing the record labels a whopping $222,000. In the aftermath of the case, it's important to look at why the jury came to the decision it did, and why other cases may not play out the same way. There's a great deal of misinformation out there, but since we were on the scene covering the case, we're in a good position to talk about what did and didn't matter when the verdict came down.

Mars Attacks
3 Kinds of Culture Jamming: Commercial, Political and Social Signs of Our Times
As you walk through a city, how often do you stop to think about the signs, symbols and advertisements that bombard your vision from every direction? There seems little doubt that we live in a society increasingly dominated by visual information. However, refection on life is a prerequisite for living, and the cultural, political and commercial symbols of our times are well worth rethinking on a regular basis.

The Best and Worst Logo Remakes of the Century
There are some logo remakes that should be praised, and there are some that should be hazed.
When it comes to re-branding a corporate identity, you would imagine that the CEO would take great care in making such a decision. In some cases, this is not true. In fact, there are many cases where you begin to question the sobriety of those in charge when they decided to remake their brand.

Photoshop-Contest: Art Sequels
A great painting captures a moment in time. But, after the masterpiece is finished, life goes on. Even the most prolific painter couldn't catch every scene as it happened - but now you can.
In this contest, we need you to show us what occurred after the artists completed their artwork. You can show us a few seconds later, when a cow wanders in front of the American Gothic couple, or hours later, when the waiters and busboys are cleaning up the Last Supper table.

Batz: Irgendwann

Youtube: Applause
Applause is primarily the expression of approval by the act of clapping, or striking the palms of the hands together, in order to create noise; generally any expression of approval. Audiences are usually expected to applaud after a performance, such as a musical concert, speech or play. Applause should not be confused to clapping with the rhythm of a song but should have a random, sporadic matter to it.

TIE Fighter Case Mod
23-year-old David Barry of Brooklyn, New York, knew that his first case mod had to be something cool. As a die-hard Star Wars fan, David figured that a TIE Fighter model with a computer living in the cockpit that also served as a desk would do just fine.

Blu-Ray Porn, Mechanized Masturbation and Upskirts at Japan's First Sex Show
As anyone who has taken a stroll through Tokyo's raucous red-light districts will know, Japanese people aren't exactly shy about sex. But like most things in Japan there's a proper time and place, and it's not the businesslike environs of an international exhibition venue.
Or rather that was true. Japan recently had its first-ever adult expo at the Makuhari Messe convention center near Tokyo. In a press release the organizers of the "Adult Treasure Expo" vowed to "draw the adult industry out of the darkness and secrecy which has traditionally surrounded it, to the place of honor and value which it deserves."

A day on the Surface: a hands-on look at Microsoft's new computing platform
It's not often that one gets a chance to attend a demonstration of a new method of human-computer interaction. Having been too young to witness the development of the command line in the 1950s or the modern graphical user interface at Xerox PARC in the 1970s, it was a genuine thrill to visit Microsoft's campus for a personal demo of "surface computing." While future computer historians are unlikely to view this technology as being anywhere near as groundbreaking as the CLI or GUI, the multi-touch interface nonetheless serves as an innovative way of interacting with the personal computer.

The Future is Now (1955)

New York Times: Rape Epidemic Raises Trauma of Congo War
Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynecologist, cannot bear to listen to the stories his patients tell him anymore.
Every day, 10 new women and girls who have been raped show up at his hospital. Many have been so sadistically attacked from the inside out, butchered by bayonets and assaulted with chunks of wood, that their reproductive and digestive systems are beyond repair.
“We don’t know why these rapes are happening, but one thing is clear,” said Dr. Mukwege, who works in South Kivu Province, the epicenter of Congo’s rape epidemic. “They are done to destroy women.”
